Chapter 1

Penulis: Sylvan Mont
The moment I walked into the courtroom, I heard the entire gallery suck in a sharp breath. It was all because I was dressed in torn, filthy clothes, with not a single uninjured patch of skin on my body. Every inch of me was covered in wounds from being abused and humiliated.

Mom and Dad saw the way everyone was pointing at and whispering. Their faces twisted with anger and resentment.

"Didn't we take you to a doctor yesterday to get those injuries treated? And now you're showing up looking like this. Are you trying to make everyone think we're the ones who abused you? You really are vicious to the core, Sonia!"

The words stabbed into me like knives, but inside, I felt nothing at all. I was their biological daughter, yet I had never once measured up to Jean Shore, the fake heiress. After Jean's death, they'd taken every ounce of grief and rage they had and dumped it all on me.

My brother Sebastian Shore's gaze was especially cold when it landed on me. "Sonia, what are you trying to pull now? Playing the victim again? You think we're going to feel sorry for you? You sure didn't think about today when you killed Jean, did you?"

Mom's tears burst forth like a dam breaking when she heard Jean's name. "My darling Jean! Why wasn't it you who died instead of her, Sonia?"

I lowered my head and stared at the wounds on my body, suddenly a little dazed. Would they still look at me with this much hatred if I really were dead? Would Mom ever bawl for me the way she was now?

Probably not.

As for Sebastian… He knew better than anyone where all my injuries came from. After all, during my time being locked up in that lab, he was the only one who came by every day just to watch me being tortured.

Just yesterday, he'd yanked me up by the hair with a cold laugh and told me to go to court exactly as I was now. The more people cursed me, the happier it made him. And now, he'd gotten exactly what he wanted.

I closed my eyes and said calmly, "Don't waste any more time. Let's just get this over with."

I wanted to end this pain as soon as possible and leave them forever.

Right before the judge was about to start the trial, Sebastian suddenly spoke again. "Sonia, remember that you brought all of this on yourself. You're going to accept the verdict, whatever it is."

I grimaced, knowing exactly what he meant. He was afraid I'd be like before—refusing to admit to any of the charges. He was even more afraid I'd resist when I heard that I'd be sentenced to death.

But he had no idea I'd stopped wanting to live a long time ago.

I was dragged to the defendant's stand. Because I hadn't eaten in so long, my legs were so weak I could barely stand. I had to cling to the rail in front of me, my ruined knees half-collapsing toward the floor.

Not a single person in that courtroom felt any sympathy for me. To them, I was nothing more than a murderer.

Only Sebastian's gaze was dark, conflicted, and hard to read. After struggling with himself for a long while, he finally told someone to bring over a chair for me to sit on.

Jean continued cruelly, "Sonia's dead now. You, as her parents, drove your own daughter to her death. And you, as her brother, killed your own sister! None of us is better than the other. We're all murderers! What can you do to me?"Mom, unable to take it anymore, screamed hysterically. Then, she lunged forward, her hands clamping around Jean's throat. "Die! Just die! Give me back my daughter, you bitch!"Jean laughed triumphantly. "If I'd known Sonia was dead, I would've set off fireworks for three whole days to celebrate!"But she didn't get to gloat for long. Police officers rushed in and surrounded her.Her smile froze on her face, and she stared wide-eyed at the Shores. When she spoke, her tone was filled with astonishment and rage. "You seriously called the cops on me? You're really having me arrested? I'm the daughter you raised for over 20 years!"Sebastian stood behind the officers, looking at her with icy indifference. "But we care more about Sonia, the one who actually

