The Phone Rings

The Phone Rings:

I exit the mall with Logan. He opens the door of his car for me and closes it after I get in.

“You’re such a gentleman, Thank you”

“I try to be”

He laughs nervously and gets in the car.

While he drives, my mind spaces out to the previous night. I keep thinking about how he asked me to be his mate, despite knowing that I got rejected by my mate.

“Do you think it’s coincidental that we ran into each other?”

The sound of his voice brings me out of my thinking.

“I do, what else is it if not coincidence?”

“Fate? I believe that nothing is random, everything that happens is supposed to happen”

“Is that so? Interesting”

The car pulls up to a small café not too far from the mall. He turns around to open the door for me again and I oblige.

“Thank you”

“It’s nothing”

Logan’s smile is warm, whenever he smiles at me, my heart skips

He opens the door of the café and gestures for me to go in, I go in and he follows right behind me.

The café is a small and pretty place; the whole building is coated in the smell of caffeine, chocolate and vanilla. It’s painted purple with shades of other bright colors, like something out of a children’s book.

The walls are all transparent, outside cars zoom by and pedestrians majestically walk to their various destinations.

“ we sit by the glass walls please?”

“Why sure, that’s where I had in mind anyway”

He goes ahead of me and pulls out a seat

“Here you go, or would you prefer to sit on the opposite one?”

“No, this one is just fine; thank you”

I sit and he pushes the seat closer to the table for me. As he stands above me, I’m overwhelmed by the way he smells; Logan has a lovely smell. He turns around and sits directly opposite to me

“So…what do you want?”

He picks up a menu on his side of the table and I pick up mine.

“ think I’ll go with a latte”

“I’ll take a cappuccino”

A waiter comes over and takes our orders.

The café was exceptionally quiet with very few customers. I enjoyed the silence but it was starting to get awkward because Logan just stared at me, smiling the whole time

“What?”

I use a smile to hide my nervousness as he stares at me.

“You’re just so beautiful, I can’t help staring. Your eyes are enchanting”

“They are? Thank you”

I didn’t have a mirror on me but I could tell that my face was getting red with embarrassment.

“About what I asked the other day….”

“About that, the truth is….”

“I’m sorry I asked you”

I’m shocked by his statement, I try to talk but I just end up stuttering.

“S- so it was a mistake?!”

He laughs lightly, I feel like he is able to read my mind

“You didn’t let me finish, Ruby.”

“Oh, um…I’m sorry about that”

I overreacted but I only did so because I felt like I had been rejected by yet another alpha.

“I’m apologizing for asking you to be my mate so suddenly, I put you on the spot; I mean, I’m a total stranger to you”

“I didn’t hate it; in actuality, I liked it but I was shocked”

“Shocked? Why?”

“I have been rejected by another man, who would want a woman like me as his mate?”

“Me, I want you as my mate, and please stop referring to yourself as ‘a woman like me’ there is nothing wrong with you”

“You really feel so?”

“I do, honestly”

I bite my thumb nail in nervousness while avoiding looking at him directly

“Logan, I’ll be honest with you. I’ve been hurt so much in the past by that rejection and I’m scared to open up to anyone again”

He sighs in disappointment, although he tries to conceal the disappointment.

“I understand, so it’s a no then?”

“I’m sorry but yes, I can’t be with you right now.”

“I get up and grab my purse off the table to leave the café be he grabs my hand”

“What if I wait for you?”

“Wait for me?”

“Yes, what if I wait till you heal, will you give me a chance then?”

“You’re rich and you’re handsome, I’m sure you see a lot of women daily”

“I see a lot of women daily but they aren’t you; I don’t want them, I want you”

My heart almost jumps out of my chest when I heard what he said. I turn and take a look at him.

“I want you, Ruby. From the moment I saw you yesterday, I knew you were the one. More than anything, I wanted you in my life so I’ll wait for you”

My chest starts to feel hot; I recognize this feeling, it’s the same feeling I used to get whenever I talked to Layla’s brother, my first love.

“I am a woman who’s heart has been broken and shattered, you might have to wait a while”

“I see no problem with that, I’ll wait for you. I don’t care how long.”

“How about…. We stay friends for now?”

“I’ll gladly be your friend, if it means I get to be close to you”

Am I falling for Logan already? Everything he says and does makes my heart beat faster. I give him a smile of approval and he smiles back at me.

“Can I drop you off at home?”

“I don’t think that’ll be necessary”

“Please, I insist. I brought you here, it’s only right I take you home.”

We leave the café and Logan drives me home. Just as Logan is about to leave, my brother sees him and they have a small chat before he drives off.

My phone rings and I take it out of my purse. I check the caller, it’s a caller I never expect.
