Chapter 5

Penulis: Yumi
Calista turned back to look at Isaac again. This time, she saw urgency in his eyes. How was that possible?

Even when they were married, he'd never been desperate to fall into bed with her. Besides, she'd signed the divorce papers a year ago.

She believed he would have been over the moon upon receiving the documents, especially after seeing that she'd agreed to leave without a penny. Knowing how much he loved Caroline, she figured that he must have finalized the divorce immediately after signing the papers.

She didn't know what he was playing at, now that they were divorced. What did he mean by saying that they could have another daughter? Hadn't he seen how Anthony had turned out?

Calista had raised Anthony as if he were a treasure, yet the young boy now only had eyes for Isaac. After the incident two years ago, he'd refused to call her "Mom", even to this day. He even made it clear that he didn't want her as his mother. He wanted Caroline, a homewrecker, to play that role!

Calista snapped, "You're crazy, Isaac!"

With that, she turned and stormed off without looking back. The only thing she wanted to do now was visit Anna and Elizabeth.

When Calista returned home, she heard Shirley consoling Caroline. "You have to bear with this, Carrie. Tony's life is on the line. You can only blame the heavens for this. This is an obstacle that you have to face. Tony is what matters now. You love him so much, don't you? You can't watch—"

A maid's voice cut in just then. "Mrs. Halston, you're back."

Shirley and Caroline both looked up. Shirley was startled and averted her gaze diffidently when she met Calista's eyes.

Meanwhile, Martin was surprised. "Liss, didn't you and Isaac head to a hotel? Why are you back?"

"I came to get something. I'm going to the hospital and the psychiatric hospital," Calista explained.

Caroline approached her. She could tell from the moisture and redness of the former's eyes that she'd just cried. However, Caroline remained as poised as before and said gently, "I'll arrange for someone to go with you."

Calista frowned and brushed past her as she walked away. "Don't bother."

When did anyone put Caroline in charge of this household?

Brushing past Caroline was a gentle act, but Anthony saw it differently when he came downstairs. He ran to them and stood before Caroline, stretching out his arms defensively.

Calista looked at him. Earlier, when she'd tried to hug him, he'd fearfully hidden behind Caroline. But now, when he thought Calista was going to hurt Caroline, he mustered the courage to stand before the latter protectively. It was as if he thought that Calista—his mother—was some terrifying monster.

At that moment, Calista seemed to be able to hear her heart break into pieces.

Anthony roared, "Don't hurt Aunt Caroline! I hate you!"

That caught Calista off guard. Caroline held his hand and said, "Tony, your mother wasn't bullying me. Hurry up and apologize to her."

He didn't. Instead, he gently touched her eyes and said, "Aunt Caroline, you cried."

He turned back to Calista and shouted, "Dad wouldn't want anything to do with you if it weren't for wanting another baby for the umbilical cord blood! Aunt Caroline wouldn't be sad!"

At his words, everyone cried out anxiously, "Tony!"

Calista was rooted to the spot, feeling like she'd been struck by lightning. Instantly, she broke out in a cold sweat. She hadn't understood what Isaac had been up to before, but she sure as hell knew now. This was the truth…

She couldn't deny that she'd been too proud to back down in the past, resulting in her going to prison. In the early days of her imprisonment, she figured that Isaac would regret what he'd done and bail her out. But as more time passed, she'd lost hope.

Now that Isaac and the Stones had gotten her out, she had actually felt a little hopeful. Yet, it turned out that they just wanted to use her.

Isaac caught up just then and entered the house. When he saw the looks on everyone's faces, he reached out to hold Calista's hand gently, saying cajolingly, "We can take things slow if you're not used to this."

Calista shook him off and turned to look at him with an iciness he'd never seen before. She said, "Tell me why you need umbilical cord blood, Isaac."

