Eleanor stood in the doorway.

Her hand was still on the frame. Her breath was caught somewhere between her chest and her throat. Her heart was pounding so loud she was certain they could hear it.

Victoria was sitting on the couch. On her couch. In her house. Smiling.

"Hello, Eleanor. It's been a while."

Eleanor didn't move. She couldn't move. She just stood there, staring at the woman who had been sleeping with her husband for five years. The woman who had given birth to the child she had raised. The woman who had orchestrated the entire deception. The woman who had sent her a text just hours ago: Stay away from my son.

"Victoria," she said. Her voice was steady. She didn't know how. "What a surprise."

Julian stood up. He looked nervous. On edge. He kept glancing between them, like he was waiting for something to explode.

"Victoria was in the neighborhood," he said. "She wanted to say hello."

Eleanor looked at him.

In the neighborhood.

She wanted to say hello.

She wanted to laugh. She wanted to scream. She wanted to grab the lamp off the side table and throw it at his head.

She didn't.

She smiled.

"How thoughtful," she said.

---

She walked into the kitchen.

She poured herself a glass of water. Her hands were shaking. She set the glass down. Breathed. Counted to ten. Counted to twenty. Counted to thirty.

Then she walked back into the living room.

Victoria was still on the couch. She looked comfortable. At home. Like she belonged there. Like she'd been there a hundred times before.

She probably had.

Eleanor sat in the armchair across from her. Crossed her legs. Smiled.

"So," she said. "How have you been, Victoria?"

Victoria smiled back. It didn't reach her eyes.

"I've been well. Busy. You know how it is."

"I do."

"How about you? How's Ethan?"

Eleanor's jaw tightened.

The question was a test. A provocation. A reminder.

She's my son.

Eleanor met her eyes. Held them. Didn't blink.

"He's wonderful," she said. "Growing up so fast. You wouldn't believe it."

Victoria's smile flickered.

Just for a second.

Just long enough for Eleanor to see it.

---

Julian cleared his throat.

"So," he said. "Victoria was just telling me about her new project at the university. She's been doing some really interesting work."

Eleanor looked at him.

He was trying to fill the silence. Trying to make small talk. Trying to pretend this was normal. Trying to pretend his wife and his mistress were just two friends catching up.

She wanted to laugh.

Instead, she said, "That sounds fascinating. Tell me more."

Victoria launched into a detailed explanation of her research. Something about educational psychology. Something about developmental stages. Something about children.

Eleanor listened.

She watched.

She waited.

Victoria was good. She was smooth. She was practiced. She talked about her work with authority and passion. She was clearly intelligent. Clearly ambitious. Clearly used to being the smartest person in the room.

But Eleanor saw something else.

She saw the way Victoria's eyes kept drifting to the hallway. To the stairs. To the bedrooms. To the rooms she'd never been allowed to see. To the life she'd been excluded from.

She saw the way Victoria's hands kept clenching and unclenching. The way her jaw kept tightening. The way her smile kept flickering.

Victoria wasn't here to say hello.

Victoria was here to check up on her.

To see if Eleanor suspected anything.

To see if the photo was really missing.

To see if her carefully constructed life was still intact.

Eleanor smiled.

The mask was firmly in place.

---

"Can I get you anything?" Eleanor asked. "Tea? Coffee? Water?"

Victoria blinked. "Water would be nice."

Eleanor stood. Walked to the kitchen. Filled a glass. Walked back. Handed it to Victoria.

Victoria took it. Their fingers brushed.

Eleanor felt nothing.

She sat back down. Crossed her legs. Smiled.

"So, Victoria," she said. "How long have you known Julian?"

Victoria glanced at Julian. He shifted uncomfortably.

"We met at university," Victoria said carefully. "He was a student. I was his advisor."

"I see." Eleanor tilted her head. "And you've stayed in touch all these years?"

"We've remained friends."

"Friends." Eleanor nodded. "That's nice."

She looked at Julian. He was staring at the floor. Refusing to meet her eyes.

She looked back at Victoria.

"You know," Eleanor said, "I've always wondered about Julian's time at university. He doesn't talk about it much. You'll have to tell me more."

Victoria's smile tightened. "What would you like to know?"

"Everything."

---

The next hour was a masterclass in restraint.

Victoria talked. Eleanor listened. Julian fidgeted. Victoria laughed. Eleanor smiled. Julian drank. Victoria told stories about university. Eleanor asked questions. Julian interrupted. Victoria dismissed him. Eleanor pretended not to notice.

