Dante

I stepped out of the room and decided to leave it unlocked. It is not like she could go anywhere. She wouldn’t make it past the hallway let alone the property. I gave a slight nod toward Carlos who stood right outside her door before heading to my office.

The pickup was supposed to be a simple grab and ditch operation, but those two idiots somehow messed it up. Victor ended up with a broken nose and she came in with scraped knees and tears in her sweater.

They are lucky I have other things to worry about or I would have blown their kneecaps off for putting a mark on her.

This entire Aria situation felt like nothing but a distraction and a complete waste of my time. I did not know who she was or why she mattered but the Don’s last order… His dying wish was to find her and protect her.

Protect her from what? None of it made sense. I have no idea. From her file she did not seem to be in any danger. She was a quiet librarian with a dead-end routine and no ties to any crime family. So why would she be important?

Nothing about her screamed danger

Yet… he insisted

I fully intended to keep her at the back of my mind while I focused on more important matters.

The attacks on La Famiglia had become worse since I became heir. The Russians have become bolder, raiding our warehouses and killing men without fear.

One of those attacks was responsible for the Don’s death. The attack had been meant for me. He was not even supposed to be at that meeting and I had been running late. By the time I arrived he was already shot and left for dead along with his security. He had not taken as many men as he should have, saying it was unnecessary. I still remember holding his body and watching life slip away while he gave me one final order, “Find Aria Russo and protect her”

He offered no explanation so I had two of the few men I trust take her and place her under my protection. From the looks of things she was just as confused as I was which only made the situation more complicated.

The only person who might know why, the Don’s brother, doesn’t exist on paper. Only resurfacing when he wants to and very difficult to track.

To make matters worse there had been no progress in finding out where my wife was. Lucia and I had gotten married about six months ago, a month after I was announced as heir.

We had been friends for more than ten years. So when the Don insisted I find a wife, it only made sense for us to marry since she was the daughter of one of the capos. I did not love her but I cared about her and that was usually enough in these situations. Now she was missing and had vanished without a trace. Despite all my efforts, there had been no ransom or demands which made everything even more suspicious.

Adriano walked in.

"You really should knock" I said without looking up.

"Come on we are past that" he replied as he slumped onto the couch.

Adriano was my second in command and the only person who could talk to me like this and only when we were alone.

"Do you have anything on Lucia yet?" I ask, even though I know the answer.

“Nothing. No calls, no ransom, no sightings. It’s like she evaporated.” He shrugs. “I still think she could’ve gotten lost. She’s… not the brightest.”

"Watch it. That is my wife you are talking about."

"Yh, whatever."

"The Russians are getting bolder. It is clear they have an inside man."

"Do you think it could be your brother Matteo?"

"Matteo may hate me and everything I represent but even he would not stoop so low as to work with the Russians."

"Hmmm, we’ll see. So what do we do to drag this mole out?"

"I am working on it. I have a meeting with the capos tomorrow. hopefully we will discuss the next steps."

"I do not trust those old men."

"You do not have to trust them. Some of them may not agree with the Don’s decision to make me heir but they are loyal to the family and you know that."

He sighed dramatically.

He sits up suddenly.

"Speaking of the Don. What is going on with our new house guest? I heard she broke Victor’s nose" Adriano said with a laugh.

"Yes she is clearly a fighter” I mutter “but I do not have time for that. That is why I need you to do something."

He looked at me with interest but stayed quiet.

"Aria will clearly be here for a while until I figure out what I am supposed to protect her from. Only a select few are aware that she is here. Carlos and Victor will be in charge of her security and Imelda and Aida will take care of the house as usual."

"Alright boss. What do you need me to do?"

"I need you to take care of her old life so no one goes looking for her. We do not need the hassle or the attention”

“And?” He adds noticing I had more to say

“And give her a tour, show her which areas she allowed in”

"Aye aye Captain" he grins standing up to leave.

"Be careful” I warn “She bites."

"Aww you almost sound worried about me."

"I do not care about you. I am worried she might get hurt again like with those idiots and if she gets hurt again I will be forced to shoot someone."

He gave me a strange look and let out a scoff.

"Do not worry boss. I am a charmer unlike some people" I glare but he’s already on his way out.

I needed a drink.

