Chapter Seven: Illegitimate Son

Nathan froze when he opened his phone and saw the photograph on the screen.

Number one trending.

Alex, his son, smiling as if the world was still the same as always, standing right beside Sarah’s child. The resemblance was so brutal it hurt to look at. Almost twins. His stomach dropped. He lifted his eyes to Sarah. She was already staring at her own screen, face pale, lips parted in a failed attempt to say something that never came.

They exchanged no words.

Nathan walked straight to the center of the stage, where the cameras were still live.

ā€œOne moment, please,ā€ he said, voice contained, almost too calm. ā€œThis is clearly some kind of misunderstanding. I’ll handle it personally and clear the story. I ask for space to deal with it. Thank you.ā€

He gave a single nod, turned, and left the podium before the first reporter could open his mouth.

The room began to deflate. Cables being coiled, low murmurs, hurried footsteps toward the exits.

Sarah waited until the place was nearly empty. Only then did she approach. Her hands trembled slightly.

ā€œNathan… I’m sorry. Mrs. Cassy took them to the market for groceries. I should have told her to keep a low profile. No photos. This is on me. I’ll fix it, I promise.ā€

He gave her a brief nod. He didn’t trust himself to speak. She waited one more second, then walked away without pressing.

The moment she disappeared down the hallway, Nathan pulled out his phone again and dialed the head of cybersecurity.

ā€œListen carefully,ā€ he said the instant the call connected. ā€œI don’t care what it costs. Money, favors, connections. Twenty minutes. If those photos aren’t gone from the internet, from backups, from caches, from every damn search result… you’re finished. Tomorrow you’ll be looking for work on another continent. Understood?ā€

He hung up without waiting for an answer.

Emma was still in her car, furious, still shaking with rage at being dragged out of the press room like a criminal. She cursed Sarah aloud, replaying every humiliation in front of the reporters. Then her phone buzzed. Trending alert. She tapped it.

She stopped breathing.

Nathan wasn’t the type who appeared in scandals. Never rumors, never leaks, never a single compromising photo. And now that child—who could pass for Alex’s twin—was everywhere. Her fingers went numb. Her heart slammed against her ribs as if it wanted out.

Who the hell is that kid?

Sarah drove with her gaze lost, windows down, wind whipping her face. She couldn’t stop thinking about Adin. Five years old and already seeing things adults missed. If anyone had followed them at the market, he would have noticed. He would have said something.

Therefore, no one followed them. Which meant he allowed—or arranged—for the photo to be taken.

Nathan Reed? What was he thinking?

She arrived home. Mrs. Cassy was waiting on the porch, guilt carved so deeply into her face she looked ill.

ā€œSarah, I didn’t meanā€”ā€

ā€œI know,ā€ she cut her off. ā€œIt’s not you. It’s Adin. He knew exactly what was happening. If he’d wanted that photo to never see daylight, it would already be gone.ā€

She didn’t wait for more apologies. She went inside and climbed the stairs.

ā€œAdin,ā€ she called.

He stepped out of his room, tablet in hand. Too calm. As if he’d been waiting for her.

ā€œWhy?ā€ she asked. No raised voice. Just exhausted. ā€œDo you even understand what you’ve started? You chose the Reeds. Do you know what that means?ā€

Alex poked his head out from the playroom, eyes already shining.

ā€œMommy, don’t be mad at him. I begged Grandma Cassy to let me go too. And if Adin and Aria don’t have a dad… I’ll give them mine.ā€

Something cracked inside Sarah’s chest. She looked from one to the other.

Adin was already touching the screen.

ā€œI’m sorry, Mom,ā€ he said quietly. ā€œI didn’t want to upset you. I’ll delete it now.ā€

His fingers moved fast. But she knew that look. That wasn’t a real ā€œsorry.ā€ That was him covering tracks.

She’d caught him weeks earlier reading old articles about her. Silently. Asking questions without asking. He didn’t like Emma. He didn’t like how she treated his mom. So he decided to stir the hornet’s nest. Make her uncomfortable.

She watched him work. He wasn’t just deleting tweets or posts. He was making everything vanish.

ā€œDone,ā€ he said at last, looking up. ā€œAll of it. They won’t get it back.ā€

She leaned against the wall, arms crossed tight.

ā€œWhy didn’t you stop it before it blew up? Why did you even let Mrs. Cassy take them outside?ā€

He didn’t answer. Just dropped his gaze to his feet.

Sarah’s mind slid back five years. That night she’d tried to bury it. She woke up alone, head splitting, stomach churning with regret. She never tried to find out who he was. Never wanted to. She had twins, a job, a life. That was enough.

But now Adin standing next to Alex… the same jawline, the same way the hair fell, the same faint scatter of freckles across the nose. It wasn’t just similar. It was identical.

The internet had seen it too. That’s why the photo went viral. People assumed Nathan had a secret family.

Someone knocked on the front door.

Sarah went down slowly, opened it.

Nathan. Still in his suit, face hard.

ā€œI’m here for Alex,ā€ he said, stepping inside without waiting for an invitation. ā€œAnd yes, the photos are disappearing. My teams can’t keep up. Someone is scrubbing faster than anyone I’ve ever hired could. Was it you?ā€

She shook her head.

ā€œI don’t know anything about that, Nathan. I was just upstairs talking to Adin.ā€

He stepped closer. The room seemed to shrink.

