The silence in the car was thicker than the fog outside.

Anais sat in the backseat, her spine stiff, hands clenched in her lap as the Range Rover cut through the cold night. Cassian was driving. Maris had finally drifted into a fragile sleep beside her, her face pale and drawn, her breath shallow. The engine hummed, but there was no music. No conversation. Just tension. Just silence.

Cassian hadn’t looked at her once.

She didn’t blame him.

He’d watched her unravel back at the safehouse, eyes rimmed in fury and disbelief as she’d said those words—“Let me go, Cassian. I’m not yours.”

Now she wanted to reach forward, grab his shoulder, and take it all back. But pride was a thing, wasn’t it? Even in the face of fear. Even after everything she’d seen in the ruins—those symbols glowing on the stone, that pulse of something not entirely human beneath their feet—she couldn’t seem to bridge the growing space between them.

“Turn left,” Anais said, her voice barely audible.

Cassian didn’t respon

The black vans didn’t idle.Doors burst open before any of them could move. Two men in black tactical gear rushed Cassian first, pinning him to the hood of the car. His head hit the metal with a dull thud. Anaïs turned, arms out, instinctively shielding Maris even as the child clung to her waist like she was glued there.Julien barely moved. He just raised his hands. Calm. Composed. Watching.“Don’t touch her!” Anaïs screamed as one of the men reached for Maris. They ignored her.Another pair of hands—gloved, firm—grabbed her shoulders. She twisted, elbowed back, and caught one of them in the jaw. He grunted, but didn’t let go. The other one struck her across the ribs. Not hard. Just enough to knock the wind out of her.“Keep the girl calm,” one of the men said to the other.Anaïs was still gasping when she saw Cassian struggle to his feet, his lip split, his arms held behind his back by zip-ties. His eyes locked with hers. Not panic. Not rage.Resolve.She didn’t shout his name. She

They were in the car. Silent. Heavy. The city passed them by like a ghost—buildings and people and chaos outside, but none of it touching them. Cassian sat with his hands clenched tight in his lap. Anaïs kept her eyes forward, unreadable, her reflection in the window looking like someone else entirely. No one had said a word since they left the hospital.Folu was still alive. But barely. The surgeon’s tone was clipped when he told them that. “Critical. We’re doing everything we can.” That was three hours ago. Now, he was somewhere between this world and the next, and all Anaïs could think about was the message that led to this.“If you don’t return what you stole, someone you love will bleed for it.”They meant it. And they didn’t just want to hurt her. They wanted to destroy her from the inside.Julien had gone quiet too, which made her uneasy. He wasn’t one to fade into the background. He always had something to say. Some clever dig, some brutal truth wrapped in velvet. But now? Not

Cassian didn’t sleep. He stood by the window of the hotel room as Lagos blinked under the weight of midnight. His hands rested on the windowsill, head bowed. The city lights stretched for miles, but he couldn’t see any of it. All he saw was the look on Anaïs’s face when she read the message. That bloodless, steel-walled look she only wore when she was close to breaking. He hadn’t spoken since.Anaïs was curled up on the armchair across the room, legs pulled to her chest, eyes open and unblinking. Her phone was still on the table, screen black now. But the words were seared into both their minds:“If you don’t return what you stole, someone you love will bleed for it.”And then the news. Folu Alade — attacked. Hospitalized. Barely holding on.She didn’t cry. That was what scared him the most.“You should sleep,” he said quietly. She didn’t even blink.Cassian turned around and crossed the room. He crouched in front of her, searching her face.“I know what you’re thinking,” he said. “Bu

Anaïs stood in the hallway, motionless. The news report on the TV behind her kept playing on loop, but she didn’t turn to look at it again. She couldn’t. The words were already burned into her head — “Folu Alade, political analyst and civil rights activist, is in critical condition after a violent assault…”Her phone slipped from her hand, clattering to the floor. She barely heard it. What echoed in her mind was the message — If you don’t return what you stole, someone you love will bleed for it.Folu had bled for it.The air felt thin in her lungs. Cassian had stepped in behind her at some point, quiet but alert, his jaw tight and his body still. He didn’t speak. He didn’t need to. The way she was standing — rigid, too still — told him everything.Anaïs finally moved. She turned away from the TV and walked past him without a word. Straight into the bedroom. She opened the wardrobe and reached for the box at the top. Her fingers trembled, but she forced them to work.Cassian followed

She couldn’t hear the anchor’s voice anymore. Just the sharp ringing in her ears, like a fire alarm that wouldn’t shut off.Anaïs blinked once.Twice.The words were still there, in that bold crawl at the bottom of the screen:BREAKING: FOLU ALADE ATTACKED. CONDITION UNKNOWN.Her knees went out.Cassian caught her just before she hit the marble, gripping her shoulders hard like he was anchoring her to reality. But his voice—his voice was shaking.“What is it?” he asked. “Anaïs, what—”She turned the screen to him.His eyes widened. And for one terrifying second, even Cassian—the man who never cracked—looked afraid.“No,” Anaïs said. “No. No, no, no—”She broke free from him, snatching her phone, bolting into the hallway like a woman possessed. She didn’t care that her shoes slapped the marble. Didn’t care that her dress was falling off one shoulder. She just needed to see. She needed proof. She needed to know this wasn’t real. She called Folu. It rang once.Twice.Three times. No answ

The message glared back at her, black letters sharp on a white screen, burning like acid through her chest. If you don’t return what you stole, someone you love will bleed for it.Anaïs didn’t move. Couldn’t. Her hand stayed frozen mid-air, phone trembling in her grip as her eyes stayed locked on that sentence. The room around her went still — Cassian’s footsteps had stopped behind her. He was watching her, waiting, and she knew he’d seen the change in her face. The flicker of something icy and sick washing over her.“Who was that?” Cassian asked quietly. She locked the phone and turned it face down on the table.“No one,” she lied.“Anaïs.”She stood. “It’s nothing.”But it wasn’t. And they both knew it.The walls of the apartment suddenly felt too close. The sound of her own heartbeat crowded her ears. She could feel her breath trying to escape faster than she could keep it in.Cassian took a step forward. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”“No. I’m fine,” she said too quickly. “I
