Emilia opened her eyes to unfamiliar surroundings.

Soft white sheets. A massive bed. Floor-to-ceiling windows showing a view of the city skyline. The morning sun was streaming in, making her head pound even harder.

Where was she?

Then it all came rushing back. The betrayal, the bar, and the stranger she had spent the night with.

She sat up quickly, too quickly that her head spun, and she had to grab the headboard to steady herself. The space next to her was empty, but the sheets were rumpled. Someone had been there.

A note sat on the pillow.

The room is paid for until noon. There's aspirin in the bathroom.

That was it. No phone number. No last name. Nothing.

Emilia crumpled the note in her hand. Good. This was what she wanted. One night with no strings attached. That was the deal.

She climbed out of bed and walked to the bathroom. Her reflection in the mirror made her flinch. Mascara was smeared under her eyes. Her hair was a tangled mess. Her lips were swollen.

But it was her eyes that scared her the most. They looked… empty.

“You are not going to fall apart,” she told herself reassuringly. “You are going to get cleaned up and walk out of here with your head held high and take back everything that was stolen from you.”

She took a long shower. The hot water helped clear her head. By the time she stepped out, she felt almost human again.

She put on her red dress from last night. The dress she had worn to welcome her husband back home. It felt wrong now. Like wearing a costume from a play she no longer wanted to be in.

She left the hotel room without looking back.

The lobby was fancy and full of people in business suits. Emilia kept her eyes straight ahead as she walked toward the exit. No one paid her any attention. To them, she was just another guest checking out.

Outside, the cold morning air hit her face as she walked to her car parked across the road. The only thing she literally owned now.

But she had one thing that couldn't be taken away: her brain.

Emilia had graduated at the top of her class in business school. She had spent two years learning how to run her parents' company before Jason came along and made her believe she didn't need to work. She had skills. She had knowledge and she was going to put it to good use.

She drove straight to a dealership store and sold her vehicle for enough money to rent a small apartment in a not-so-nice part of the city.

The apartment had one small room, a bathroom with a leaky faucet, and a kitchen the size of a closet, but she was grateful she had a place to retire to.

After cleaning the room, Emilia waved down a taxi as she headed straight to the house that was once hers.

“Oh look,” Mirabel said, leaning against the doorframe. “The beggar has returned.”

“I'm here for my belongings,” Emilia said, keeping her voice steady.

Mirabel's smile widened. “You mean these things?”

She stepped aside to reveal the living room. Emilia's favorite pictures of her parents were ripped to pieces on the floor, and her other belongings were tossed carelessly around.

Emilia's heart shattered into a thousand pieces as she saw the mess. Her eyes were bloody red, and her voice was ice cold as she spoke.

“You will regret this, Mirabel. I promise you that,” she said, gathering the torn picture.

Mirabel laughed. “And what are you going to do? You have nothing. You are nothing but our stepping stone.”

Emilia didn't respond as she fought back her tears, gathering her belongings.

Over the next few days, she spent hours at the public library, using their computers to update her résumé and apply for positions.

Her typing was fast, and her skills were strong. Despite everything Jason had stolen from her, he couldn't take away her knowledge.

Three days later, she got a call.

“Miss Anderson? This is the HR department at Cross Industries. We were very impressed with your résumé. Can you come in for an interview tomorrow morning?”

Cross Industries. Emilia had heard of them. They were one of the biggest companies in the country. If she could get a job there, she would have a real chance at rebuilding her life.

“Yes,” she said. “I'll be there,” she responded, a smile appearing on her face.

Emilia spent that night preparing. She practiced answers to interview questions. She researched the company's history, its projects, and its leadership.

The next morning, she arrived at Cross Industries headquarters at exactly 8:45 AM, fifteen minutes before her scheduled interview. The building was massive, all glass and steel, reaching up toward the clouds.

“Miss Chen,” the HR manager said after the interview, “we would like to offer you a position as an executive assistant. You would be working directly with our company's CEO. The pay is excellent, and there is plenty of room for advancement. Are you interested?”

Executive assistant to the CEO. This was even better than she had hoped.

“Yes,” Emilia said. “Absolutely yes.”

“Wonderful. You can start tomorrow. Report to the top floor at 9 AM. The CEO likes punctuality.”

Emilia floated home that evening, feeling on top of the world. For the first time since her world had collapsed, she felt something like hope. She had a job. A good job that could sustain her.

She barely slept that night. She was too excited and nervous at the same time.

The next morning, she arrived at Cross Industries at 8:30 AM. She took the elevator to the top floor. Her heart was pounding as the doors opened to reveal a sleek, modern office space.

A secretary looked up and smiled. “Miss Anderson? The CEO is waiting for you in his office. Through those doors.”

Emilia smoothed down her suit and walked toward the large door. She took a deep breath, put on her most professional smile, and pushed the door open.

Emilia felt her world still as she was the man behind the desk.

