Chapter 2

Author: Icy Haven
"You're not welcome here! Get out now!" yelled the girl.

As Yvonne looked at the girl, her expression instantly turned grim, and her emotions flared up. She bit her lip tightly.

"Devin is your dad?"

Michael quickly shielded the girl behind him. "Lulu was originally an orphan in our town. Mr. Hoffman took pity on her and adopted her. Please don't take your anger out on a child."

"I'm taking it out on her?"

Yvonne grabbed the collar of the 60-year-old Michael. Her voice was filled with intense anger, and her eyes, which were full of heartbreak, reddened instantly.

"He abandoned our daughter and is indirectly responsible for our other daughter's death, yet here he is, adopting someone else's child! How could he do this to me?

"Alright, fine! Tell him our daughter's bone marrow transplant is in one week. If he has even a shred of conscience left, he will show up immediately!

"If he dares to keep pretending to be dead, then don't blame me for tearing this hut down and leaving the girl he adopted homeless!"

Under Michael's horrified gaze, Yvonne added coldly, "Even if Devin really is dead, I wouldn't mind digging up his corpse to get the marrow for my daughter. Do you understand me?"

Michael thought she was being utterly unreasonable. He held Lucy tightly as his lips quivered, unable to utter a word.

Just then, Yvonne's phone suddenly rang. The familiar ringtone indicated it was a call from someone special.

Her previously fierce gaze gradually softened. Before leaving, she glanced at Lucy and said in an icy tone, "Make sure you relay my message. Don't leave out a single word. I'll be waiting for his response."

As I watched her retreating back that was filled with rage, it felt like a heavy blow to my heart. The pain spread throughout my entire being.

I watched as Lucy picked up my funeral portrait, crying. She held it tightly against her chest as she sobbed heart-wrenchingly. My own heart felt unbearably heavy, as if it was blocked.

I wasn't deliberately hiding from Yvonne. I desperately wanted to save our daughter too.

But… I really was no longer among the living.

For some reason, my soul left the place I once guarded and followed Yvonne.

After she left the town, her tears didn't stop. However, she had always been stubborn, wearing sunglasses to shield her eyes from anyone's searching gaze.

Only I knew how her hands were gripping her own thighs as she suppressed her anger toward me.

"What an absolute bastard! How dare he use death to trick me! A leopard can't change its spots!"

She frantically dialed my phone number, but each time she only heard the message that the number was out of service, which made her even more frustrated.

"Devin, I'd better not catch you around!"

After the plane landed, a tall and handsome figure holding a bouquet of flowers waved at Yvonne from the arrivals gate.

I was all too familiar with that figure—it was Louis Floyd, Yvonne's childhood sweetheart.

The moment they met, Louis eagerly asked, "Did you find Devin? Is he willing to donate bone marrow for Selene?"

Yvonne let out a snort, her emotions having stabilized somewhat. "He's always been selfish. He probably got wind of it from somewhere, because the moment I arrived, he pretended to be dead and went into hiding.

"He doesn't even care how bad an omen it is. He even prepared a funeral portrait in advance."

Louis' eyes flickered slightly as he tentatively asked, "What if it's true? What if Devin really is dead?"

"Impossible! How could he be dead? He's so young!" Yvonne immediately denied it. "Even if he is dead, he still has to donate his bone marrow to my daughter!"

Upon hearing these words, my ears buzzed as if I had been suddenly pricked by a sharp needle.

However, in Yvonne's dream, I stood there in my suit and smiled awkwardly. In the dream, she tried desperately to see my face clearly. But she couldn't, no matter how hard she tried. It was as if a thin veil separated us, one she couldn't pull aside. She strained to keep her eyes closed, and when she woke up, her face was already streaked with tears. When Lisa saw Yvonne again, she had a disgusted expression as she asked, "Do you know why I look down on you?"Yvonne looked up, not understanding what Lisa was saying."I think you're a hypocrite."Lisa continued aggressively, "You kept saying you loved Devin, but you gave up on him over a few provocative words from others. Now that you're here putting on a show of devotion, who is it actually for? Isn't it just to make yourself feel better?"You say you love your child, but while you're here putting on your act, Selene was just discharged from the hospital not long ago. What about her? Who is taking care of her? She's the treasure