Gideon looked at Calista. He couldn't believe that she could joke at a time like this. The tears on her face weren't a figment of his imagination, though. He reached out a beautiful hand to wipe them away, saying, "Isaac Halston is a piece of trash. He couldn't care less about his wife, yet he's so concerned and intimate with his subordinate."Calista said, "That's where you're wrong. My existence is the only thing that's keeping them from officially getting there.""He can choose to get a divorce before treating another woman well. Someone with such poor character is truly unworthy of all the resources you threw his way back in the day."She looked at him and asked, "You even found out about that?"Gideon said, "I was just concerned about my kidney."As they spoke, they heard another commotion from outside. A group of doctors hurried past their hospital ward. Needless to say, they were there to check on Caroline.Gideon sarcastically asked, "Is it necessary to go to such length

Connor hurriedly said, "Dad, Liss has changed so much since getting out of prison. She's not close to us anymore. You can lecture her, but don't get physical."Caleb chimed in. "He's right, Dad."Seeing that both of them had spoken, Shirley didn't think it would be right for her to speak up against them. So, she went along with them and said, "Martin, Calista is the daughter you've pampered since childhood. You can't actually hit her."That only made Martin angrier. "It's my fault that she's turned out the way she is now! I pampered her so much that I spoiled her rotten. That's why she's acting this way! I missed the chance to teach her the right things back then, so I need to make up for that now and bring her back onto the right path. I can't let her continue like this!"We're family, and we should be united and harmonious. Think about how well all of us got along without her around! She's staying in a hotel now, yet she's still capable of wreaking havoc at home. Do you think we

Calista's mind went blank for an instant. She couldn't remember why she'd fallen in love with Isaac and even pursued him. Someone had to have cursed her, right? She turned to look at Isaac, suddenly finding him to be such a stranger. She couldn't understand what exactly she had loved about him all these years. She abruptly screamed hysterically, "Stop the car!"Isaac had only ever seen a Calista who was demure and spoke gently. So, her sudden scream startled him.The driver turned to look at him. Calista glared at him and snapped, "I told you to stop! Didn't you hear me?"He was frightened by her. So, he got off the highway just then and pulled the car over, skidding to a stop.Isaac only returned to his senses just as Calista opened the car door. He reached out to grab her, but she was faster than he was. Before slamming the door in his face, she growled, "I seriously regret having ever known you!"Nicco's car stopped behind them and conveniently picked her up. He didn't ask he

Nicco stared at Isaac before turning to Calista. His bewilderment was written all over his face.Calista took a deep breath, wanting nothing more than to slap herself hard. She didn't know what the hell had gotten into her back then. She couldn't believe how Isaac's studious, outstanding side had blinded her.She did a double-take. Hadn't Isaac left with Caroline as everyone watched earlier? So, why was he still there?Nicco knew that it was his time to shine. This was his chance to back Calista up. He said breezily, "I know she has a child, too."Isaac's expression turned even uglier. He growled, "I wouldn't have pegged you as someone with such a fetish, Mr. Ashford."Nicco retorted, "It seems that you were dressed to impress today, Mr. Halston. You and Ms. Lynch look good together—disgustingly good, I should say."Isaac's expression stiffened. He had a feeling that Nicco was insinuating something with his words and tone, but he was more inclined to believe that the latter had j

Caroline was furious. It was bad enough that Isaac wasn't paying attention to her at all. But now it seemed that he was about to approach Calista. Her mind raced as she considered the situation. Caroline considered how it would reflect on her if Isaac headed over there now and made everyone realize how he and Calista were related. Most people in the industry thought that she and Isaac were together, and some people had even openly complimented them for being a perfect match. Moreover, Isaac had never rebuked them. But if he were to head to Calista and destroy this balance, what would everyone present think of Caroline? How humiliated would she be? She wasn't a nobody in this industry! After running through all of this, Caroline instinctively reached out to grab Isaac's arm. As he looked down at her, she leaned her head against his arm while pressing her other hand t

Calista felt sick the moment she heard Caleb's voice. She wondered exactly whose brother he was.She snapped herself out of it. She couldn't think that anymore. He'd long since taken on the role of being Caroline's brother.Caleb stepped forward, wanting to pressure Calista into apologizing to Caroline. At the same time, Shannon sidled up to him and hooked her arm through his.Realization dawned on Calista when she saw that. It seemed that Shannon had latched onto Caleb long ago. It turned out that she and Caroline were on the same team. It explained why she'd picked on Calista so directly earlier. She and Caroline both wanted Calista out of the picture, as they would both benefit from that.Shannon tugged on Caleb's arm, turning on the charm as she said, "I only just realized that she's your sister, Caleb.