Gray eyes, dark hair, a sharp jaw, expensive suit. It was him.

Her one-night stands!

A smirk appeared on Sebastian's face as he watched Emilia rush out. He certainly didn't know what came over him and had lost his composure immediately after Emilia stepped inside the room. The dress he ordered fit her like a second skin, and he couldn't help but recall the night they met.A walking temptation in red, and he couldn't help but feel magnetized to her just like he was now.Seeing one of his employees lash out at her definitely got under his skin, and it had taken all the self-control in him not to overreact.Gathering the files, he walked out of the boardroom as he stepped into the elevator.Sebastian dropped the files on Emilia's table as a thin smile appeared on his lips after recalling Emilia's flustered face.“Damon's company is planning to go into the perfume business as well.”Sebastian ignored Raphael's words as he stepped fully into the office. Damon wasn't a threat to him, and he knows all his antics will stop once he gets the mole in his company.“Where's the me

Sebastian ignited the engine back to life as he made a detour home. He had convinced Emilia to return with him so they could go over the contract together. That was only an excuse, though, as he would never allow her to pass the night there knowing whoever destroyed her apartment might still be lurking around.Though the hate directed at her online played a huge part in her decision, he wasn't pleased either, and would ensure the law takes its due course. “How many more minutes does it take to get home?” Emilia asked, yawning tiredly.Sebastian's lips twisted into a cold smirk as he heard her. He didn't have a home. He never did since Ava made the only place he considered home a nightmare to him.“We'll get to the house soon.” He said as he made a turn.Emilia nodded gently as she suppressed her yawn. Her body was aching badly after spending the entire day locked up, and she couldn't wait to wrap herself in the comfort of a duvet.Emilia's jaw dropped open in surprise as Sebastian dro

Sebastian sat at the restaurant as he watched the time pass by in a blur. It's been exactly eight hours since she excused herself to use the restroom and he had been foolishly waiting for her. Same way he waited Three years ago until he walked into a scene that left a scar in his heart until date.He picked up his phone that has been ringing nonstop for the past five hours as he swiped the receive icon.“Put the restaurant up for sale. Whatever you have to say can wait until I get to the office.” He said simply before ending the call.Sebastian drove straight to the office after ending the call, and Raphael's restless look was what greeted him.“I’m not in the mood for your nagging. I'll catch up with everything I missed today.” He said as he walked to his seat. “Photos of you and Emilia are on the front page of every article and blog. I thought you wanted to keep it private?” he asked, wondering what was going on in his mind. His marriage to Ava was only known to close family membe

Sebastian dropped Emilia after hearing the click of the camera, and the latter looked horrified.“None of the pictures would make it to the papers. The guards will take care of it.” He reassured her as they walked into the restroom. From the corner of her eyes, Emilia could see the guards pinning the paparazzi down and hijacking her camera. For a split second, she had forgotten she was with a renowned billionaire, and her little stunt would definitely make a controversy for hunger bloggers.Emilia's face flickered in disbelief as Sebastian led her to the top floor of the restaurant. She knew the restaurant like the back of her hand and knew the first floor was never rented out no matter the amount you were willing to spend. Her face brightened in admiration as she saw the interior of the restaurant. The rumors she had heard didn't do justice in describing the floor.“You must have really pulled a lot of strings to be able to rent here.” She said as she stepped in.Sebastian chuckled l

Sebastian ignited the vehicle as he drove home for the first time in three months. Since his return to America, he either spends the night in the office or at random hotels and bars. The fear that Ava's remains linger in the house has made him stay away from it, but he couldn't shy away any longer, especially when his mother was visiting. The room was sparkling clean as he stepped in. Despite his absence, Raphael had ensured to keep everything clean, which he was grateful for.Sebastian clenched his fist in annoyance as he pulled down the photo frame adorning the wall.A bitter smile escaped his lips as he chuckled dryly. He was such a fool after all. He had seen all the signs and had ignored them.He was still holding onto the photo frame when Raphael walked in.“We need to pull down everything from this house.” He said, dropping the frame. “What about these?” Raphael asked, pointing at the heap of files he came in with.“That can wait.” Sebastian stormed off after his word as the d

The night breeze blew gently as Emilia made her way home under the brightly illuminated light. She had returned to her office earlier without giving Sebastian a response.Pretending to be his fiancée was no big deal for her, but she wasn't confident enough to trust him with her big project.Recovering the company from Jason was still achievable, but she wasn't confident it would be the same once Sebastian got involved. He was a businessman after all and might be tempted to add the company to his group of companies. She sighs deeply as she takes a turn while thinking about the perfect excuse to give Sebastian until she is confident he won't convert the company. The loud horn breaks Emilia's train of thought as she glances briefly at the car behind her before continuing her journey.“Miss Anderson.”Emilia paused briefly as she took a few steps backwards, staring at the occupant of the vehicle. Her face didn't look familiar, and she couldn't recall meeting her before.“How may I help
