Chapter 3

Autor: Iced Chocolate
Rachel and I began dating while we were both in college. After graduating, I gave up everything at home and moved to her hometown so that I could keep her company.

When we first started dating, Rachel had been very dutiful and treated me really well. She would do all the basic chores at home, making sure the place was clean and the meals were on the table. She was also very gentle with me.

However, as time passed, things began to change.

She got colder and colder toward me and even said that we no longer had to bother with romantic gestures because we were basically family anyway.

Now that I thought of it, I realized that she had simply just given all of her love to someone else instead, and whatever she had left for me was just perfunctory.

"Is that true, Rachel? Is everything Max just said true?"

I felt chills down my spine. All of the questions I had for her and the urges I had to interrogate her suddenly died down at that moment.

Rachel lowered her head and said hesitantly, "Yeah."

I felt my heart sink into my stomach. "Alright. I understand."

Then, I turned to Titus and said, "Titus, let's go."

Since things had already turned out like this, the only thing left that I could do for myself was to preserve what little dignity I had left.

However, Rachel abandoned Max and ran out after me before grabbing me by my arm. She said urgently, "Aaron, I have my difficulties too. Don't get mad at me. I promise I'll explain everything to you after the wedding."

"What's there to explain anymore?" Titus exclaimed, pushing her off and pulling me away instead.

He wouldn't stop cussing her out as we made our way back.

I knew that he was just saying that to comfort me, but I just didn't want to listen to anything anymore for now.

I drove him back to his apartment building and interrupted him mid-curse. I was calm as I said, "Go back home first, Titus. I'll come looking for you after I've packed up my things."

"You sure you don't need me around?" he asked, looking at me with concern.

I smiled at him so he wouldn't worry about me. "I'll be fine. Don't worry."

I knew how to end things on a good note. I could give in gracefully if needed.

Also, since now our fake divorce was actually real, there were some things that I wasn't going to let go. I was going to take back everything that belonged to me.

For example, the house we were living in now had been fully paid for in cash by me before getting married. So, even during the divorce, it would be considered my own private property and not a joint one.

I decided to sell the house and bring the money home for my parents instead.

The day I took the property agent on a tour of the house, though, Rachel suddenly came back without warning.

When she saw another woman in the house, she began interrogating me without even asking me who she was.

"Aaron Matthews! Our divorce was fake! How could you bring home another woman almost immediately?"

I couldn't be bothered to answer her and just told the property agent that we should perhaps postpone the viewing to another day instead. Then, I politely saw her out of the door.

Still, Rachel refused to let up and stopped the agent from leaving.

"You're explaining this to me right now! Or else, nobody is allowed to leave this house!"

Last time, when I was still in love with her, everything she did was good in my eyes. I even thought that her weaknesses were nothing but cute little quirks.

But now, things had changed. With the filter turned off in my brain, I realized that Rachel was actually a very annoying person after all.

"We're already divorced. You have no right to interfere in my affairs anymore," I said, pushing her aside before apologizing to the agent again and sending her off.

When I got back, Rachel was still standing in the hallway, looking furiously at me like she was demanding answers from me.

"Aaron Matthews! We agreed that it was only going to be a fake divorce!"

I looked at her like she was an idiot. "Have you forgotten that you've already married someone else?"

"I have my difficulties. Also, my marriage to Max was also fake! And the child was an accident! I really didn't know how things turned out like this!

"I don't know how Mom learned about his existence, and she told me that she was dying soon, and she wanted to see her grandson in her last days."

Rachel kept trying to explain to me in frustration, sounding like she was the righteous one all along and even blaming me for not being understanding enough.

However, all of her excuses mean nothing to me anymore. I didn't want to continue listening to her anymore either.

In addition to that, Shirley clearly looked as fit as a fiddle during the wedding. She certainly didn't look like she was anywhere near knocking on death's door.

"Rachel Brady, since our fake divorce is now real, that means we need to settle our assets and properties properly. I've already hired a lawyer for that.

"As for this house, since I was the one who paid for it, I'm planning to sell it off. Don't come back here anymore."