She watched them.

She watched the way Victoria touched Julian's arm. The way Julian leaned toward her. The way they shared looks. Private looks. Looks that said a thousand words. Looks that said everything.

She watched the way Victoria spoke to her. Condescending. Patient. Like Eleanor was a child who couldn't understand grown-up things.

She watched the way Julian looked at Victoria. Like she was the sun. Like she was the center of his universe.

She watched the way he never looked at her.

Not once.

Not the entire time.

---

At seven, Ethan came home from his after-school program.

He ran into the living room. Stopped when he saw Victoria.

"Who are you?" he asked.

Victoria smiled. A different smile. Softer. Warmer. Almost maternal.

"Hello, Ethan. I'm an old friend of your father's."

Ethan looked at Eleanor. Then at Julian. Then back at Victoria.

"You're in the picture," he said.

Victoria blinked. "What?"

"The picture. In Daddy's closet. You're the one holding the baby."

Eleanor's blood ran cold.

Victoria's face went white.

Julian dropped his glass.

---

The silence was deafening.

Ethan looked around. Confused. Scared. He didn't understand what he'd said. He didn't understand why everyone was looking at him like that.

"What?" he whispered. "What did I say?"

Eleanor stood. Crossed the room. Knelt in front of him.

"Nothing, baby. Nothing's wrong."

"But—"

"Go upstairs. Okay? Go to your room. I'll be up in a minute."

"But I—"

"Please, Ethan."

He looked at her. His eyes were wet. His lip was trembling.

"Okay," he whispered.

He turned. Walked up the stairs.

Eleanor waited until she heard his door close.

Then she turned.

Victoria and Julian were both standing. Victoria's face was pale. Julian's was red.

"What did he mean?" Victoria asked. Her voice was sharp. "What picture?"

Eleanor looked at her.

Then at Julian.

Then at Victoria.

"Would anyone like to explain?" she asked. "Or should I?"

She didn't know what to say.She knelt there, holding Ethan, the photo of Victoria and the newborn baby clutched in his small hand, and her mind went blank. Every lie she'd ever told. Every mask she'd ever worn. Every performance she'd perfected over six years. All of it vanished. She was just a woman. A woman holding a child who wasn't hers. A child who was looking at her with confused, trusting eyes."Mama?" Ethan's voice was small. "Who is she?"Eleanor's throat closed. She couldn't tell him the truth. Not now. Not like this. Not when he was eight years old and holding a photo of the woman who gave birth to him, the woman who abandoned him, the woman who let Eleanor raise him for eight years. She couldn't break him.So she did what she'd been doing for six years. She lied."She's an old friend of Daddy's," she said, her voice steadier than she felt. She didn't sleep that night. She lay in bed beside Julian, staring at the ceiling, her grandmother's words echoing in her mind. You are worth more than they told you. She didn't know what that meant yet. She didn't know what Daniel would tell her. But for the first time in days, she felt something other than pain. She felt anticipation. The morning came slowly. She made breakfast. She smiled at Ethan. She kissed Julian goodbye. She dropped Ethan at school. She watched him run through the gates. Then she drove to Daniel Hartley's office.---Daniel was waiting for her.He stood when she entered. Gestured to the chair across from his desk. She sat. He sat. He folded his hands. He looked at her with kind eyes and a steady gaze."Before we begin," he said, "I need you to understand something. What I'm about to tell you is going to change your life. Not just your circumstances. Your life. Are you ready for that?"Eleanor met his eyes. "I've been ready since the moment I walked out of that

  • UNMARRIED    Chapter Five :The Silence

She didn't confront him that night. She wanted to. God, she wanted to. She sat on the kitchen floor, her back against the cabinets, her hands over her mouth, her tears falling silently, and every part of her screamed to wake him. To drag him out of bed. To make him look her in the eye and explain how he could do this to her.She didn't move. She couldn't.Because if she confronted him, she would have to face the truth. All of it. The forged certificate. Victoria. Five years. Ethan. The barren lie. The surgery that never happened. Everything she had built her life on would collapse in a single moment, and she wasn't ready to stand in the rubble. Not yet.So she sat on the kitchen floor until her legs went numb. Until her tears dried. Until the cold from the tiles seeped into her bones and settled there like a second skin. Then she stood. She walked back to the bedroom. Julian was still asleep. His breath was slow. Steady. Content. He had no idea. No idea that she knew. No idea that the
