I didn’t run and I didn’t turn around. I just grabbed my bag of groceries and walked out of the store like everything was fine.
But it wasn’t. I could feel them behind me, the two wolves, watching and following me. My heart was racing, but I kept walking. “One step at a time, Seraya. Don’t panic. Don’t look back.” I muttered to myself. The motel was only a few blocks away. If I could just get there on time.. I picked up my pace, walking faster and almost running. The footsteps behind me got louder. They weren’t trying to hide it anymore that they were following me. I reached the motel and went to my room. My hands shook as I pulled out the key. I was just about to open the door when a strong hand slammed into it, stopping me. I froze. “Going somewhere?” a deep voice said behind me. Shaking, I turned around slowly. The man in front of me stared back with piercing green eyes. He was tall and bulky, his broad shoulders stretching the fabric of his jacket. A weird smile tugged at his lips, and his eyebrows raised like he found the whole situation amusing. “Do you mind if we come in?” he asked, his voice smooth. I shook my head quickly, almost too fast. “I mind. Please, you can’t come in.” Behind him, the second man stood a few steps away, watching me. He was taller, wider and more intimidating. His face was stern, his jaw tight, and the way his muscles flexed under his shirt made it clear he didn’t joke with his gym lifestyle. I didn’t know who they were and I didn’t want to know but one thing was clear. They aren't people I want to mess with. Sorry, but I didn’t mean that as a question,” the one with green eyes said. Before I could react, he gently tried to shove me aside but I stood my ground, pressing my back to the door. I wasn’t going to let him in. But what chance did I have? I was just a weak, pregnant wolf and he knew it. He won. He pushed past me like I weighed nothing, stepping inside without hesitation. Then he turned, nodding toward me. “Come in,” he said like he owned the place. I stepped inside slowly, heart pounding. He dragged a chair away from the small table and sat down, crossing one leg over the other. “So… I’ll go straight to the point. Why is a pregnant and mated wolf hiding out in our small town?” I stared at him, silent. I had no intention of answering his questions. Damn the ability of other shifters to sense a pregnancy… or a bond. I thought I’d finally found peace here. A town full of humans, no pack, no rules. Just a place of quiet and peace. But I was wrong. So very wrong. “What do you want from me? And why did you follow me here?” I snapped, folding my arms tight across my chest. “I don’t think I’ve done anything wrong for you to come at me like this.” The green-eyed one leaned forward slightly, his smile fading. “Oh, you’ve done something wrong,” he said. “You might’ve just put our entire pack at risk.” I blinked, confused. “What?” He pointed to my neck. “From that mark, it’s pretty clear you’re mated to an Alpha and let’s not even talk about the fact that you’re carrying his pup.” His eyes narrowed. “If he finds out you’re here… do you really think he’ll take it easy on us?” “You don’t have to worry about that,” I said sharply. “Nothing like that is going to happen. He wouldn’t even come here or try to fight for me. I'm a hundred percent sure of that.” “Sorry,” he replied. “But we don’t have the luxury not to worry. And also, you need to come with us. You can’t stay here.” “I’m not going anywhere with anyone,” I hissed, stepping back and placing a protective hand over my stomach. “I’m staying right here.” “See, we mean no harm. But if we let you stay, you’ll bring danger to everyone here. This is for safety. No one’s going to hurt you.” “No! Stay away from me!” I almost screamed as the green-eyed man took a step toward me. He paused, hands raised, like he didn’t want to scare me off but the look in his eyes said he wasn’t backing off either. The second man still stood by the door. He hadn’t said a word since we got here. He just watched. Silent and unreadable and that somehow made the whole situation worse for me. “You can clearly see I’m not a threat,” I said, my voice shaking. “You’re overthinking this. My mate’s not coming. He never cared. He probably hasn’t even noticed I’m gone.” My voice cracked on the last word, but I kept going. “If you just leave me alone, I’ll disappear. You won’t even know I was here.” The green-eyed man sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. “I get it, okay? I’m not heartless. But pack rules are pack rules. And this… this isn’t something we can ignore.” I shook my head, backing up until my shoulders hit the wall. “You don’t understand. That man, my so-called mate, doesn't want me. He made that clear over and over again. I ran to save myself.” He looked at me, face softening for a second. But then his jaw tensed again. “It doesn’t matter how he feels,” he said. “You’re still marked. You’re still carrying an Alpha’s child. That puts our pack in danger whether you like it or not.” “That’s not fair!” I shouted. “I finally found a place where I can breathe, just breathe, and you’re telling me I have to give that up because of him?” “Not because of him,” he snapped. “Because of what he’ll do if he finds out. You think an Alpha lets his mate and unborn child vanish without consequences? If he tracks you here, he could burn everything down. Including us.” I stared at him, heart racing, throat tight. “So what? You’re dragging me back to him?” “No,”.. “We’re not taking you to him. We’re taking you to our pack, not to him.” My eyes darted between them. “Why should I trust you when I don’t even know who you are?”Kaden’s POVI couldn’t help the small smile that tugged at my lips as the memory of Seraya kissing me played in my mind for what felt like the hundredth time. It had caught me completely off guard and I wouldn’t lie that I was still in shock. One moment I was sure she wanted nothing to do with me, the next, her lips were on mine.I had always thought she truly hated me. She made it clear in her words and in the way she looked at me that she didn’t want to be near me. But now? I wasn’t so sure anymore. If she really hated me, then why would she kiss me? People don’t kiss those they despise, right? They even try to not be in close proximity with them. My thoughts were everywhere as I tried to understand what might have changed and I thought that maybe she didn’t hate me as much as I thought and maybe there was still a small part of her that still liked me or if it was something else entirely. I didn’t know but I wanted to have answers to my questions. But whether she meant it or not
