~Kaelen's POV~

The night had gone impossibly still.

I stood in my study with the silence pressing against my ears. Selene had stormed out hours ago, her heels clicking sharply against the marble floors, her parting words still ringing in my skull. I didn't care.

I couldn't bring myself to care about her tantrums, not when my whole world had crumbled the moment I'd spoken those terrible words at the ceremony.

I had watched the light die in Freya's eyes, watched her legs give way as she collapsed onto the ceremony platform.

Every instinct had screamed at me to go to her, to gather her in my arms and tell everyone this was a mistake. But the elders had been watching. The allied packs had been watching. Three hundred years of pack alliances had been balanced on my shoulders in that single moment.

And I had chosen wrong.

A sharp knock at the door broke through my spiraling thoughts. Before I could speak, the door burst open and Beta Rowan stumbled through, his face ashen, his uniform torn and stained with something dark.

"My Alpha," Rowan gasped, gripping the doorframe for support. "There's been an incident."

My heart dropped into my stomach. I knew that look. "The transport," I said quietly. "The convoy I arranged."

Rowan nodded slowly. "We were ambushed approximately two hours into the journey. Seven miles from Silver Creek pass. The lead vehicle exploded. There were gunfire, wolf attacks. Everyone aboard the transport vehicles is dead."

"Everyone?" My voice came out as a growl. "What about Freya? Where is Freya?"

Rowan's eyes flickered downward.

"We found the bodies of all seven soldiers assigned to her convoy. We found bullet casings, scorch marks from the explosion, and blood. Your sister's scent was at the scene. She was definitely there. But we haven't found her body yet."

The roar that tore from my throat was not human. My wolf slammed against my skin, clawing to get out. My desk went first, my arm sweeping everything off its surface. My chair followed, then a lamp, then the ornate vase that had been in my family for generations.

"HOW COULD YOU LET THIS HAPPEN?!" I screamed, spinning on Rowan, my eyes glowing dangerous gold. "You were supposed to protect her!"

"The ambush was set up by professionals, Alpha. Shadowbrook uniforms. They knew our routes, our schedules. Someone inside the pack provided information."

The words hit like a physical blow. Someone in my own pack had helped kill the woman I loved.

My chest heaved as I stared at the ruined room. For a long moment, I stood completely still, my breathing ragged, my fists clenched tight.

Then, slowly, the rage began to cool.

"No," I whispered. "She's not dead. I would know. I would feel it."

I pressed a hand to my chest, right over my heart, where the fated mate bond had lived for three long years. Sometimes it had burned bright with Freya's presence. Other times it had pulsed softly in rhythm with her heartbeat.

Now, through the devastation and grief, I reached for that bond.

And I felt nothing at first. Nothing but a hollow absence.

‘No,’ I thought desperately. ‘She's my mate. The bond can't just be gone.’

I reached deeper. And then... faint. So faint I almost missed it. A pulse. Weak. Unsteady. But undeniably there.

My eyes flew open.

"She's alive," I breathed. "The bond still holds. She has to be alive."

"I don't care what it could be." I was already moving, grabbing my jacket. "Send every available soldier. Search Silver Creek pass. Search the riverbanks. Search every single inch of that forest until you find her. And Rowan..."

I paused at the door.

"I want the people responsible for this ambush found. Bring them to me. Alive."

~Freya’s POV~

Water. Darkness. Cold so deep it burned.

I drifted in and out of consciousness. Sometimes I heard voices... male, rough. Sometimes I felt hands pressing down hard on my side, and white-hot agony would lance through my stomach. I tried to protect the small spark of life inside me, but my arms felt like lead.

'My baby,' I thought. 'Please, not my baby.'

Then the cold started to fade. The darkness softened. Machines beeped.

My eyes fluttered open. The ceiling was white and pristine. Fluorescent lights buzzed overhead. The smell of antiseptic hit my nose. I was in a bed with soft sheets, wires attached to my arms and chest, connected to monitors.

Heart monitor. I'm in a hospital.

The attempt to sit up brought exploding pain through my right side. My hand came away damp from the bandages around my midsection. The stab wound.

Memories flooded back; the convoy, the explosion, the gunfire, the soldiers in Shadowbrook uniforms. They had said Alpha Kaelen sent them. They had kicked me in the stomach while I curled to protect my child, then thrown me into the cold stream to drown.

"The hell do you think you're going?"

A young dark-haired nurse rushed over and pressed her hands against my shoulders.

"Don't strain yourself, honey. You just came out of surgery three hours ago. The baby's fine. You're both lucky to be alive."

I stopped fighting.

"The baby's fine," I repeated.

The door swung open and a man in a white coat entered.

"Miss Marlowe, I'm Doctor Aldric. You've been unconscious for nearly a day now. How are you feeling?"

"Like I got hit by a truck and then drowned."

