Chapter 2

Author: No Meat Today
The exquisite feather brooch rested quietly in Jack's palm.

The man on the couch trembled, and his eyes instantly turned red.

"This... This brooch! I had a craftsman custom-make it as a birthday gift for my sister years ago!"

In the living room, the man, who was as cold as ice up to that point, had tears in his eyes like a child.

My fingernails dug deep into my palms, and my mind went blank.

That feather brooch's design was a doodle I made when I was five and was the only old possession I had.

Before Steve went on his overseas trip, I personally gave it to him, hoping it would be his good-luck charm.

Now, it had become the evidence Alice used to impersonate me.

I gritted my teeth and abruptly pushed the door open, ready to rush out.

But suddenly, the child's voice yelled sharply in my mind, "Mom, behind you!"

I turned around in a panic, but before I could see clearly, a sharp pain shot through the back of my neck, and I lost consciousness.

When I woke up again, I found my hands and feet bound, and my mouth stuffed with a rag that reeked of engine oil.

"Steve, didn't I tell you not to hurt Wendy?! She's pregnant!"

It was Alice's voice, tinged with displeasure.

"It's her fault for peeking through the door crack. What if Lucas saw her?"

I could tell from the voice of Steve – no, it should be Jack now – that he was suppressing his anger.

"Enough. Keep an eye on her for the next few days. We'll deal with her once everything settles down. Lucas Shaw is obsessed with the brooch. We can't afford to make any mistakes..."

His voice faded further and further away.

My head was splitting. I struggled to sit up, and just as I was about to call for help, I fainted again.

I had no idea how long I was out for. I was woken up by the sound of an argument from the next room.

"...When did you get a vasectomy? Why didn't you tell me? Are we not going to have any children? Shouldn't you be even happier with me?"

From next door, Steve's deep, cold voice drifted over, "Alice, having you is enough for me. I don't want any trace of her left in our lives. As for the babies, I'll find a way to get rid of them. You just need to be Miss Shaw."

It turned out he had everything planned out.

Not only did he want Alice to steal my identity, he also regarded our babies as mere trash!

I felt cold, like I'd fallen into an ice cellar. I recalled the child's words earlier.

One of my children would get his legs broken, the other would starve to death.

The thought of that made my blood rush to my head!

I gritted my teeth, protected my belly, and with all my strength, slammed my wrist hard against the sharp corner of the bedside table.

Bang! Crack!

The excruciating pain of dislocated bone shot through me.

I convulsed with pain, and my vision blurred repeatedly.

I bit down hard, not letting out a single sound. Enduring the intense pain, I freed my hands from the ropes.

Without a moment's rest, I immediately untied the ropes on my feet and pulled out the rag from my mouth.

I rushed out of the room and stumbled out of the apartment.

The streets were deserted at night, and I desperately ran toward the city center.

I had no idea how long I ran. After a while, a black Bentley suddenly pulled up beside me.

The car window rolled down, revealing a cold yet familiar face.

Tears welled up in my eyes, and the tip of my nose tingled.

With my last ounce of strength, I called out, "Big brother..."

"Big brother? Miss, I think you're mistaking me for someone else. Are you alright? Would you like me to take you to the hospital?"

The man got out of the car and quickly walked over to support me.

I stared at him. That face, which bore a slight resemblance to mine, filled me with a strong sense of familiarity and warmth.

"How does Mommy know he's her brother?! Did Mommy also get reborn? I need to tell Mommy that Uncle Lucas is going to take that fake woman back to the Shaw family mansion tonight! After today, she'll never get to reunite with her family again!"