Tessy rushed over the second she realized I was struggling. She grabbed my arm and started pulling it too, trying to help me get free from my mum’s grip, but it wasn’t working. We both pulled as hard as we could, but my mum’s fingers were like iron. Her thin, bony hands didn’t look strong, yet they held me in place and prevented me from moving. Her body kept shaking over and over again in an unnatural way. Her head twitched to the side as she mumbled words under her breath, but I couldn’t make out what she was saying. It sounded like another language, or maybe just nonsense.“This is why I told you not to come here!” Tessy cried out, her voice shaking with panic. She was pulling even harder now, but then she stopped when she saw something.I followed her eyes to what she was looking at and saw it too. There was blood on my hands. My mum’s nails had dug so deep into my skin that blood was running down my wrist.“Oh my god, you’re bleeding,” Tessy gasped. “What are we going to do? This
Hello!” I called out as I pushed the door open a little wider.“Oh no… you’re not supposed to say hello!” Tessy hissed at me trying so hard not to shout. She put her hand over her face like she couldn’t believe me. “You’re not supposed to announce you’re here. You’re not even supposed to be here. And now you’ve just made it worse by telling whoever might be here that we’re here too!”“You have a point,” I said with a shrug. I wasn’t really in the mood to argue with her, but I still talked, “At the same time, if there’s anyone inside, isn’t it better for them to know we’re not here to hurt them? What if we tiptoed in and they attacked us because they thought we were dangerous? This way, they know we mean no harm. Besides…” I paused to listen, “…no one answered, so that means no one’s here.”Tessy gave me a glare. “In movies, do you ever see people get an answer back when they yell hello in a creepy place?”I gave her a half-smile. “Well, we’re not in a movie… or are we?”“Seraya…” she
“How long do we have to walk again before we get to the end of the border?” I groaned, bending down to drop the heavy bag of salt on the ground. Sweat ran down my cheek, and I quickly wiped it away with my sleeve. My back ached from carrying the weight for so long.“I told you this place was huge, but you didn’t want to listen to me,” Tessy snapped at me, her voice filled with annoyance.“Well, I didn’t know you didn’t even know the directions,” I shot back, frowning at her.We had been walking for what felt like forever, round and round the pack’s land, trying to find the border but no matter which way we turned, it was like we were going in circles. I had asked Tessy several times if she was sure about where we were going, and every time she told me yes, to trust her because she had lived in the pack long enough to know the way. Now it was clear she had no idea, and we were lost.“Should we just go back?” she asked, sounding tired.I shook my head. “No, we’re not going back. I feel
I looked at the cover of the first book for a long time, trying to understand what was written on it. The letters were strange and twisted in ways I had never seen before. The more I stared, the less sense they made and my eyes felt heavy from just looking at them. I tried tilting my head to the side, as if that would somehow help me read them, but it didn’t.With a sigh, I decided to stop wasting time and just open the book. Maybe the inside would make more sense. The old pages made a dry cracking sound as I turned them and dust filled the air, making my nose itch again. Tessy was still eating, but I could feel her eyes on me. She watched as my eyebrows furrowed and my lips moved silently, trying to figure out the strange shapes on the page. I must have looked confused, because that was exactly how I felt.“Any luck?” Tessy asked between bites.I shook my head. “Not even a little,” I muttered.I turned the page again and saw a picture of something I recognized. It was a demon and it
I quickly jumped into the shower, the water running over me as I remembered that I was rushing in the first place because of Tessy. At first, I had planned to look at the books Kaden told me about before going to see her but I knew myself. If I tried to study those books now, I wouldn’t be able to focus. My mind would just keep going to her, wondering how she was, what Caleb might be doing to her, and if she was safe so Tessy came first.Thirty minutes later, I was out of the shower, dressed, and standing in the room with my towel still draped over my shoulders. I thought about leaving right away without eating but then my stomach growled so loudly it almost hurt so I decided to eat first.I went into the kitchen and made two sandwiches as fast as I could. I didn’t even sit down to eat before I shoved them into my mouth one after the other, barely tasting them before swallowing.Once I was done, I headed out.I walked for several minutes, scanning houses and trying to guess which o
