Mondrian

Alex left with a huff, glaring at me as he made his way out.

“Calm down Alpha.” he urges walking away.

At the slam of the door, I flicked the files arranged on my desk away, but my chest heaving.

Minutes passed and I was still riled up, I knew I needed to get some air, anything to calm down.

Heading for the garden, I stopped at Celene's favorite spot, my mind weighing heavily on me when I overheard some voices.

They belonged to Ethan and Daniel, guards of the pack, I am about to snap at them when I hear Celene’s name curious I listen in.

“Did you see that fight, Daniel? I mean it was crazy!!”

“Yeah, who would have thought Pecan that crazy woman would have her arse beat.”

“That's exactly my thoughts. I never knew Princess Celene had it in her. She always looked so meek.”

“Of course, she can't be meek, she's the Alpha, Luna to be. She has to have a hidden power right.”

“You are so right any one the Lycan king chooses has to be extraordinary. I can't wait for

184Celene Alex looked to Mondrain as if to ask for the go-ahead, Mondrian nodded softly, his arms wrapped around me, his nose nuzzling my neck.Although I found it inappropriate at the moment I couldn't bring myself to question his actions. We had spent so long denying our feelings for each other, blinded by betrayals, thoughts of revenge, and even pride, it had taken a kidnapping, an almost marriage, and death before we could confess.I could understand his clinginess. With a soft sigh, I leaned into his hold letting Alex's report filter through my mind.“After your return, and you fell ill, some of our spies reported Christoff's returns to the pack. Some speculated that he never left.”“And the staff?” I asked, with bated breath, Valerie's staff was a dangerous weapon, it had been a regret of mine that I hadn't managed to destroy it before we escaped.Alex frowned, his voice deepened, “Reports reveal he is still with the staff. Although there have been rumors that he has started

183Celene The conversation I had with Mondrian had been the right course of action. Mondrian's words, although crass and unapologetic had a soothing effect on me, it felt as though a burden had been lifted off my chest.I pulled away from my window, walking further into my room. Since returning I hadn't had time to look around but from the look of things it had been very well taken care of. A small smile graced my lips at the thought of Mondrian ordering the maids to clean despite my absence. It sent a jolt of warmth down my chest making me giddy. The memory of our last conversation replayed in my head, his words of love and promise, reminding me that I had done the right thing.“I can't promise not to sacrifice myself, if there's is even a single hope that it might save you, Celene.” He said, brushing the tendrils off my face.Alex's expression had darkened at his words, Arlen looked stricken, and Zara looked ready to jump him if she could get away with it, but they held back waiti

182 Mondrian The moment Alex reported Christoffs progress my blood boiled with rage. “That's impossible,” I objected, “I saw his body crumble under my fist, and Celene's power struck him square in the chest he should be dead.” Alex sighed, “That is what we thought in the beginning, we made plans to return after Celene was stable but our spies report that Christoff took over the pack the moment we stepped out, using his hidden Mercenaries and warriors loyal to him to subdue the people.” “What about the people? Did they not object to his rule? According to the laws of their pack, Christoff cannot be Alpha, he is neither a direct descendant nor mated to one does he have the authority to rule.” “They refused at first, rumours had spread of his actions towards the people, his cowardice and cunning against Celene and the Alpha, and the people had refused him as king, but he resorted to sorcery. Valerie's staff is still in his possession.” “Now that Christoff has declared himself Alph

181MondrianBeing alive again felt different. A few days ago I had walked out of her room where she lay fighting her demons to succumb to the curse.I had ignored the pleas of my most trusted men, urging me to wake her up and mate with her. Alex had stood at the forefront urging me to make her mine, insisting that Celene was willing. He'd shown great anger when I had refused, with no excuses. How was I to tell him that I couldn't hear to wake her up for my pleasure, not after she'd gone through the horror with Christoff, I couldn't bring myself to take again from her so I willingly accepted my fate. But Celene had done what I couldn't, broken through the barrier of life and death and dragged me out of it and for that I was grateful. Now lying in my quarters I could feel her immense energy coursing through my veins. Her powers and warmth mixed with mine to form a much tighter bond, different from the mating bond. The door to my room creaked, and I opened my eyes to find Alex standing

180CeleneThe air was filled with disbelief, everywhere I looked I met hard gazes, accusing and spiteful. They didn't believe my words, they couldn't and I tried to make them understand, but there was only so much I could say on my own.“he was never truly dead! He was in sleep I woke him up” I cried. This wasn't how It should have gone. Why couldn't they believe my words?“Lies!”“She turned him into a weapon. A mindless beast.”“We must kill the monster before the goddess gets angry at us!”“Never!” I screamed, burst of power lit up the room. The crowd moved back but their gaze remained fixed.“No one touches him.”Mondrian sat still, I couldn't count on him for help but when he'd just woken up from his four days slumber, he needed time.A female elder stepped forward, apprehensive, “Princess Celene how do you explain this?”I looked back at Mondrian and shook my head, “He is no monster, he is alive, my mate… please believe me.”The woman hesitated her eyes looked past me to Mondr

179CeleneNo. Impossible. The thought that the hours spent on the binding ritual had been for nothing disturbed me, I couldn't accept it.“No.” I whispered a ragged sob broke through my lips, “No…please.”“Mondrian! Please…I beg of you don't do this to me..” I. Cried rushing to pull the still body into my embrace, mondrian lay unmoving, his body cold. The crowd held their breath, their silence only made my fear surge, they watched with deep sorrow as I begged my mate to wake. One of the elders couldn't bear to watch me spiral, so he turned to Beta Alex, “Let us proceed.”Alex nodded, but hesitated looking past me and to my father. Alpha Daniel sighed then gave a subtle nod.I shook my head, scrambling away from reaching hands, “No! It isn't over. I can still do it.” Immediately the words fell through I placed my hand over his heart pushing the last of my energy into him until my head grew blurry.A hand grabbed at me and I twisted, struggling to escape, to get back to Mondrian. “No,
