The house was quiet when Kael stepped inside.

Warm light spilled across the living room. For the first time all day, the place felt calm.

The faint scent of brewed tea lingered in the air.

“Kael”

The voice came from the living room.

He loosened his tie slightly as he walked in.

His grandmother sat comfortably on the couch, a cup of tea resting in her hands.

Her eyes lifted the moment she saw him, a gentle smile forming on her lips.

“I was starting to think you would sleep at the office.”

“There was so much to do today,” Kael replied.

“You always say that.”

He didn't respond, he sank into the seat across from her, resting his arm lightly against the side.

She took a slow sip of her tea, watching him.

"You have that look again."

"What look?"

"The one you get when you've already made up your mind.”

"Something's bothering you.” She continued.

“It's nothing I can't handle.”

“You've always said that.”

"This has something to do with your company.”

“You're getting involved again, aren't you?”

She paused, watching to see his reaction.

“Or is it something else?”

His silence was answer enough.

“You always think you can handle everything.”

She smiled sadly.

“You can’t.”

She reached over to pour him tea, and he accepted it, sipping slowly without saying a word.

She stared straight at his face once more.

"I know that look."

"No one can change your mind once you've made a decision.”

“Yes,” he replied after what seemed like ages.

“It's already started.” His voice was almost like a whisper.

“Just be careful.” She replied.

Neither of them spoke again. They both knew there was no changing his mind.

Whatever lay ahead, he'd already made his choice. There was no turning back now.

***********

The apartment was dark when I finally made it home. I didn’t bother turning on the overhead lights.

I just dropped my keys on the counter, kicked off my heels, and sank onto the edge of my bed, staring blankly at the wall.

My thoughts refused to slow down. Kaelen's warning kept replaying in my head, along with Robert's threat and the image of my wiped computer screen.

Three days.

Somehow I had to dig through altered records without alerting the people who were hiding them.

A sharp, vibrating buzz cut through the quiet.

The screen lit up.

Maggie.

I sighed, a faint, genuine breath of relief escaping my nose.

Margaret was my only real friend, but she was also a thunderstorm of hyperactive energy.

“Oh thank god, you're alive!" Margaret’s voice exploded through the speaker, fast and loud enough that I had to pull the phone a few inches away from my ear.

"I’ve been waiting all day! It’s day two, Quincy. Day two! Give me the details. Tell me you didn’t quit. Tell me you haven’t been swallowed whole by corporate America.”

"I'm alive," I said, leaning back against my pillows, my voice dry. "I didn't quit.”

"Okay, good. Because I looked up Sanders Tower on I*******m, that lobby alone looks more expensive than my entire life. Are you a big corporate girl now? Do you have your own desk? Please tell me you have a window view.”

"I have a cubicle," I corrected, a small smile finally pulling at the corner of my lips.

"And plenty of work to keep me there.”

"Ugh, boring. Bounce past the work. Let’s talk about the actual perks of the job.”

I could hear the grin in her voice. "The boss, Kaelen Sanders. Tell me the truth, is he actually as ridiculously hot in person as he is on the news? Because if a man looked at me with those jawline-and-suit vibes every morning, I’d forget how to type.”

If only she knew.

To everyone else, Kaelen Sanders was the billionaire on magazine covers.

To me…

He was something else entirely.

"He's just a boss, Maggie," I said quietly, keeping my tone casual.

"Mostly he just hands out impossible deadlines and stares at people until they lose their minds.”

"Boo. You have zero romance in your soul, Quincy Hale. If I were his assistant, I’d be practicing my wedding signature on the company post-it notes."

Margaret giggled, but then her voice softened slightly, a rare moment of perception breaking through her chatter.

"You sound tired, though. Seriously. Is it going okay?”

"It's just a lot of data to catch up on," I lied smoothly. "I'm fine. I'm just exhausted.”

"Alright, alright. I'll let you go to sleep. But you owe me drinks this weekend, corporate girl. Full breakdown. No filtering."

"Deal. Goodnight, Mags."

"Night!”

The line went dead. I dropped the phone onto the mattress beside me, the silence of the apartment settling back. I closed my eyes, inhaling slowly, trying to let go of the day's tension.

Nothing about this company made sense. I was a target on the floor, a pawn in the executive office, and—

The phone buzzed again.

I sighed in frustration.

“Oh Maggie, what again?”

I turned to look at the screen, but as I stared at the caller, every bit of warmth drained from my body.

