Chapter 2

Author: Piggleston
When I drifted back home, I found the couch piled high with shopping bags. Bridget was trying on her new clothes.

Dad smiled at her fondly. "You look beautiful."

Mom nodded in satisfaction. "Bridget has flawless skin. She looks good in everything."

Floating nearby, I suddenly felt a little envious.

Bridget had inherited all of our parents' best features. She had fair skin, was tall for her age, and got excellent grades. I, on the other hand, was tan, short, and did only average in school.

We had the same parents, yet we looked nothing alike.

Mom straightened Bridget's collar, then sighed. "Unlike Sophie, who still looks terrible no matter how expensive her clothes are."

Dad simply chuckled. "She's still young. She'll grow into her looks."

Mom pursed her lips. "She's not that young. How much more can she still change? Sometimes I really wonder if she's even our biological daughter."

A sharp pain stabbed through my chest.

Back in fourth grade, my final exam scores dropped me out of the class's top ten. Mom had flung my report card at my face.

"How could you get questions like these wrong? How can you be so dumb? I seriously wonder if the hospital switched you with someone else when you were born!"

That very afternoon, she dragged Dad and me to get a paternity test. I was terrified when they drew my blood, but deep down, I felt hopeful.

I thought that if the test proved I was really their daughter, maybe Mom would finally stop picking on me. The report came out three days later—I was, indeed, their biological daughter.

Overjoyed, I threw my arms around them. "Mom, Dad, I really am your daughter!"

She stared at the report in a daze, while Dad lowered his head and lit a cigarette. After a long silence, she said with undeniable disappointment, "Just my luck. She really is ours."

On the way home, they walked so fast that I struggled to keep up. Neither of them held my hand.

That was when I finally understood. To them, the fact that I was their daughter was something to be ashamed of. Hearing Mom say those words again still sent a sharp pang into my chest.

I was dead, Mom. You would never have to stand beside me and feel embarrassed again.

After that, Mom went into the kitchen to make dinner. Before long, the mouthwatering aroma of garlic shrimp filled the living room. It was my favorite dish, and Bridget's too.

But Mom always said that as the older sister, I had to wait until Bridget had eaten her fill before I could touch anything. Nine out of ten times, there was nothing left by then.

At the dinner table, Dad glanced at the door. "Should we save some food for Sophie?"

Mom snorted. "For what? Let her starve. Maybe then she'll learn her lesson."

Despite saying that, she still filled a plate with some of the dishes. Then, after a pause, she picked up a whole shrimp and placed it on the plate.

I froze. It was the first time Mom had ever set aside a shrimp for me without being asked.

"Forget it. She cried so much today. I almost feel sorry for her," she said. "She's been punished enough. Once she comes home, she can sit with us and eat. I'll take her to the doctor's for an eye exam tomorrow."

I crouched beside the table, tears silently dripping onto the floor. I had never once been allowed to eat a whole shrimp. I reached out to pick it up, but my fingers passed right through it.

Time ticked by, minute by minute. Even by 11:00 pm, there was still no sign of me.

Mom's expression darkened with every second. Dad frowned. "Why hasn't she come home yet? It's so late. What if something happened to her? Maybe I should look for her."

My eyes reddened as I turned to Dad. "Dad, you finally remembered me! I'm in the ditch… I'm about to—"

Before I could finish, Mom sprang to her feet and picked up the dinner plate. With a sharp flick of her hand, she dumped the food into the trash.

"I knew she'd take my kindness for granted! From now on, I won't lift a finger to help her, even if she gets on her knees and begs!"

Three days later, Mom and Dad held a funeral for me.My teachers, classmates, neighbors, and a whole crowd of relatives I barely knew all came to pay their respects. They brought me all kinds of gifts—hair clips, fountain pens, storybooks, and even a matching skirt suit I had only ever dared to admire through a store window. At the very back of the funeral hall sat 14 beautifully wrapped gift boxes.Curious, I floated over to take a close look. The labels read, "Sophie's 1st Birthday Gift", "Sophie's 2nd Birthday Gift", and so on until the 14th one.Mom and Dad had finally made up for all the birthday presents I had missed out on over the years. There was also a huge cake beside the gifts."May Sophie Sink rest in peace."I couldn't help but give a bitter smile. It turned out that I could have a cake even when it wasn't my birthday. Alas, I would never get to taste it.Soon, I saw Mom and Dad. In just a few short days, they looked a decade older.Dad's chin was covered in stub