ā€œThen who? And why was your son at the market today with mine?ā€

ā€œMrs. Cassy went for groceries,ā€ she answered. ā€œShe took them with her. I didn’t think it was a big deal. Two little boys who look alike. People notice those things. It happens.ā€ She met his eyes directly. ā€œYou left your son here for three days. So don’t act like this is all my fault.ā€

He narrowed his eyes.

ā€œWhere is he?ā€

Alex came down the stairs slowly, socks slipping on each step. He stopped halfway.

ā€œDaddy… Can we stay a little longer? Please.ā€

ā€œNo,ā€ Nathan snapped. Sharp. ā€œWe’re leaving.

You’ve caused enough trouble for one day.ā€

Alex took his father’s hand, glanced back at Sarah one last time. They left. The door closed with a final click.

Sarah stood there a moment. Then went upstairs. She took a long, very hot shower. Didn’t dry off completely. Just dropped onto the bed in the damp robe, staring at the ceiling, listening to the house fall silent.

Across town, Emma sat on her mother’s sofa, an untouched glass of wine between her fingers.

ā€œHow can some random kid look exactly like Alex?ā€ Linda asked carefully.

ā€œMom, stop. It’s probably just a classmate or something.ā€ But the words sounded hollow even to her.

Because how? How could someone with no connection have exactly the same eyes, the same smile, everything identical?

Her heart started pounding hard again.

This isn’t a coincidence… But who could have orchestrated it?

Could that child be…?

Chapter Eleven: The manipulator Emma drove straight to the Reeds family estate, her fingers tight around the steering wheel the entire way. The familiar iron gates came into view and she exhaled slowly, composing herself. She needed to look like a woman in pain, not a woman with a plan.Nathan's mom had always had a soft spot for her. From the moment Emma had placed a grandson in her arms, she had become the old woman's favourite daughter rather than daughter-in-law. It was a card Emma had never hesitated to play. And today she was going to play it well. The housekeeper let her in without question and led her to the sitting room where Mrs. Reeds was having her afternoon tea. Mrs. Reeds looked up the moment Emma walked in, reading her face immediately. That was the thing about older women who had seen a lot they always thought they could read a room. Emma let her think she could."Emma? What's wrong?"Emma sat down across from her, folding her hands in her lap. She let the silence str

Chapter Ten: The plan Two days later, Sarah drove to the Reed Cooperative building for the new project meeting. The moment she stepped inside, one of Nathan’s men was already waiting. He led her straight to the top floor without saying much. She stopped in front of the big office door, took a breath, and knocked softly. Only when she heard ā€œCome inā€ did she push the door open. The office was bright and huge. Nathan sat behind his desk, leaning back lazily in his big chair. A document lay open in front of him, and he was slowly twirling a pen between his long fingers. When the door opened, he lifted his head. A small smile touched his lips.ā€œMs. Irish, please have a seat.ā€Sarah felt uneasy the second she saw his face. It looked too much like his son’s. Maybe it was because of the trouble Alex had caused two days ago.She sat down quickly and went straight to the point. ā€œMr. Nathan, for the first step of this collaboration between my international fashion company and the Reed Cooperat

Chapter Nine: Confusion The flashing lights of the cameras had finally faded away into the night, leaving behind a heavy silence that didn’t bring any comfort at all; instead, it felt like the beginning of something much darker and more complicated than anyone could have imagined.Nathan Reed slipped quietly into the backseat of his black car without saying a single word to anyone, and when the door closed behind him with that soft but final thud, it was as if he had sealed himself off from the entire world, the shouting reporters, the blinding flashes, the endless questions that had been thrown at him like stones all day long.ā€œDrive,ā€ he ordered in a low voice that carried no room for argument. The car pulled away smoothly, gliding through the streets while the voices of the press grew smaller and more distant outside the tinted windows.ā€œMr. Reed, is the boy truly your son?ā€ā€œAre the rumors about an illegitimate child real?ā€ā€œMr. Reed, please just one comment!ā€Nathan’s jaw clench

Chapter Eight: DNA TestNathan was fuming that evening. The car crawled through evening traffic, horns blaring outside, but inside it felt like the air had been sucked out. He kept glancing in the rear-view at Alex, then finally couldn’t hold it anymore.ā€œYou’re not going near that woman or those kids again. That’s it. End of discussion.ā€Alex stayed quiet for a second, just staring back with those big eyes that always got shiny when he was about to cry. He knew his dad didn’t say things he didn’t mean.ā€œDad… I’m sorry. I won’t make any more trouble. Please… just let me keep seeing Mummy.ā€The word Mummy hit Nathan like a punch. He pulled the car over sharp, tyres scraping the curb, switched off the engine and twisted round in his seat. Reached back and caught Alex’s cheek, not rough enough to leave a mark, but firm enough to make the boy freeze.ā€œThat woman is not your mummy. I don’t know her. And I don't want to know her. You say that word one more time and you won’t like what happ

The lobby was packed with reporters even though the conference had not yet started, and the noise level told her everything she needed to know about how much attention this event had drawn. She walked straight into the main hall and took her place, offering a brief apology for being late.Nathan saw her the moment she stepped in and went completely still. She steadied herself, gripped the podium lightly, and spoke into the microphone. "Thank you all for coming.
