Coming to Silverreach was unplanned… well, at least attending the howling ceremony of the omega was for me. Like always, it was yet another month for my herbs that did nothing but continue to confine me to the wheelchair to be picked.
The best herbalists were in Silverreach, and like the most loving brother Vegas was, he had reached out to them.
Silverreach smelled the same as I remembered; winter roses perfumed the cloudy snow, a total contrast to what the kingdom stood for.
"Faster," Vegas snapped at the slave behind my chair, and the poor Alavin's hands tightened on the handles as he pushed harder and faster. I kept my gaze to the ground. There was nothing interesting worth looking at.
As we got to the car, Vegas's phone vibrated in his pocket. "Carry him inside," he hissed before walking away as if I were some kid.
Alvin bowed and nodded. He reached for my hand, but I held him back.
"You know you can leave at any moment. Others will…"
"I will die before I leave your side, Alpha," Alvin whispered, then pressed my hands for some warmth.
A beta worth a thousand lives, the one family I still had even in my desperate and worst moments. His past victories by my side couldn't be denied, and the sparkling resume he carried meant getting a dignified job with amazing pay wasn't a matter to be questioned, but here he was by my side, subjected to the status of a slave.
Alvin helped hold the door, and I pushed myself up from the chair. I've been confined long enough to be used to my predicament.
"No need to go back now. We can attend the howling ceremony of Prince Rain Vale," Vegas announced from behind as he walked over and grabbed his coat from inside the car.
"I… I could stay back," I whispered.
"Come on, Caelan, can you always stop playing the victim? I didn't say you couldn't come. Now you make people see me like the bad person that doesn't care about his crippled brother."
Of course, he had to outline every word.
"You're coming with us, Alvin… I don't want to be late."
Some words didn't need outlining for understanding; actions conveyed more.
The arena doors opened, and the echoes of voices spilled out. "The Alpha of Moonfang and his brother," we were announced inside, and the whispers began instantly.
The guards couldn't hide their contempt. I didn't belong in this circle… not anymore. Once, I had walked through these same gates with pride, power, and integrity, but right now, I was nothing but a spectacle of humiliation, pity, and disgrace.
My attendant had rushed home three nights ago after his mate went into labor, leaving Alvin alone, and he couldn't drive, not with his phobia of the wheels. And Vegas, my ever-caring brother, had cursed for an hour about the inconvenience.
Three years ago, I was the alpha; I could walk, and my capability wasn't in question. Now, three years later, I am a joke, a post for pity.
My fingers tightened beneath the blanket over my legs. The stares never ceased. I tried hard to keep my head down, wanting nothing but to blend in… but how could I with a fucking chair attached to my waist?
Still contemplating my thoughts, just then the scent hit me. My mouth watered. My nose sniffed wildly… wild lily.
For a second, I forgot how to breathe.
Then the unimaginable happened.
It woke up.
Three years of silence, pain, and no word… my wolf stirred.
Mate, it declared.
My hands trembled as memories flooded. Three years ago, it was the same scent… same wildness. I could feel him from miles away. He was close.
The bond snapped into place, then everything crumbled in minutes. Rain wet the soil, and blood flowed.
Vegas was saved, but I lost part of me, and just as quickly as the bond had snapped into place, it shattered, and my wolf was gone with my mate.
And now… He stood at the front, with black curly shoulder-length hair, pale white skin, and dazzling green eyes that threatened to swallow. Honestly, he looked nothing short of a dream come true…but not mine.
My hands gripped the armrest. Panic flooded every bit of me. This had to be a cruel joke. There was no way the Moon would choose a cripple for an omega heir in a kingdom where his kind is not meant to rule but to serve.
He needed power…stability, dominance, and control…and I was later of all of it.
"Caelan?" Vegas murmured, clearly irritated. "What is wrong with you now?"
But I couldn't answer because he was walking closer, and with every step he took, my world crumbled, yet my wolf, my body, and my instincts cheered.
I could see the vibrant smile on Vegas's face as the omega heir stood before us. Deep down, I wished he would declare my brother his mate. He would discard this mistake… This chaos in waiting to happen in the name of a bond.
But no. He was daring. Daring enough to kneel before me and proclaim me his.
"Don't," I whispered.
This was Silverreach, a place I once sat and negotiated trade and sat in war councils.
I knew their laws enough to know an omega could barely rule, and a cripple… would never.
His howling ceremony wasn't for mate bonding… It was for the alliance, a desperate attempt to marry off their heir to power, and I was anything but that.
He leaned closer, close enough for the entire kingdom to hear words that shattered my world for the second time.
"Mate."
As gasps tore through the arena, my world ended. The scene was enough to know he was challenging that which he shouldn't, and I… I was only a pawn in his sick game.
And like always, I was helpless. Stuck to a chair to leave, stuck to a chair to reject him, stuck to a chair to have my thoughts considered.
Three years ago, the Moon saved my brother and gave me a mate, but turned around and took my mate and my legs, and today, yet again, she has granted me another mate… an omega heir who looks at me like a weapon and uses me as a pawn to piss off his father.
I didn't know which was crueler.