Surprisingly, Titus wasn't asking me the questions on my parents' behalf. He frowned and spoke hesitantly, "Just tell me if you still have feelings for her!"I shook my head. "I don't anymore. I stopped ever since she married someone else."Titus sighed in relief and patted himself on the chest."That's good to hear. Then, I guess I don't mind telling you about it anymore."I was really curious now about what he was being so mysterious about. I urged him to spill the beans, and then, he suddenly delivered shocking news to me."Rachel's dead.""What? Why?""Stomach cancer," Titus replied. "I heard that she was already sick when she attended my wedding back then. She'd secretly escaped from her hospital room for a few hours and then checked herself back in after the wedding to continue with her treatment."She finally succumbed on the night of your birthday and passed on."As it turned out, the last phone call she made was also the very last phone call she'd ever made.I felt

As for Rachel, she came looking for me once after being released from the station. At that time, I had already started up my own business and was as busy as a bee, so I barely had any time to talk to her.I heard from my employees that she waited for me for the whole day outside my office building before leaving without a backward glance. After that, she never came looking for me again. My new company was very successful, and business kept increasing every day, keeping me on my toes.Time passed quickly, and soon, it was the day of Titus' wedding.I wore the best man suit that he personally picked out for me and headed straight for the venue early in the morning. When Titus saw me, he came over to me at once."Hey, Aaron! What's in the water you've been drinking? Why do you look so much more handsome now than ever before?"I rolled my eyes and said, "Stop pulling my leg. Everyone's waiting for you."Titus grinned. "That divorce did you good. It's given you a whole new life!"I

"Officer, Rachel Brady has been relentlessly harassing me and causing serious disruption to my life. And then, her husband, Max Cohen, broke into my house without cause and verbally abused an elderly woman, eventually leading to her death," I said."This is a case for the police to handle, isn't it?"The officer on the other end of the line was a little shocked by how listless I sounded on the phone. He immediately replied righteously, "Of course, sir!"And so, Rachel and Max were "invited" to the police station to assist with the officers' investigations. When Shirley learned about it, she immediately hailed a cab straight to the police station. The first thing she did when she stepped into the station was to raise her hand in the air to slap me.Yet, after being abused by her like that for years, I was ready to defend myself. As soon as she raised her hand, I immediately caught it and shoved her out of the way at once."You bastard, Aaron Matthews! How dare you hit me? I am old

"Don't you find it really ironic, Rachel Grady?" I asked. "We're already divorced, and you already have a family of your own."Kindly know where you stand and stop bothering me!"I chased her off afterward, and she told me in a hurt voice, "You will always be my husband to me, Aaron Matthews, and that will never change."I had been busy taking care of Mom ever since coming home, and I also didn't have the heart to break the news about my divorce to Grandma because of her failing health. That was how Rachel had taken advantage of that loophole.Back then, Dad had opposed my marriage with Rachel, and I was the one who begged Grandma to talk to Dad on my behalf and convince him to let me marry her. If she found out that Rachel and I were now divorced, I was worried that she would begin blaming herself for our misfortune.I simply didn't dare to tell Grandma the truth. However, little did I think that Rachel's constant visits and showing up at my house would also lead Max to find us.

Rachel then shook her head in exasperation and began yelling at Shirley, "Can't you stop making a fuss? I never paid a single cent for this house! Aaron was the one who bought it himself!"Yet, Shirley still continued arguing unreasonably. Finally, I had no other choice and brought up the matter of her faking her illness to commit insurance fraud, threatening to call the police on her. It was only then that Shirley finally backed down before being dragged away by Rachel.I watched how Rachel and Shirley interacted regularly and finally understood why my relationship with Shirley kept deteriorating despite having Rachel as the middle person. After they finally left, I also saw Robert out of the door, and soon, it was only Dad and I left in the house. His eyes were rimmed red as he reached out and patted me on the shoulder."You little rascal. How could you not have told us about your divorce? If Titus had never called us, your mom and I would still have been left in the dark!"Wha

"What? How dare you sell my daughter's house? Who gave you the guts to do that? On what basis?" Shirley screamed in my face."On the basis that only Aaron's name is on the property title of this house!" a loud, booming voice suddenly sounded behind us. I looked up and immediately caught sight of a familiar silhouette."Dad!" I exclaimed, happy. I never expected him to be paying me a sudden visit since our hometown was so far away. "What are you doing here, Dad?"Dad scoffed. "If I weren't here, then I bet my son would have been completely taken advantage of by now!"Back then, I went against Dad's advice and insisted on marrying Rachel and moving to her hometown instead. In a fit of rage, Dad broke off all contact with me, and I could never manage to talk to him anymore after that. But now, I figured that he had probably found out about my divorce.Rachel knew who Dad was, and she instinctively greeted him as such. "Hi, Dad."Shirley immediately glared resentfully at Rachel. M
