Chapter 213

Author: Lightmoon
For some reason, Marisol's thoughts drifted to Orion's mother—Nolan's sister—the woman who had murdered her husband and spent six years in prison.

When she'd discussed this with Alinta, she had firmly declared she would never do something so reckless. It simply wasn't worth it to ruin a perfectly good life over a man.

And yet, here she was. Not long after that conversation, she'd smashed her own husband's head in, leaving him hospitalized in critical condition.

What a cruel, ridiculous twist of fate.

Still, Marisol couldn't bring herself to feel guilty. If Lucian hadn't pushed her to the edge, she never would've resorted to violence. All she had wanted was a peaceful divorce.

She was still young. She didn't want to go to prison, and she certainly didn't want a death on her conscience. That kind of burden was far too much to bear.

The weight of those thoughts robbed her appetite, no matter how delicious the breakfast before her was.

Across the table, Nick's gaze remained

"What?"Marisol couldn't understand what was going on in Lucian's head. She turned to leave with the wine glasses in her hand, but suddenly, someone grabbed the glasses from her. She wasn't holding anything anymore. Her hands were empty before she could even snap back to her senses.Marisol got anxious. She glared at Lucian, who was now dabbing lightly at his wet lips as he challenged her with his expression and what looked like a hint of anger in his eyes. His eyes were dark, and Marisol just couldn't figure a thing out from them."You'd better make sure that you're doubly and triply sure of this.""You're out of your mind!"Marisol was so mad she nearly burst a vein. She quickly shoved him aside and headed toward the dance floor. However, her hands wouldn't stop shaking. Nothing was going to happen… right?Little did she know that she wouldn't even have time to think about the consequences later on.…The spotlights on the dance floor gradually turned off. Suddenly, the st

The lighting was dim, and everything fell quiet.Even Nick was completely taken aback by Marisol's question. He froze in place and stared at her for the longest time ever, as if he couldn't believe what she just said. Finally, his mouth moved a little. "W-What did you just say?"Marisol repeated her question. Her face was as red as a tomato. She felt ashamed and guilty as she explained everything, albeit with much complication, about her situation at home now.She then hung her head awkwardly. If she had a choice, she would rather hide her past for the rest of her life. But now, at this point, she knew that she was going to have to explain herself clearly if she wanted Nick to help her."I know that you're thinking."I know my family is a mess. I know there's going to be a lot of complications, but I really don't know what to do anymore. I'll try my best not to drag you in any further after we get married. I promise I'll be good to you. "It's just that I really need the marria

At first, Marisol couldn't understand why Morris and Harper didn't love her. But since there was nothing she could do, she endured. Again and again. It wasn't until her final year of high school, when they tried to sell her to an old man for money, that she finally broke. She climbed over the wall and ran. Four years passed, and yet the nightmare returned. Her parents had always despised her, and whatever affection she might have once harbored for them had long since withered. She could face them now with cold detachment. But standing before her now was the very person who had been the reason she had suffered so much. Marisol found that she couldn't stay composed. When they were young, she had truly cared for Nathan. And he had adored her as a sister. When Nathan was bullied at school, he would cry for her help. He used to sneak her scraps of meat, tuck candies into her palm, and share his pocket money with her. In the end, he had even helped her escape. But as she grew old

"Marisol, we've found a few candidates for you, and they're all from wealthy families. You'll be living in comfort," Harper said as she slid several photos across the table. Marisol barely glanced at them. The youngest man in the stack looked to be in his 30s, with greasy skin and a thick gold chain around his neck. It was the very image of a tasteless nouveau riche. "Comfort?" she scoffed. "Or is it your comfort you're after? How much did they offer you to sell me this eagerly?" There wasn't even rage anymore. Marisol was bitterly amused at their naked greed in marrying her off like a business transaction. "You ungrateful brat! Is that how you speak to your parents?" Damon barked. Marisol flicked a cold glance his way. The bloodied shard in her hand was tilting slightly. Damon shut up instantly. Harper, however, jabbed a finger at Marisol. Her face was flushed with fury. "You're dropping out of university today and coming home with us. This city's turned you wild and heart

A stifling tension choked the air. Harper Foster, shaken by the confrontation, shrank back and fell into silence. Still, she couldn't stop crying. Marisol said nothing. She raised her head and forced a brittle smile as she tried to maintain composure. Under the weight of dozens of stares, she pulled Harper up and began leading her off campus. She couldn't let this spectacle continue on university grounds. …Once outside, Marisol realized it wasn't just Harper who had shown up. Her father, Morris Speight, had come too, along with her uncle, Damon Foster. Their presence reeked of particular intentions. Ignoring Harper's insistence that they return to their hotel, Marisol booked a private room at a nearby restaurant and brought them there instead. She and Harper arrived first. The moment they stepped inside, Harper grabbed her hand and began to cry again. "Look at you. All these years without a word! I thought something terrible had happened to you. I cried myself to sleep

In late winter, inside Everton University's research institute, the office buzzed with a mix of cheers and groans. The team had just completed the first major phase of their project, and now everyone was eagerly debating where to go for the celebratory dinner. But in a quiet corner, Marisol and the project lead had already slipped away. "Is it okay to leave without saying anything?" Marisol asked, feeling slightly guilty about sneaking off. "It's fine," Nick replied with a soft smile. He reached up to straighten the fluffy white beanie on her head, which sat crooked from her haste. "Keep that on properly. Don't catch a cold. I've already sent the team their bonuses. As the lead, my job is to fund the fun. Besides, I made you a promise that once we wrapped up this phase, I'd make you potato pancakes. Have you changed your mind?" Marisol's eyes lit up. She'd loved potato pancakes as a child, though they were a rare treat. After running away from home, she hadn't tasted them s
