Harper zipped the suitcase and sat on the lid to force it shut. It was barely eleven, and she'd already done more this morning than in the last three months. The suitcase waited by the bedroom door. Two garbage bags sat in the hall, one bound for the curb, the other for Melrose. The house was so quiet she could hear the fridge humming downstairs.

She'd expected to feel sad. Mostly, she wanted coffee.

Her phone buzzed with a text from Valentina. "Lunch. Noon. Maison Rose. We're talking Keaton, Myles, and Austin, in that order, and you're not allowed to say no."

Harper thumbed back, "Do I get a say in anything?"

The reply came in seconds. "You get a say in dessert."

Harper laughed out loud in the empty bedroom. She didn't change out of her jeans and white tee, and she didn't check the mirror twice. She grabbed her keys and drove out through the gates.

Maison Rose hid behind an ivy-covered wall off Canon Drive, a little French bistro that lived up to its name. Roses were everywhere. Climbing roses, pale pink and apricot, crawled up the brick and spilled over the trellises. Deep red hybrid teas lined the garden path in tidy beds. Lavender and cream blooms crowded silver vases on every marble table, and one corner held a whole wall of tiny white climbers, so thick they looked like snow. The air smelled like petals, espresso, and warm bread. It was the kind of place where Beverly Hills wives closed million-dollar deals over twelve-dollar croissants.

Valentina had the best table, of course, in sunglasses the size of saucers and a red silk blouse with one button too few done up. She lowered the glasses and grinned.

"There she is. The runaway bride."

"I was never a bride."

"Even better. Sit. I already ordered for you." She slid a Cobb salad across the marble. "Now. Keaton. Has he texted?"

"Last night."

"And?"

"He wants to set up the doctors in Austin. He asked when I'd get in so he could arrange everything."

"And?" Valentina leaned in, eyes sparkling. "Don't make me pull this out of you one word at a time, Harper. I will. I've done it to grown actors."

Harper stabbed a piece of chicken. "He sent a thumbs-up."

Valentina sat back slowly. "A thumbs-up."

"And 'see you there.'"

"The man owns half the hotels in America. He flies surgeons across oceans before breakfast. And he sent you a thumbs-up." She pressed a hand to her chest. "I've never been prouder of anyone in my life. That's a man trying very hard not to scare you off."

"Or a man who's bad at texting."

"Babe. Those are the same man."

Harper grinned and filled her in on the rest: Myles stumbling in at 10:45, the canned soup, the locked guest room, the two garbage bags, the old USA jacket folded at the bottom of her suitcase. Valentina listened with her chin in her hand, her eyes getting brighter with every detail. When Harper got to "same as you'd do for a toddler," she nearly choked on her water.

"So how do you feel?" she asked when Harper finished.

"Light."

"Good light or scary light?"

Harper turned her glass in slow circles on the marble. "Both. Like I just left the platform and haven't hit the water yet."

"That's the right answer." Valentina lifted her glass. "One more night in LA, then Austin. Then what?"

"Then I learn to dive again."

"To the phoenix."

"Val. That's so cheesy."

"Clink the glass, Harper."

She did. For one perfect moment, the sun was warm, the roses smelled sweet, and everything felt possible.

Then she heard the laughter.

They left the car in a garage off Guadalupe Street and walked the rest of the way.The campus hadn't changed. Same pale limestone, same red-tile roofs, same squirrels so fat and fearless they practically charged rent. The Tower rose over the oaks with its clock face catching the afternoon sun, and students streamed past on bikes and scooters, earbuds in, backpacks bouncing, sunburned and completely unbothered by anything.Harper used to be one of them. She'd crossed this exact plaza a thousand times with a gym bag over her shoulder and chlorine in her hair, always late for something, always starving. Back then, the biggest problem in her life had been a stubborn back two-and-a-half that kept coming up short. It took a few minutes to notice the looks.A cluster of guys outside the student union went quiet as she passed. One elbowed ano

