Chapter 3

Author: Plums
The next day, I drove the car James had given me to Silvermont College. Before heading out, I asked Sam Smith, the butler, for the gas card.

"The car already has a full tank, Ms. Josephine."

"It'll run out eventually."

My family had prepared flowers, a haute couture gown, and media interviews for Juliet. The moment she stepped out of the car, she was swarmed by the crowd.

I, on the other hand, was reminded by the driver to get off at the side entrance. "Mr. Moreau said it would be best if you didn't appear on camera with Ms. Juliet."

I got it. He thought I was ugly and was afraid I would ruin the Moreaus' image.

Not that I care. If anything, the side entrance was closer to the scholarship office.

I had just entered the academic building when Juliet caught up with me and linked her arm through mine. "Why did you come in through the side entrance, Josephine?"

Before I could answer, she explained to our classmates, "Josephine is just a little self-conscious about her looks. She doesn't like being stared at."

The way people looked at me changed in an instant.

"How ugly does someone have to be to wear a hat and mask in the dead of summer?"

"No wonder she was sent to the countryside right after she was born."

Juliet had a glint in her eyes, but she still pretended to defend me. "Cut it out, guys. Josephine's really good at studying."

Someone immediately chimed in, "She probably has no friends, so all she can do is bury herself in exercise books every day."

I ignored them and headed straight to the scholarship office.

The staff member checked my ID and handed me the confirmation form. "The 600,000-dollar scholarship will be deposited into your account within three business days, Josephine."

"Is that after taxes?"

"Yes." My hand felt noticeably lighter as I signed my name.

I had just put the documents away when several students blocked my path. One of their phones displayed a post from the campus forum titled, "Country Bumpkin Heiress Suspected of Impersonating Provincial Top Score to Get into Silvermont College Through the Moreaus' Connections."

The post claimed that I had stolen scholarships and lab positions from ordinary students.

"You don't even dare to remove your mask! How do we know you're the real Josephine?"

"Isn't it easy for rich people to forge documents?"

The controversy soon reached the faculty professors. To quell the rising doubts, the professor arranged an open test on short notice.

Juliet sat in the front row with a look of concern. "Don't feel pressured, Josephine. Even if you don't do well, no one'll laugh at you."

The final three questions on the test were all beyond the level of a freshman. I handed in my paper 40 minutes early.

The professor graded it on the spot. "A perfect score. She even used two different methods to solve the final problem."

Those who had questioned me instantly fell silent.

The professor immediately announced, "Josephine, report to the key laboratory once the semester commences."

"Do I get a stipend?"

The professor smiled. "Yes, you'll receive the highest stipend available."

Since our classmates could no longer attack my grades, they could only target my face.

"So what if her grades are good? She's still too ugly to show her face in public."

"I told you; she has no friends, so all she can do is bury her head in books."

Juliet gently comforted me. "Cheer up, Josephine. There's more to a lady than just her looks."

She made it sound like she was defending me, but all she did was affirm that I was ugly.

…

That afternoon, Jack came to campus for an esports club event. When Juliet showed him the forum post, he was in the middle of a livestream.

Jack deliberately turned the camera toward me. "She won't take off her mask, not because she's insecure about her looks, but because she's afraid people will have nightmares after seeing her face."

The students around us immediately burst into laughter. The livestream chat was flooded with comments demanding that I take off my mask.

Juliet hurriedly tried to stop him. "That's enough, Jack. Josephine's sensitive about her appearance to begin with. If you provoke her any further, she might not even dare to leave her dorm."

Jack, however, kept following me with his camera.

I stopped in my tracks. "Do I get a cut of your livestream revenue?"

"You want a cut of my livestream revenue, too?"

"Since you're using me for clout, of course I should get a cut." I pulled up the platform's complaint page. "If you won't pay me, stop violating my image rights."

In no time, the livestream went black.

Campus security arrived shortly afterward and ordered Jack to stop filming.

His expression hardened because he felt humiliated in public. "Did you just report your own brother for this little bit of money?"

"First of all, you've never acknowledged me as your sister. Secondly, I don't suffer losses for free."

That evening, "The Moreaus' Ugly Heiress Acts All High and Mighty After Topping the College Entrance Exam in Her Province" shot to the top of the trending list.

James called me soon afterward. He didn't ask me what had happened. Instead, he ordered, "You must attend the charity gala tomorrow night and apologize to Jack in public."

He paused for a moment before adding, "Keep your mask on tight. Don't embarrass our family any further."