The vicious, venomous look on Jean's face made the three members of the Shore family jolt in shock. After a long silence, Mom shut her eyes and said, "Take off her blindfold."Jean's body instantly went rigid. "…Mom?"When her blindfold was removed, she instinctively squinted before everything around her came into focus."Dad, Sebastian, you guys are here, too?" She feigned innocence as she looked down at the ropes binding her and stuck out her tongue. "You guys found out I faked my death? Come on, I was just messing with you. It's all because you guys gave a slice of my birthday cake to Sonia."Anyway, I know I overreacted. Can you let me go now? It's been so long since we last saw each other, and I really missed you guys. Come give me a hug!"She acted spoiled and unbothered, completely certain that the others would keep indulging her every whim. But this time, all three members of the Shore family just stared at her quietly. No one gave the other permission to loosen her ropes

In the end, my adoptive parents still took my body with them. They threatened to sue the Shores for abuse if they didn't agree. The wounds on my body were the best evidence. The Shores were more or less a prestigious family. Naturally, they didn't want a scandal like that ruining their reputation in high society. They had no choice but to give in.When my body was taken away, Sebastian's eyes were bloodshot. He stared blankly at the car carrying me off and whispered, "Sonia, see you in the next life."But I didn't want to see them again in my next life. For some reason, my soul still couldn't leave the Shore residence. I drifted there, day after day, hovering around my parents and Sebastian as I watched them fall apart a little more with every passing day.Once Dad's business partners heard what had happened to me, they unanimously decided to cancel their cooperation with him. Meanwhile, Mom spent her days clutching the only photo of me that remained, tears streaming down her face

Before my real identity was exposed and I was reunited with the Shore family, I'd actually spent 20 whole years being cherished by my adoptive family. My adoptive parents had treated me as their one and only princess and had given me almost everything I'd asked for. When Sebastian had come to pick me up, they'd been heartbroken to see me go. But because of the blood ties I had with the Shores, they'd still decided to let me return to my biological family. They'd thought my birth parents would love me just as much as they had, that they'd spoil me like a princess, too.In reality, on my first day back, Mom had slapped me across the face because Jean had lied and said I'd broken her pearl necklace.Back then, facing the disappointment and anger in Mom's eyes, I'd completely panicked. All I could do was stammer, "I-I didn't…"But Mom hadn't believed me. She'd stood protectively in front of Jean, who'd been wiping away tears, and stared at me warily. "Don't think I'll favor you just b

I was dead. After checking my breathing over and over, Sebastian's mind went completely blank. He and our parents had just driven me, their own kin, to my death. Realizing this, his mouth opened and closed soundlessly, his throat squeezing out a hoarse, broken rasp. One of the staff members quickly reached over to feel for a heartbeat at my chest, and their expression changed. "Call an ambulance, now! The defendant might be in shock!"But I wasn't in shock. My body was cooling rapidly, so cold that the tremor in Sebastian's shoulders wouldn't stop.In the chaos, Mom and Dad finally snapped out of it. They stumbled over, grabbed Sebastian by the collar, and roared at him."Why aren't you doing anything? Aren't you a doctor? Start CPR! Do something!"The fog in Sebastian's head cleared in an instant. He got to his knees and began chest compressions on me.One minute… Two minutes…Even when he'd exhausted his strength, I showed no sign of waking up. I really was dead. The thin sl

The agony was so intense that it felt like every nerve in my body was on fire. I was probably about to die. And it was at that moment that I finally remembered who it was that tied me up in that abandoned building that day.The footage on the screen grew clearer and clearer. On the monitor, Jean was dressed in an exquisite, luxurious dress. In contrast, I was a filthy mess from head to toe, covered in dust and grime. She held an electric baton and gave me a vicious smile. "Repeat after me. 'I killed Jean Shore.'"I lay there deathly pale, drool and snot running uncontrollably down my face as I stammered out the words. "I… killed Jean Shore.""Keep going. Say, 'I was jealous of Jean and wanted her to die miserably.'"I was barely conscious as I repeated the words, only for her to slap me hard across the face. She spat, "That's right. Just like that. When Mom, Dad, and Sebastian ask you later, that's exactly what you're going to say."I don't believe for a second that they'll still
