Chapter 78

HAZEL

The morning sun streams through the windows, casting a warm glow over the breakfast table where Ethan, Arnold, and I are sitting to it. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingles with the scent of pancakes and bacon, filling the air with a comforting sense of home, and the steaming hot pieces of bread just sit in the centre of the table with different flavors to choose from. I’ve always loved meal times until now.

I pick at my food, my appetite dulled by the weight of the nightmare that still haunts in the back of my mind. Ethan and Arnold have exchanged concerned glances multiple times, and I have noticed that their brows are now furrowed with worry as they watch me push my food around my plate.

“Are you alright, Hazel?” Ethan asks, his voice soft with concern. “You seem a little out of it this morning.”

I force a smile, trying to shake off the lingering effects of the nightmare from the day before yesterday that still clings to me like a stubborn shadow.