"That sounds about right." He checked the machines. "Your injuries were extensive. Two broken ribs, a punctured lung that required surgery, severe hypothermia, and contusions. You should not have survived that night."

"But I did. How did I even get here?"

Footsteps sounded... heavy, measured, commanding. Then the man appeared in the doorway.

He was tall, with a powerful build, dark hair threaded with silver, and sharp green eyes. Power radiated from him.

"Alpha Zevren Ashmoor," the doctor said. "This is the patient I mentioned. Miss Freya Marlowe."

Zevren's gaze swept over me.

"When my hunting party found you in the stream last night, you were barely breathing. My gamma carried you back, and our healer stabilized you. We moved you here to Blackthorn Valley's main healing center."

"You saved me," I said. "Why?"

"Because no one deserves to die like that. And because whoever put you in that stream will answer for it."

The quiet fury in his voice made something twist in my chest.

"I was betrayed by someone I trusted. Someone I loved."

"I know who you are, Freya Marlowe. I know you were an omega in the Shadowbrook Pack, and I know Kaelen rejected you publicly and then arranged for your death."

The words hit me hard.

"He was going to marry Selene Mireaux for strong alliances. Everything I could never give him. I carried his child. Three years of love, of waiting, and in the end I was nothing. A mistake to be erased."

The heart monitor beeped faster. I pushed myself up on my elbows, ignoring the pain. Tears streamed down my face, but my eyes burned with intensity.

"He killed me," I said, voice shaking but certain. "He called me frail and worthless in front of everyone, then ordered my death. Our child would have died with me if not for you."

My hands clenched into fists.

"He wants me erased? Fine. I'll give him something to erase. I'm going to burn him to the ground. I'm going to tear his kingdom apart. I'm going to make him pay for every word, every promise, every lie."

I sank back onto the pillows, exhausted.

"My name is Freya Marlowe. And I am going to make Alpha Kaelen Draven regret the day he ever looked my way."

Silence filled the room.

Doctor Aldric cleared his throat. Alpha Zevren watched me, his green eyes gleaming with respect.

"Then you have a long recovery ahead of you," Zevren said quietly. "And friends who will stand beside you."

He stood and moved toward the door, then paused.

"Rest now, Freya Marlowe. The fire in your eyes tells me you're going to need it…”

Freya's POVMy legs moved mechanically, one stumbling step after another while two uniformed soldiers flanked me on either side.Tears streamed down my cheeks, dripping off my chin and splattering against the simple blue dress I had worn for the festival. The same dress Kaelen had called beautiful just hours ago. What a joke.My stomach turned at the memory of his lips on mine, warm and sure, whispering promises that meant nothing. I had believed every word. I had been such a fool.A guard jerked my arm hard enough to make me stumble."Watch where you're going," he growled.I blinked, suddenly aware that I had drifted toward the trees. The path we walked on was narrow, bordered by dense forest on both sides. I hadn't even noticed. My mind had been so lost in replaying the nightmare of the ceremony that everything else had faded away."Where are you taking me?" My voice came out scratchy and weak.Neither guard answered. They just kept walking grimly."Please." I tried to pull free bu

  • UNTIL THE LAST ALPHA BEGS    CHAPTER 2: The Cost of Crowns

Kaelen's POVThe sounds of celebration still echoed through the pack grounds as I guided Selene toward my quarters. Her arm was wrapped around mine, her smile bright and victorious. I kept my expression neutral... the mask I'd worn all evening... but inside, something was clawing at my chest."So this is where you live," Selene said with her eyes sweeping over the stone walls of my private wing. "It's a bit gloomy don't you think? I thought alphas liked grand spaces."I grunted.. I wasn't in the mood for interior design critiques."Tell you what," she continued, her fingers lightly tracing patterns on my sleeve. "I'll bring in some new curtains.. maybe some candles. Make it feel more like home."Her chatter filled my ears like white noise. I barely registered her words... my mind kept drifting back to the clearing... back to Freya's face when I said those terrible things.God! I might as well have driven a blade through her heart."... and the master bath is lovely but the stone work

  • UNTIL THE LAST ALPHA BEGS    CHAPTER 1: Promises

Freya's POVTonight was the night.I could barely contain myself as I stood before the cracked mirror in my small quarters, twisting this way and that to examine the simple blue dress I'd pulled out from the bottom of my chest. It wasn't much to look at...well-worn and mended at the hem more times than I could count...but it was the nicest thing I owned. My fingers trembled slightly as I smoothed down the fabric over my stomach which felt unusually tight today. Probably just nerves, I told myself. Anyone would be anxious if they were about to be claimed by the most powerful alpha in Shadowbrook. My wolf whuffed softly inside me, her excitement mirroring my own. Kaelen was finally going to make it official. No more pretending we were just friends who happened to share meaningful looks across the clearing. Tonight, in front of the entire pack, he would declare me as his mate and his luna.I caught my reflection and allowed myself a small smile. My hazel eyes sparkled back at me and for
