Chapter 4

Author: Winter Fog
To prevent Oliver from tampering with the situation, I turned around and went to another hospital for a medical assessment.

After meeting with the lawyer, I went home to pack my things. To my surprise, Jade was also at home.

Usually at this time, she was either working overtime or accompanying Oliver to his favorite restaurant. Now that I had withdrawn, she somehow did not focus on enjoying their alone time together.

"What? Were you afraid that I'd steal something, so you came back to watch me?"

Jade froze, never expecting the usually gentle me to speak so sarcastically. "Damian, you've changed a lot over the past few days."

I walked past her and silently packed my things. On the day of the trial, the law would give me a fair verdict.

Jade let out a long sigh and grabbed me. "Don't do this. Be good."

I had been exercising regularly for years and was strong. I did not want to hurt her and could only watch her carefully as she applied ice packs to my wounds.

It did not matter, as I had already done the injury assessment.

"Does it still hurt?"

The more I ignored her, the gentler she became. "Damian, I had no choice when we were in the hospital today. The influence of public opinion is too great. If I didn't do this, the people at the hospital would also misunderstand Oliver. He's your mentor. You made a mistake, so I have to help you uphold matters in a manner that respects your mentor."

I smiled, but I no longer felt any emotion. "Are you done? I need to get back to packing."

Jade paused, a flash of impatience crossing her delicate made-up face. "Are you still going to make a scene? We've been together for five years; we've met each other's parents and we're about to set a wedding date."

I shook my head, my voice calm. "There won't be a wedding. After all, we'll be busy dealing with court proceedings; where would we find the time?"

Jade froze, the lecture she was about to give me was stuck in her throat. Instinctively, she reached for her phone.

I glanced over; sure enough, it was her chat with Oliver. I remarked kindly, "No need to ask him for advice on how to placate me. I'm not throwing a tantrum this time; I'm serious. Jade, enough with being a trio. You two can finally enjoy life as a couple."

Jade stared at me in astonishment. "You were snooping on my phone? Damian, do you realize that's an invasion of privacy?"

I pursed my lips and smiled. "In that case, feel free to go ahead and sue me. Ms. Swanson."

...

As soon as I stepped out of the residential complex, a crowd of reporters swarmed me with their microphones thrusted at me.

"Mr. Lake, there's a new rumor claiming you're the one who came between Ms. Swanson and Dr. Graham. Please give us an explanation!"

I instinctively stepped back but lost my footing, slamming the lower half of my body hard against the stone steps.

Pain instantly washed over me.

Someone shouted, "Blood! He's bleeding heavily down there!"

In the split second before I lost consciousness, I saw Jade's face pale as a sheet. "Damian!"

After the accident and my admission to the hospital, I sensed something was wrong. Those reporters who had appeared out of nowhere were extremely suspicious, and they completely disappeared without a trace after the incident. As such, I contacted a private detective to help me investigate.Sure enough, these people were all hired by Oliver.During the internal staff physical examination at the hospital, he saw my report first. He already knew I was vulnerable because I had just had a vasectomy. Thus, the damage to my fertility was not an accident at all; it was a deliberate, premeditated act.Melissa listed the pieces of evidence one by one. Oliver's crime was an undeniable fact.In the end, Oliver received the legal punishment he deserved according to the law. The rest of his life was over.Jade sat there, her body shaking uncontrollably. She did not even care that we were in the courtroom. Her eyes were red as she looked at me. "Damian, I'm sorry. I didn't know Oliver did this.

Right before the trial started, Jade also brought my parents along. As soon as they saw me, my parents had a look of disappointment and regret on their faces. "Damian, what's with that attitude? Is it really worth getting into this much of a fight with Jade? You should immediately apologize to Jade and Dr. Graham and consider this matter over!"Originally, I did not tell my parents because I did not want them to worry. However, I never expected Jade to tell my parents.Looking at Jade's complicated expression, I rubbed my temples and calmly explained to my parents, "Dad, Mom, I ended up with permanent damage to my fertility because Jade insisted on taking me to court just to protect Oliver. Now, do you still want me to apologize? "My mother's eyes were a little tearful as she comforted me. "Damian, we all know about this. It was an accident. It's not Jade's fault. I know you're sad, but you were the one who was at fault after all. Besides, Jade is willing to give you children. Wha

As the trial date was approaching, there was still no news from me.Jade slumped into the seat, mechanically refreshing our chat over and over again. "Damian, why are you so stubborn?"After Oliver finished singing, he sat down beside Jade with a smile and handed her the microphone. "Just have fun, okay? Don't worry. Even if Damian doesn't apologize to me, I can handle it."Jade remained silent.Oliver slowly moved and quietly leaned against Jade, but just as he was about to wrap his arms around her, Jade suddenly stood up.Her voice suddenly became very icy. "Oliver, you may be Damian's mentor, but that doesn't give you the right to cross boundaries. Show some respect."Oliver arranged today's event. He had planned to take advantage of this opportunity to win Jade over, so he invited many colleagues to be witnesses. As soon as Jade spoke, the atmosphere in the private room changed instantly. Seven or eight people stared intently at her.Oliver's face turned red, and he looked

While I was receiving treatment in the hospital, Jade came every day, preparing various kinds of nutritious meals for me.I leaned against the headboard, quietly watching Jade bustle around, tending to everything. Suddenly, I recalled Jade behaving the same way when I had an accident during my sophomore year.At that time, a patient in the same ward exclaimed, "Oh, that girl is nice! She's so kind to her boyfriend. She’s wife material for sure! Young man, you've got a lifetime of happiness ahead of you!"I subconsciously looked at the waist wrapped in bandages, squeezing out a smile that looked even sadder than tears. It seemed as if nothing had changed, but things had already changed beyond recognition.Jade's happiness was not meant for me."Jade, you don't need to do this. We have broken up. Why waste your time on this? Why don't you focus on studying the case instead?"Jade paused in her action of peeling an orange. There was a hint of hurt in her eyes. "Damian, you're rese

Jade looked at me, but said nothing more to defend herself. The Ms. Swanson who always had a clear mind and logical thinking, and could talk freely about even the most complicated cases, was left speechless."You... You should rest well..." Jade hurriedly replied and then fled out of the ward.As soon as Jade left, Oliver came in holding fruits and flowers, his eyes awfully red. His voice was heavily sorrowful. "Damian, are you okay? I never expected such a thing to happen. Your..."I raised my eyebrows and sneered. "I thought you would be happy. After all, now that I've completely separated from Jade, you can openly be with her."Due to our different statuses and Jade's constant preaching, I had always regarded Oliver as my teacher. This was the first time I had spoken so straightforwardly.Oliver's cheeks turned red at my words, but he still denied it. "Damian, you’ve really misunderstood me and Jade. She took better care of me for your sake. As your mentor, I would never have

Jade came rushing toward me like a madwoman, screaming at the top of her lungs. However, the sounds gradually faded away.Excruciating pain overwhelmed me as my consciousness faded...When I opened my eyes again, the hospital ceiling was the first thing I saw.Jade kept watch by the bedside; her makeup remained exquisite and alluring, and her elegant curls were styled to perfection. However, her overall state was awful — her eyes were vacant and her expression was one of profound sorrow.Jade had always said that no matter what happened, one had to maintain their composure and demeanor, which were especially crucial for lawyers. This was the first time I had ever seen her like this."You're awake? How are you feeling?" Jade's voice was terribly hoarse."Because I didn't want to have children yet, I had you undergo a vasectomy. Now it's accidentally injured; the doctors say its function hasn't been impaired, but we have to try our luck within the next year if we want children..."