Third personThe entire arena held its breath. Thunder roared across the sky, and lightning struck from every direction. Even the pillars that held the chains collapsed with a great thundering echo. Rain was still. He didn't move, and he didn't reach for Cealan, at least, not yet. His mismatched eyes stared at the priest, then at his brother. The Moon was not done answering Rain. The bowels of the sky opened, and heavy droplets poured down in fury. The blazing fire was extinguished within minutes, drenching everything and everyone. Yet no one could leave. They were all rooted to their knees. Rain turned, and it was then that he looked at his mate.Cealan was weak. His eyes still showed courage, but his body was failing. Rain wanted to carry him away, to call for a doctor, but today's incident had to be ended once and for all. Leaving abruptly would only make tongues wag faster, so he did the only thing that came to mind. He knelt down to Cealan's level. Cealan's weak hands reached fo
The High Priest stepped forward, then lifted his staff."The Moon sees it all," he repeated."And today, the Moon's will shall prevail," Thorn continued like the saint he was."If your wolf is pure... you shall survive," he said sternly, staring at Prince Rain. Then his gaze flickered to Cealan."If your wolf has been tainted... the Moon shall erase."The crowd quickly erupted with chants calling for justice.Everyone wanted the supposed will of the Moon to prevail."Crown Prince Rain, you have been accused of possessing an unstable wolf," Thorn said."Do you deny these accusations?"Rain slowly opened his eyes. His gaze fixed on his dying mate."No..." he answered. The crowd erupted.Marcus smiled."What are you doing?" Cealan reached forward, but he was quickly yanked back by the chains.Rain let out a heavy breath."Do you admit your wolf has endangered this kingdom?" Thorn asked."No," Rain answered again.A terrifying silence followed."My wolf has only protected what belongs to
Third personThe arena fell silent. Everyone held their breath. Even the birds in the sky seemed to pause and watch. For a heartbeat, everyone swallowed hard, then another agonizing scream tore through Cealan's throat. His body trembled, his hands fell to his sides, and the chains tightened further as the guards pulled on every end. The chains cut through his flesh, and fresh blood trailed down his body. Beneath him, it flowed into the ancient markings on the ground as they glowed, and it was then that Rain clearly saw what was happening. The chains weren't about the ritual. They weren't about proving who was guilty or not. They were draining Cealan's life force.Rain couldn't breathe. His breath caught. Every instinct screamed at him to break the promise. Raze slammed harder than ever, wanting to take control. At this point, he didn't care about the consequences. All he wanted was to save their mate. But Rain seemed to have frozen. He wasn't moving. His eyes stared fixed on the glowi
Third personRain's breath was slow, and so was Cealan's. Whatever Thorn Ville was reciting was making them weaker by the minute and forcing Raze out. But Rain couldn't bring himself to take his wolf form. Not only was he weak, but he feared the aftermath. It was one thing for them to force his wolf out, but it was another to torture his mate. Raze was fuming; his voice had gone cold, and his temper was at its peak. Rain feared not only for the priest but also for the people and everyone watching, including his brothers. This was not ordinary; it was a well-hatched plan to strip him of everything, and this time they did not just come for his life but for everything about him. They wanted him gone and erased, along with everything tied to him, even his mate, for the wrath of an Enigma after losing his mate would not be something Silverreach could contain.Rain's lips curled. He drew in a long breath, then let it out. His eyes turned to Cealan, who seemed to be regaining himself. No ma
Third personThe palace bells rang continuously, but it wasn't to celebrate anything... not the upcoming wedding of Prince Rhett or the soon-to-be coronation of Prince Marcus... but to summon every noble, priest, and elder, including the people, to the execution arena where the ancient wolf judgement ritual would be held until sundown. The noise echoed through the kingdom, and within the palace the servants went ahead to serve breakfast. Everyone was obligated to come down and dine together, so reluctantly they pulled themselves off their beds, freshened up, and got dressed in white robes and garments specifically prepared for the occasion.Everyone, including the Southern royals, sat down for breakfast and waited on the king, who arrived just in time. He sat down. The meal looked tasteful, but many seemed to have lost their appetite. The king cleared his throat."Today may be the last day we sit whole, and we sit to honor this day."He went on to give a speech about bonding as a fami
Third PersonThe kingdom held its breath for two days. Everyone expected the outcome to be bad, so preparations had begun in silence.Within the king's private chamber, Prince Marcus and his mother, Morgan, stepped in for the first time since Rain's imprisonment."My king," Morgan purred as she stepped forward.King Aldric did nothing to stop her wandering fingers from roaming all over his body. He was worried, his brows furrowed, but it was not at her. It was a fact that the man he called his mate had left the palace three days ago and was yet to return or send word about his safety and whereabouts. King Aldric was even more worried because the guard trailing Bel had lost him, and now two others couldn't locate him.Marcus took a seat opposite his parents, his head held high and his eyes burning with hope.King Aldric cleared his throat and slightly shifted forward."How is preparation going?" he asked so calmly that one would think he was talking about the weather."Everything is go
Caelan MoonfangThe arena never recovered from the chaos, and neither did I. The word "mate" spread like a contagious flu; gasps and murmurs rippled through. Eligible alphas cursed, high-class nobles snorted, and he… he remained kneeling as if nothing bothered him, but his eyes stayed on mine long
Rain ValeEveryone was staring. The ceremony had turned to chaos in seconds. My brothers stood by the side, fuming, claws out and ready to bounce on me at any given chance, and my father and his ministers stood still, bewildered and so angry smoke threatened to sprout from their wrinkled ears."The

Rain ValeThe morning air chills sliced through the high windows of Silverreach Palace like a hunting blade. Inside, the air was thick with wild lily, a rather odd scent for an omega, but I wasn't like others. The deal event was only an hour away: my Howling Circle, known as the mating ceremony.I