The phone kept vibrating, persistent in my trembling palm.

No.

Not now.

I reached for the folder, my fingers hovering over its cold surface. What game was Kaelen Sanders playing? And why did I have the feeling I was walking straight into a trap?I don't know what I was expecting. Encrypted files, evidence of bribery tucked between the pages. Instead, I found page after page of ordinary corporate records.I flipped through the pages while Kaelen stared at me without saying a word. The silence stretched long enough to become uncomfortable. When I reached the last page, I closed the folder and looked up."These numbers are clean," I said, my voice deadpan."Go on," Kaelen urged."That's the problem. They're too perfect."I tapped the report."No company this size has books that look like this. There are always small mistakes—rounding errors, damaged inventory, exchange-rate differences. But this?" I looked back at him. "Someone polished these records until they looked flawless. That's what makes them suspicious.”A minute passed."Someone's hiding," I

Heavy morning traffic had eaten thirty minutes of my life, leaving me trapped in a stationary car while the digital clock on my phone ticked mercilessly toward nine o'clock. By the time I walked into the lobby, it was 9:24 AM.I kept my spine straight as I approached the security gates. The receptionist didn't even lift her chin, keeping her eyes fixed on her screen in a move of calculated ignorance. I returned the favor, sweeping past without a single glance. Before I could barely settle in my seat, the office line rang, instincts telling me who it was.“My office, now”.My jaw tightened. Of course. When I entered the top floor, Kaelen Sanders was exactly where I had left him yesterday."You're twenty-four minutes late, Miss Hale”."Traffic was compromised, Mr. Sanders," I replied, my voice flat, holding his piercing gaze without a single flinch."It won't happen again.""I don't care about the logistics of your morning," he cut in coldly. "I care about results."He reached into a

When the elevator doors slid open on the third floor, the ambient sound of ringing phones, clicking keyboards, and low, hurried murmurs hit me like a physical wall. Marcus didn't say a word as he led me down the central carpeted aisle. As we walked past the rows of modular desks, the busy chatter of the floor systematically died down.Heads turned. A heavy, collective silence followed us down the corridor. I could feel the weight of their stares pressed against my skin—apprehensive, deeply curious, and laced with a distinct, wicked hostility. In a global empire like Kael Industries, news traveled at terminal velocity. They knew exactly who I was. They knew about the ruined record, the trail of terminations, and the fact that I had bypassed every standard corporate protocol to end up here. The looks they gave me made it clear they thought I didn't belong in their pristine tower.I didn't flinch. I kept my stride smooth and my gaze fixed straight ahead. If they expected me to shr

The lobby of Sanders Tower didn’t look like a place where people came to work. It looked like a monument designed to remind you exactly how small you were.I stepped across the polished white marble, my heels clicking in a rhythmic, unyielding cadence that echoed against the soaring glass atrium. I kept my chin up, my posture rigid, and my expression locked in a mask of absolute indifference. My clothes were the best I had left—a tailored black blazer and a crisp, high-collared shirt. It was my armor.I approached the massive, crescent-shaped security desk. The receptionist sat behind a glass partition, her fingers moving lazily over a touchscreen. When I stopped in front of her, she paused, lifting her chin to scan me. Her gaze was instant, accusatory, and heavily laced with a judgmental stiffness. She obviously knew who I was. Or rather, she knew the chaotic, ruined record attached to my name in the system.I didn't break eye contact. I simply stared back, matching her hostilit

  • UNDER HIS RULES: Trapped in his game   Chapter 2- KAEL SANDERS

“Mr. Sanders… Mr. Sanders…”I turned my head slowly, fixing my gaze on the short, scrawny man seated across from me. He had been rambling for what felt like an hour, his voice pitching higher with every fabricated projection he threw my way.“Ha…” he laughed nervously, adjusting his tie under my silent scrutiny. “I’m sure you didn’t quite catch what I said. I don’t mind starting over from the beginning of the pitch.”Of course you don’t.I leaned back in my chair, studying him carefully. His fingers fidgeted against the leather file in his lap, his eyes darting between my face and the expensive minimalist décor of my office as if searching for approval in the very walls. He was the type who would worship the ground I walked on if I allowed him within two feet of it.“I’ll get back to you,” I said flatly, closing the file in front of me with a deliberate snap and waving my hand dismissively.Relief flooded his face instantly, lifting the tension from his shoulders.“Oh sure, absolu