"Impossible!"Mom rushed forward and snatched the report out of the forensic pathologist's hands. Her face tense, she scanned the report line by line, as if she could find a typo that would prove it was all a mistake.Of course, everything was written in ink.Her hands shook violently. "No, this must've been a mistake. How could her eyesight have been that bad?"Dad grabbed the report and read it thoroughly. No matter how many times he read it, the results remained the same.Captain Cooper looked at them and snorted coldly. "Her preion was over minus ten diopters in both eyes. In other words, without glasses, she could barely see a thing. She might as well have been blind."Mom's legs gave way. She collapsed to the floor. Dad clutched the report, his whole body trembling.Captain Cooper wasn't finished. "You took her to an optical store, yet you only bought your younger daughter a pair of designer sunglasses while refusing to get the deceased even the cheapest preion lenses!"M

Mom and Dad froze. "Her vision?"She reacted as if those two words had struck her. She jerked her head up. "There was nothing wrong with her eyes!"She spoke so quickly that her voice rose to a shrill pitch. "She just didn't want to study, so she made up a lie that she was nearsighted! No one in our family is nearsighted!"My husband and I both have excellent eyesight, and so does her little sister. Why is she the only one with a problem?"Captain Cooper looked at her but didn't argue right away. Instead, he rewound the surveillance footage. On the screen, I was wearing only one shoe, feeling around on the ground for a long time. My missing shoe was clearly lying just a short distance away, but I never managed to touch it, not even once.He paused the footage again, his expression grave. "Are you absolutely sure that there was nothing wrong with her vision?"Mom's lips moved, but she couldn't say anything.Captain Cooper kept staring at her. "And losing her shoe wasn't the only

Mom froze for a moment. Then, as if enraged by the driver's words, she lunged at him again."You're lying! What do you mean she walked into the road? I'm sure she was perfectly fine on the sidewalk! Why would she suddenly wander into traffic for no reason? Don't try to fool me with your lies!"The driver's face was deathly pale, his lips trembling. When Mom tried to hit him again, Captain Cooper grabbed her and held her back. "Ma'am, calm down."She thrashed desperately, her voice shrill. "He killed my daughter, and now he's trying to blame her! She was so timid! Even as a kid, she wouldn't cross the street unless someone was with her! How could she have walked into traffic by herself?"At those words, tears welled up in my eyes. So, she did remember. She remembered how timid I was, how afraid I was to cross the road alone, but she had no idea that I hadn't been able to see clearly for a long time.Captain Cooper's expression darkened. He ordered the others to separate them."Ac

The body beneath the white sheet was mine.I had been lying in that filthy ditch overnight. My face had bloated beyond recognition, and my body reeked of decay. My clothes were torn to shreds, and strands of hair clung to my face.Seeing myself like that, I panicked. Instinctively, I rushed forward and threw myself between Mom and the gurney. "Mom, don't look! I'm so ugly and filthy now! You're going to scold me again, aren't you?"You'll say I don't take care of my clothes, that I lost my shoe and even tore all my clothes. I'm sorry, Mom. I embarrassed you again…"But she couldn't see me. She walked straight through my body and took two steps forward.Clearly, she recognized my clothes, too. Her eyes were fixed on the body lying on the gurney. Slowly, her face became pale. "No… This can't be Sophie…"Dad stood frozen as well. He was still clutching my sneaker. Now his fingers loosened, and the shoe dropped to the floor with a thud."No… This can't be happening… She was fine jus

Mom looked confused, then frowned and asked, "What do you mean, the deceased?"She looked the two officers up and down before letting out a cold laugh."Are you two even real police officers? Wow. Have scammers really gotten this desperate? You throw on a uniform and think you can go around scamming people?"The officers paused, then took out their badges and held them up for her to see.Dad took one and carefully checked the photo and badge number. He then glanced at the patrol car parked nearby. His expression finally turned serious. "Officer, what exactly happened?"The officer put his badge away. "Someone just found the body of a teen girl in a drainage ditch up ahead. The only item that could help identify her was this broken transit card. We're working to confirm her identity."At that, Mom finally looked at the clear evidence pouch. The transit card, snapped in half, had my name printed in one corner. Her eyes widened.Of course, she recognized that card. She was the one