The Austin heat found Harper the second the terminal doors slid open.It wrapped around her like a towel straight out of the dryer, heavy and warm and smelling faintly of cut grass, hot asphalt, and somebody's barbecue pit miles away. She stopped short on the curb. A man rolling a golf bag nearly clipped her heels."Sorry," she said, and didn't move.Valentina pushed her sunglasses down her nose. "Are you smelling the air?""Shut up. Yes.""Babe, that's a shuttle bus.""It's a Texas shuttle bus."Valentina snorted and waved down the rental car van. While they waited, she scrolled through her phone, the only one of them still connected to the world."Okay. Updates. The video's at four million. Chloe's dentist apparently has a waitlist now. And Keaton booked us a suite."Harper turned. "He what?""At his hotel downtown. The Ashford. Top floor." Valentina held up the screen: a short, polite text, not a single emoji. "I didn't say yes.""Good.""I also didn't say no.""Val.""It has a roo

Beside him, Serena was still going, a bright, bubbly stream of strangers' names and other people's drama. Somewhere around Gorman, Myles stopped hearing it altogether. His mind had already drifted back to the woman who used to ride in that seat.Harper had been quiet. Not dull. Easy. When she did talk, she actually said something. She'd point out a hawk circling over the freeway, or tell him the road they were on used to be a stagecoach route, or repeat something funny her mom used to say at the diner. Somehow it always made the drive go faster. And she'd known when to stop talking. If he came home wrecked, she didn't pepper him with questions. She just made soup. Put on the playlist he liked. Reached over at red lights and squeezed his hand without a word. He'd never noticed how considerate she was. You didn't notice oxygen until it was gone."M

The Rolls-Royce rolled north on the 5 with the windows up and the air conditioning set to sixty-eight, exactly how Myles liked it. Up ahead, the Grapevine climbed into brown hills. Behind him, LA shrank in the mirror. It was Saturday. His grandfather's ninety-second birthday weekend. Every Crawford who mattered would be at the compound by nightfall, and tonight Myles would walk the woman he'd chosen into the old house and watch the whole family fall for her.Everything was going according to plan.Almost everything."Babe, can you not take the curves like that?" Serena flipped down the visor mirror and dabbed concealer over the faint pink mark on her cheek. "I'm trying to fix my face. Literally. Because of that psycho's friend.""It's barely visible.""It's visible to me."Myles glanced at her and sighed through his nose. He'd told her to dress conservatively. Twice. Once over breakfast at the hotel, and again in the elevator. "My grandfather's old-school. Modest. Classy. Think cardig

The TSA agent at LAX looked at Harper's ID, then at her face, then at her ID again."Huh," he said, and waved her through. She didn't ask. She had a feeling she'd find out. She'd slept maybe four hours at the hotel. Twice she'd jolted awake around two a.m., listening for the front door, for uneven footsteps, for someone shouting that he was starving. Both times there was only the hum of the minibar. Both times she lay back down and, for the first time in years, didn't get up for anyone. Her bank app had greeted her this morning with a number she had to read twice. Her friend on Melrose had worked fast: the Birkin, the Chanel, the pearls, the bracelet, all of it gone by nine p.m. and turned into a wire transfer. The ring went last. Harper watched it disappear into a velvet tray and waited to feel something.Nothing came. She thanked the clerk who boxed it up, and that was that. The other bag had gone into the dumpster behind the hotel. The Florence lovers hit the bottom with a crunch t

Chapter 13: Five Minutes"Myles." Serena's voice cracked on the name, thick with tears, the wounded princess right on cue. "Baby, I need you. Some psycho just attacked me. I'm at Maison Rose. Please, please hurry."She hung up and rounded on Harper, chest heaving, her cheek still glowing red. "You're going to regret this.""Probably not," Harper said.Valentina perched on the edge of the table and crossed her legs. "Make yourself comfortable. We'll wait."So they waited.Harper sipped her sparkling water. Chloe whimpered into a napkin. Madison and Tatum hovered like bridesmaids at a funeral, glancing from the phones still pointed their way to the terrace entrance and back again.Five minutes. Harper counted. Then a black Rolls-Royce slid up to the curb outside the ivy wall, long and sleek as a yacht, and Myles Crawford stepped out in a charcoal suit. His jaw was tight. His eyes were blazing. He came through the rose arch like a man walking onto a stage.Harper waited for her stomach t
