Chapter 33

Author: Lightmoon
At the Apex Union Bank's tech department, someone said to Marisol, "Ms. Speight, do you really have to leave? It's so hard to find a boss as good as you."

"Yeah, Ms. Speight! This is too sudden!"

"Can't you stay?"

Marisol had just finished a meeting when several of her closer team members gathered around. They were all talking over each other about her resignation.

Though she was serious and strict at work, she had a decent temperament. When she did get stern, it was always work-related and professional. She often gave out personal bonuses during and after projects, treated her team to meals and drinks, and applied for rewards like prizes and trips for them.

As long as the work was done well, she was flexible with time-off requests, making the office environment relatively relaxed. Combined with her high technical skills, her team members respected her deeply. It was no surprise that they were reluctant to let her go now that she was leaving.

The monastery was surrounded by mountains. Built into a natural depression in the slope, it was surrounded by layers of red buildings with golden roofs, which rose upward. They were tiered and majestic.Walking up the slope, many red-robed devotees hurried past Marisol, and the sound of chanting echoed continuously through the narrow streets. As she passed the buildings, she occasionally caught the ethereal scent of smoldering herbs.Looking up, she saw several vultures spreading their massive wings. Their calls were piercing and powerful as they soared across the sky toward a mountaintop. It felt like standing between a sacred realm and the mortal world.Marisol paused midway up the hill, watching the vultures vanish into the horizon. Just as she was about to keep climbing, a deep, warm voice called out from behind her. It was so steady and gentle that it seemed to reach into her soul."Young lady, do you know where the vultures are flying to?"Marisol froze. Turning around, she

Everything was too difficult to put into words. While Marisol struggled with what to say, her phone vibrated, and she quickly pulled it out to see Alinta's call. After gesturing to Nick, she answered the phone.Alinta immediately reported, "Mari, I found out about what you asked me to investigate. Nevaeh and Lucian don't really have an engagement. "It was something their families casually mentioned when they were kids, like a play-date promise; nothing was ever official. There was no engagement party, no real confirmation of a relationship."She added, "But I'm not entirely sure, you know? After all, these two did go abroad to study together, so I guess things will probably be settled by the time they come back."No formal engagement party, and no confirmed relationship. Marisol's emotions churned as a huge weight suddenly lifted from her chest. If that was the case, then she hadn't actually interfered in someone else's relationship. Besides, she'd been forced and deceived

The rain fell softly, and maple leaves scattered around them. Under the white umbrella, Marisol looked up slightly, and the man's handsome face gradually blurred in her vision. Yet somehow, she had never seen him more clearly than now.Tears rolled down her cheeks. She opened her mouth. She wanted to say so many things, but it all came out as a sob. Complex emotions swirled inside her heart, and the ache was unbearable. After a long while, Marisol managed to utter only one sentence. It was as if it had drained all her strength. She said, "I'm in so much pain."That was the most honest thing she could say at this moment. Facing someone who had once seen her at her lowest, she had no defenses left. Nick instantly became teary-eyed. He couldn't hold back his emotions anymore and crouched down, gently pulling the rain-drenched, shivering girl into his arms. He held her close as he softly patted her back in silent comfort. The two embraced in the rain, and neither spoke. Yet, Marisol

Marisol thought the nickname 'Sol' sounded so familiar. In a daze, she asked, "What did you call me?" "Sol, you still don't remember me after all this time?" Nick replied with a soft sigh. His gentle features were shadowed by something bittersweet.Hearing that nickname again, Marisol stared at him, stunned. For the first time, she truly studied his face. Gradually, the refined man in front of her began to overlap with a boy she hadn't seen in years. It went back to the summer when she was 12. Her parents were neglectful, and she was often left hungry. At school, her classmates were all raising butterflies from caterpillars. However, good willow leaves were hard to come by. So, she frequently went to an abandoned factory near her house to climb trees and pick willow leaves. Then, she would trade the clean willow leaves with her classmates for a little pocket money or a bite or two of snacks, which helped fill her stomach a bit and satisfy her cravings. There was an old willo

Snow was falling steadily, and a black SUV was parked on the edge of a winding mountain road.Zachary sat slumped in the passenger seat, breathing shallowly. His head was spinning, and he pushed away the portable oxygen canister Marisol was holding out."J-Just give me a second... I'll adjust."Marisol wrapped her windbreaker tighter around herself and glanced at the altimeter with resignation. "We're at about 13,500 feet now. You've endured this far. Stop pushing yourself."Zachary insisted on toughing it out. Marisol decided not to waste time arguing and simply pressed the oxygen mask to his face, making him take a breath. After just one inhale, he fell silent.Marisol asked calmly, "Still dizzy?""No." Zachary caught his breath, grumbling in frustration. "I don't get it. I'm so healthy, and you're the delicate one, so why aren't you getting altitude sickness while I am?" "Maybe you're too healthy for your own good?"Zachary was left speechless. "Alright, just rest up. My

The woman's voice instantly turned cold. "It's you? Marisol, right? You seriously have the nerve to call? Lucian's in the shower and doesn't have time for trash like you. Don't ever call again, you fiance-stealing homewrecker!""Wait... I really didn't know he had—" Marisol tried to explain, but the person had already ended the call. She stood frozen on the busy sidewalk at dusk. Her ears were ringing from the shock.A homewrecker? She had never imagined that one day, someone would call her that. The crushing sense of helplessness and ridiculousness instantly overwhelmed her. She couldn't make sense of it, and for a moment, she even lost the courage to confront the truth. Marisol stood dazed on the street for a long time. Eventually, she gathered her strength and called Alinta about Lucian's engagement. Alinta was the only person she knew who was remotely close to that world. Even though the Gardner family was also wealthy, they weren't in the same league as the Muller family