Hearing this, Steve ignored the pain of his broken hand and burst into curses, "Alice, you stupid wench! You're the one who seduced me and instigated me to do this because you wanted to be rich!"Watching their ugly squabble, I felt nothing but disgust.Steve suddenly turned to me, his eyes filled with frantic hatred."Don't think you've won, Wendy! So what if you've returned to the Shaw family? The children in your belly are my seed! They'll always carry my blood! If you send their father to prison, people will point and laugh at them their entire lives!"He thought the children were my biggest weakness.Unfortunately, he was wrong.I looked at him indifferently, throwing the words I overheard him say back at him."Didn't you say that all you needed was Alice, and you didn't want any trace of me left in your life? Didn't you also say you'd find a way to get rid of the children? But now, you're using the children as your shield?"With every word I spoke, his face grew a shade p

"Lucas, have you found her?""Grandma, the situation is a bit complicated."Lucas gave her a brief explaination.Grandma's gaze slowly swept over us, finally settling on Alice."Are you the girl with the feather brooch?"Alice timidly hid behind Steve and nodded.Grandma then looked at me, her gaze sharpening slightly."And who are you?""Grandma, I'm Denise." I stepped forward and knelt before her.The prayer beads in Grandma's hand stopped. She scrutinized me for a long time before slowly speaking."When Denise was little, she was really afraid of the old black locust tree in the backyard. Tell me, why was that?"Steve and Alice's expressions changed when they heard the question. How could they possibly know such things?Alice stammered for a while before tentatively saying, "Is it... because there were bugs on the tree?"Grandma said nothing, merely shaking her head.Steve quickly added, "Is it because it looked like a ghost at night? Kids are scared of that."Grand

He stared at me in disbelief, shock practically overflowing from his eyes.Steve's face instantly turned ashen. He grabbed my wrist and barked, "Wendy, what nonsense are you spouting now?! Did you eavesdrop on us?!"Alice was also panicking. She clutched Lucas' sleeve tightly, crying, "Lucas, don't believe her! She's just jealous of me, so she wants to snatch everything from me! She's crazy!"I coldly shook off Steve's hand.Crazy?Yeah, the old me was indeed crazy. I let myself be deceived and manipulated by Steve.I ignored them, turned to my brother, and continued confidently, "My name's not Wendy. My name is Denise Shaw. Twenty years ago, on the day our house caught fire, you got hit by a falling beam when you tried to save me. It left a crescent-shaped burn scar on your lower back. Do you need me to point out where it is?"Lucas let go of Alice and took a step back. His eyes turned bloodshot and his mouth trembled, unable to utter a single word. That scar was the greatest

A flicker of panic crossed Steve's eyes, but he quickly recovered. He pointed at me and roared, "See, Mr. Shaw? I told you she's crazy! She's spouting nonsense. She must be having a delusional episode again. We'll take her home right away. After the babies are born, we'll send her to a mental hospital for proper treatment."As Steve spoke, he reached out to grab my arm, trying to forcefully drag me away. But Lucas suddenly intervened."What did you just say?"His sharp gaze fell on me, and he grabbed my wrist."You said you're allergic to mangoes? And you have a scar on your wrist?"He was about to roll up my sleeve when Alice suddenly burst into tears."You don't believe me, Lucas? I'm your sister! That brooch is mine! Wendy is mentally ill! How could you believe her and not me?!"Her crying was accompanied by accusations.Tears streamed down her face like pearls."Since you don't believe me, then just acknowledge her as your sister! I don't want you as a brother anymore! I

In my mind, the child's thoughts were filled with extreme anxiety.I soothingly patted my belly.Suddenly, a sharp, twisting pain shot through my lower abdomen."Sorry, Mommy, please bear with the pain for now. I'll protect my brother. Don't be scared, it's just temporary."The child's voice, full of guilt, made my heart clench."Miss, you look really pale. Are you alright?"My brother supported my arm, his voice filled with concern. The pain made my vision swim, and my fingers gripped his suit jacket tightly."Please... could you take me to the hospital?"We sped to the hospital, and I was examined. My brother walked in with the examination report and sat down on the chair by my bed."The doctor said it was just uterine contractions, nothing serious. Should I contact your family? If you're in any trouble, you can tell me. My name is Lucas Shaw. You can trust me."As he spoke, he swiped open his phone screen, and his gaze softened. On the screen was a design sketch of a fe