  • Under his protection    Chapter 6

DanteWe are under attack! The explosion still rang in my ears as the truth snapped into place. The shooting at the club must have been a mere distraction, unprofessional on purpose, just to pull my men away from the house. They must have been watching this place and just looking for the right opportunity. How did they find out about this place?I did not think too much. I quickly jumped into action.“Aria,” I said, gripping her shoulders, forcing her to look at me. “Listen to me very carefully. We are under attack, and we need to leave now, so I'm going to need you to trust me.”Her eyes went wide, terror swallowing every word she tried to form. I felt it too, but I could not show it.“You stay with me no matter what,” I continued. “If I get hurt, you run. Do you understand me?”She nodded quickly, lips trembling, still silent. The sound of boots echoed down the corridor.Too close.I pulled her off the counter and reached for my gun in the same motion. She gasped, but I did not look

AriaThe longer I stayed trapped in that room, the more restless I became. The walls felt like they were inching closer every second. I needed air. I needed space. I needed a plan.I paced until my legs ached, replaying every word the Don had said, every rule Adriano had mentioned. Nothing added up. Protect me from what? Why me? The questions clawed at my mind until I could barely sit still.By the time dinner rolled around, I was exhausted from doing nothing. When the clock finally struck seven, I slipped out of my room and headed toward the dining area, following the path I remembered from the tour.He was already there. The Don sat at the head of the table, posture rigid, sleeves rolled just enough to reveal strong forearms. The food was laid out, untouched, and the table was set for two.I hesitated at the entrance.“Are you planning on standing there all night, Miss Russo,” he said without looking up, “or are you going to sit.”His voice startled me despite myself. I walked close

AriaAfter pacing for about twenty minutes I finally decided to try the door, only to be met by one of the men who took me earlier. "I am sorry miss, you can’t leave right now" I slam the door shut and let out a frustrated scream. At this point I was beyond pissedI move to the window. Try prying at the edges."I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” An amused voice said from behind me causing me to whirl around so fast I nearly fall.A man leans casually against the wall, amused. “It’s reinforced glass. Even if you managed to break it, you’re on the third floor.”“You wouldn’t survive the jump”“Maybe hitting the ground would be better than dealing with you people.”He laughs, actually laughs."Hi, I am Adriano" he said and extended his hand. I gave him the scariest expression I could manage. From the look on his face he was more amused than intimidated."I want to go home" I said flatly."I am sorry. I cannot help you with that. I am only here to give you a tour of the house” he offers

Chapter 2Aria“You were not supposed to hurt her.”“She broke my nose!”“I am just saying, the Don is not going to be happy.”Voices pull me from the fog. My head throbs, heavy and slow. I tried to move but my hands and feet were tied. I was in the back of a car but I could not tell how long I had been out.““Please… let me go,” I whisper.“Great,” the broken-nose guy mutters. “She’s awake.”“Go back to sleep. We’re almost there.”“Where are you taking me?” No one answers. Why would anyone take me? I did not have money for ransom. Were they going to kill me? Maybe they were organ traffickers. Different thoughts spiraled in my mind until I drifted off to sleep again. The next time I woke up, I was in a beautifully furnished and well lit room. Luckily my hands and feet were no longer bound and my cuts had been cleaned and bandaged. Perfect. Maybe they wanted me in good condition for whatever comes next.I looked around. The room was massive with a large bed and expensive furniture. L

  • Under his protection    Chapter 1

AriaToday is officially one of the worst days I’ve had in a long time.My alarm didn’t go off, which means I woke up late, which means I started the day already drowning in panic. Yes, it’s my library and technically I can stroll in at whatever hour I feel like… but I like opening early. It just feels right. And with Lola on maternity leave, mornings are on me.To make matters worse, the coffee shop where I usually get my fix went out of business last week. Without warning or notice. Now almost running, as I make my way to the library and find Carlos already by the steps waiting for me. Which is terrifying, because Carlos is never early.“Hello ma’am,” Carlos chimes with a knowing grin.“Oh please,” I groan. “You’re early one time.”He lifts his hands in mock innocence. “I didn’t say anything.”I roll my eyes and unlock the door. The library is like a second home. When I was a kid I lived for the quiet, the smell of old paper and afternoons lost in fiction. This is probably why I had