The USB drive Ava gave Yvonne that day contained surveillance footage of Louis bribing the nurse.Louis was ultimately sentenced to life imprisonment for attempted murder.I heard he went completely insane in prison, clamoring and making a scene about being the most handsome groom. It seemed as if everything had finally come to an end. With me by her side, Selene entered the operating room full of confidence.…After Selene's successful bone marrow transplant, she could no longer see me.Meanwhile, Yvonne returned to the town where I had volunteered after getting Selene settled down. This time, she encountered someone she never expected to see.Yvonne looked at the stone-faced woman before her and asked, "Lisa, you're back in the country?"Lisa Olson only replied coldly, "It's none of your business."Yvonne followed closely behind Lisa to the small hut, which had been repaired by now. Flowers were also planted all around the entrance.Lisa sat on a rocking chair, seeming lo

Louis' pupils widened sharply. He tried to stand up but felt completely weak all over."You…"The next second, he passed out.…Yvonne took Louis to the basement of a suburban villa and tied him to a chair, where she threw a basin of water directly onto his face.Louis gradually regained consciousness. While taking in the scene around him, he got goosebumps. He couldn't help but beg for mercy, "Yvonne—no, Ms. Larson—I'm begging you, let me go! Murder is against the law!""So, you know it's against the law?"Yvonne sneered slightly, finding it ridiculous that the man before her was talking about the law."Devin will never forgive you if he finds out you killed someone!" Louis exclaimed. When she heard this, Yvonne just said very quietly, "He's dead."Louis didn't take in what she said immediately. "Dead? What are you talking about? Who's dead?"Yvonne stepped forward and grabbed his chin. "You're still pretending? Weren't you the one who answered my phone and then blocked the

I wanted to be at Selene's side at every available moment. Nothing else mattered anymore. When I arrived at the hospital, Selene was staring at my photo and crying. When she looked up and saw me, she immediately buried her face in the blanket. Her voice was muffled as she said, "I'm a brave girl! Daddy didn't see me crying just now!"Selene could see me, but I didn't feel happy about it.But soon, she peeked her head out again and fixed her eyes intently on me. She seemed terrified that if she blinked, I would disappear instantly.I tried to speak, but no matter what I said, Selene just tilted her head, indicating she couldn't hear anything. It turned out she could only see me but not communicate with me.Just as I was racking my brain for what to do, I saw Selene pull out a dictionary from her heavy backpack.I used gestures to guide her to turn the pages and point out the words I wanted to say."Darling… most… amazing! Dad… loves… you!"In her childlike voice, she sounded o

Selene didn't even turn to look at Louis. Instead, she stared right at me. She looked so aggrieved as tears streamed down her face.I suddenly realized that my daughter could see me.At that moment, I was filled with panic. I was dead, so if Selene could see me, did that mean…No! It couldn't be!Yvonne walked to the bedside and ruffled Selene's hair with her hand. "Why is my darling crying? You didn't even cry during chemo before!"Selene kept staring in my direction. She quietly wiped her tears with her hand and sniffled as she said bravely, "Dad, I'm a brave girl. Please don't leave me."Louis quickly interjected, "Why would we leave you? What nonsense are you saying?"I felt my heart ache while looking at Selene, and I apologized to her for not being able to stay with her.Yvonne discussed the upcoming surgery details with the hospital staff around her."Devin hasn't been found. Are you sure it's okay to schedule the surgery just like that?" Louis asked."My bone marrow i

Ava continued, "It's because someone tampered with the food he ate daily. You ate that food too. During your pregnancy, you ingested large amounts of chloramphenicol. Even if the child had been born, it would have been severely deformed…"Back then, Devin was in so much pain. He called you so many times, wanting to discuss it with you and talk it through properly. He was truly terrified you would break down."Ms. Larson, you didn't answer a single call."Yvonne's pupils contracted sharply. Her whole world seemed to collapse in an instant, and she quickly spoke up."That's impossible! Everyone around me was someone I trusted! Who would…"She froze, for the answer became painfully obvious.Ava glanced at her sideways, her expression full of mockery as she smiled. Who else could it be? It was your capable assistant and your current fiance, Louis!"Ava walked to the door of the consultation room and opened it."Yvonne, aborting that child was more painful for him than for you. He p