It didn't take long to expose Juliet's fabricated cosmetic surgery records. The surveillance footage from the gala, the livestream replay, and the payment records from the marketing accounts all became evidence against her. The Moreaus revoked her spot at the art exhibition. James canceled all her credit cards and ordered her to move out of the Moreau residence. On the day she left, Juliet cried as she held on to Julian. "I've been by your side for 18 years, Julian. Can Josephine really take everything away from me just because of her face?" Julian slowly pushed her away. "She didn't steal anything. We're the ones who owe her." Juliet threw herself at Jack next. "Jack, you said I was your one and only sister!"Jack looked down at the wristband on his wrist. "My real sister heard that, too. She was standing just outside the camera's frame." Juliet turned to James as a last resort. He simply handed her a lawyer's letter. "You deliberately assaulted Josephine and spread lies on

After the press conference ended, the Moreaus gathered backstage and cornered me. James placed a document in front of me. "10% of Moreau Group's shares, as well as a house downtown. It's all yours the second you sign here."I flipped through a couple of pages. "What about emotional distress damages?" His expression stiffened. "This is what I owe you.""I don't want these." I pushed the document back toward him. "Calculate my tuition, living expenses, my share of the livestream revenue, and compensation for the injuries I sustained at the gala according to the bills. I don't need anything else." James pinned the document down. The veins on the back of his hand bulged. "Didn't you spend your whole childhood wishing to come home?""I did when I was little." I looked up at him. "I don't anymore." Julian stood a short distance away, clutching his camera. His lens remained pointed at the floor. "Will you let me take a photo of you?""No.""Even just from behind is fine.""No ca

Three days later, Silvermont College held a press conference to announce its research projects. As soon as I arrived backstage, a trending topic popped up on my phone. "The Moreau Family's Ugly Heiress Gets Plastic Surgery to Impersonate the Pear Blossom Beauty."The post included several supposed records of my plastic surgery. It listed the hospital, dates, and procedures in meticulous detail. The comment section was flooded with insults. "No wonder she always wears a mask. She's recovering from surgery.""She got plastic surgery to look like the girl her brothers adore. How disgusting!" Professor Cross slammed his fist on the table. "Nonsense! You looked like this when you competed at 15. Hundreds of people at the research camp saw you." I put my phone away. "Don't worry. Since she's set the stage, we might as well let her finish her performance." After the press conference began, I took the stage to present my project. As soon as I finished my proposal, an investment f

Tears welled up in his eyes as Julian stared at the restored photograph. The girl in the picture stood sideways beneath the pear blossom tree. She was the person he'd spent five years searching for. She was also his biological younger sister and the one he'd ordered the staff to kick out a short while ago. Juliet abruptly lunged at the cardboard box. "Stop looking at them!"She grabbed a letter labeled "15 years old" and bolted toward the fireplace. James seized her wrist. "How do you know this letter can't be read?" Juliet went rigid. The envelope slipped from her hand and fell to the floor. A single photo slid out. The me in the photo was holding a competition trophy, smiling bashfully. My handwriting was on the back. "Julian said only attractive people deserve to stand in front of the camera. I should be a little prettier now. Could you take a family portrait for me?" Julian's shoulders trembled violently. He crouched down to pick up the photograph, but his hand froze i

After hanging up the phone, Grandma sent them a file. It contained shipping receipts from the last several years, dating all the way back to when I was five, up until last year. The recipient's address was always the Moreau residence. The remark column clearly stated, "Personal letter. Please deliver to the three scions of the Moreau family." The people who had signed for the packages included the housekeepers, Sam, and Juliet. Jack snatched his phone and scrolled frantically through the file. By the time he reached the last page, his face had gone ghastly pale. "Where are these letters?" Cold sweat beaded on Sam's forehead. "Mrs. Moreau Senior did send things over quite often. Ms. Juliet said they were just local specialties from the countryside and there was no need to bother you with them. So they were put into the storage room."Juliet jerked her head up. "I never said that!" Tears clung to her lashes, and her voice trembled. "James, you can't suspect me just because of a f

Julian was the first person who snapped back to reality. He shoved aside the chairs blocking his way and practically lunged toward the edge of the stage. "Hold still, Josephine!" His voice was strained. I raised my hand, and I was just about to brush away the damp strands plastered across my face when the lights overhead suddenly flickered twice. With a sudden pop, the banquet hall plunged into darkness. The champagne had seeped into the stage wiring, and the acrid smell of something burning drifted through the air. The guests screamed and stumbled backward. "Did the power go out?" "Did anyone get a good look at her earlier?" "Her eyes look just like the girl beneath the pear blossom tree!"Beams of light from cell phones began piercing the dark. Before I could even regain my footing, a heavy tablecloth suddenly dropped over my head. Juliet clutched my shoulders, her fingernails digging into my skin through my soaked clothes. "Fear not, Josephine. No one got a clear lo
