The body slumped in the alley was still warm.

Lucien crouched beside it. Gloved hand over the pulse point. Nothing.

Another ex-syndicate courier.

Third one in two days.

All of them had something in common:

They once reported to Rafael.

And now?

Their throats were slit with surgical precision.

Too clean for chaos. Too sharp for chance.

A message.

Solene stepped beside him.

“No blood spray,” she murmured. “Means whoever did it cleaned them after.”

Lucien looked up at her.

> “That boy is ten years old, Solene.”

She met his gaze. Unblinking.

> “So was I. The first time they made me kill something.”

They stood in front of the fireplace.

Not speaking.

Lucien poured whiskey. Poured another. Tossed the second one back.

“You still think he’s worth saving?” he asked.

Solene didn’t answer right away.

Instead, she reached for his belt.

His hand stopped hers.
