Dante

I stepped out of the room and decided to leave it unlocked. It is not like she could go anywhere. She wouldn’t make it past the hallway let alone the property. I gave a slight nod toward Carlos who stood right outside her door before heading to my office.

The pickup was supposed to be a simple grab and ditch operation, but those two idiots somehow messed it up. Victor ended up with a broken nose and she came in with scraped knees and tears in her sweater.

They are lucky I have other things to worry about or I would have blown their kneecaps off for putting a mark on her.

This entire Aria situation felt like nothing but a distraction and a complete waste of my time. I did not know who she was or why she mattered but the Don’s last order… His dying wish was to find her and protect her.

Protect her from what? None of it made sense. I have no idea. From her file she did not seem to be in any danger. She was a quiet librarian with a dead-end routine and no ties to any crime family. So why would she be important?

Nothing about her screamed danger

Yet… he insisted

I fully intended to keep her at the back of my mind while I focused on more important matters.

The attacks on La Famiglia had become worse since I became heir. The Russians have become bolder, raiding our warehouses and killing men without fear.

One of those attacks was responsible for the Don’s death. The attack had been meant for me. He was not even supposed to be at that meeting and I had been running late. By the time I arrived he was already shot and left for dead along with his security. He had not taken as many men as he should have, saying it was unnecessary. I still remember holding his body and watching life slip away while he gave me one final order, “Find Aria Russo and protect her”

He offered no explanation so I had two of the few men I trust take her and place her under my protection. From the looks of things she was just as confused as I was which only made the situation more complicated.

The only person who might know why, the Don’s brother, doesn’t exist on paper. Only resurfacing when he wants to and very difficult to track.

To make matters worse there had been no progress in finding out where my wife was. Lucia and I had gotten married about six months ago, a month after I was announced as heir.

We had been friends for more than ten years. So when the Don insisted I find a wife, it only made sense for us to marry since she was the daughter of one of the capos. I did not love her but I cared about her and that was usually enough in these situations. Now she was missing and had vanished without a trace. Despite all my efforts, there had been no ransom or demands which made everything even more suspicious.

Adriano walked in.

"You really should knock" I said without looking up.

"Come on we are past that" he replied as he slumped onto the couch.

Adriano was my second in command and the only person who could talk to me like this and only when we were alone.

"Do you have anything on Lucia yet?" I ask, even though I know the answer.

“Nothing. No calls, no ransom, no sightings. It’s like she evaporated.” He shrugs. “I still think she could’ve gotten lost. She’s… not the brightest.”

"Watch it. That is my wife you are talking about."

"Yh, whatever."

"The Russians are getting bolder. It is clear they have an inside man."

"Do you think it could be your brother Matteo?"

"Matteo may hate me and everything I represent but even he would not stoop so low as to work with the Russians."

"Hmmm, we’ll see. So what do we do to drag this mole out?"

"I am working on it. I have a meeting with the capos tomorrow. hopefully we will discuss the next steps."

"I do not trust those old men."

"You do not have to trust them. Some of them may not agree with the Don’s decision to make me heir but they are loyal to the family and you know that."

He sighed dramatically.

He sits up suddenly.

"Speaking of the Don. What is going on with our new house guest? I heard she broke Victor’s nose" Adriano said with a laugh.

"Yes she is clearly a fighter” I mutter “but I do not have time for that. That is why I need you to do something."

He looked at me with interest but stayed quiet.

"Aria will clearly be here for a while until I figure out what I am supposed to protect her from. Only a select few are aware that she is here. Carlos and Victor will be in charge of her security and Imelda and Aida will take care of the house as usual."

"Alright boss. What do you need me to do?"

"I need you to take care of her old life so no one goes looking for her. We do not need the hassle or the attention”

“And?” He adds noticing I had more to say

“And give her a tour, show her which areas she allowed in”

"Aye aye Captain" he grins standing up to leave.

"Be careful,” I warned. “She bites.”

“You almost sound worried,” Adriano said.

“I’m not.”

He left anyway.

Silence settled over the room.

My phone buzzed.

Unknown number. That’s weird. Very few people can contact me directly.

I answered.

“Speak.”

For a second, there was only static.

Then—

“You have her.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Who is this?”

“That doesn’t matter.” The voice was distorted, unrecognizable. “What matters is that you listen carefully.”

I said nothing.

“The girl you took… she is not just some civilian, she’s important.

My jaw tightened.

“You have one job now. Keep her alive.”

“Or what?”

A pause.

“Or you won’t just lose her.”

The voice dropped slightly.

“You will lose your position… your family… everything you think you control.”

My expression hardened.

“Explain.”

A quiet, almost amused breath came through the line.

“You’re the Don. Figure it out.”

The line went dead.

Slowly, I lowered the phone.

For the first time since bringing her here…

I realized I might not be the one in control.

DanteI shouldn’t have left her alone, but right now, the rage was too raw. Being around her might cause more harm than good. The first thing I did was have Adriano send Lola to her. She needed comfort, and I couldn’t be the one to give it to her.The basement smelled like iron and sweat when I walked in.Marco stood in the corner, leaning against the wall with a few other men.In the center of the room, the man who caused this sat there bleeding but with a smug look on his face.It wouldn’t be there for long.“If it isn’t the most gracious Don,” his mocking tone filled the air.I smirked but didn’t respond as I moved to the table filled with torture tools. My focus was on making him regret coming after Aria. Men like this would rather die than give information, so I wasn’t going to try.“Don’t you want to know who sent me?” amusement filled his voice. But I didn’t reply. Maybe if he kept talking, he might let something slip.“Don’t you want to know who wants your little wife dead?”I

DanteA week agoMy phone rang, cutting off whatever Aria was about to say.Adriano.He never called unless it was important.I stepped away from the table, not wanting Aria to hear anything that would worry her.“What?”“Lucia has been found.”Four simple words.Four words powerful enough to make my entire body lock up.For a second, I forgot how to breathe.“Boss?” Adriano’s voice pulled me back.“What do you mean?”“I mean your wife has been found.”My grip tightened around the phone.“When?”“One of Franco’s cameras picked her up in his territory this afternoon.” He paused briefly. “Looks like she’s been there the whole time.”I stayed silent.Across the rooftop, Aria was watching me now, concern already written across her face.I lowered my voice immediately.“Where has she been?”“She’s been staying with locals. Apparently, when they found her, she couldn’t remember anything.”Amnesia.I closed my eyes briefly.“The family she stayed with claims she lost her memory, but we still

AriaBy the next morning, the distance between us had already begun.I woke up to Dante getting dressed for the day. From his untouched side of the bed, I could tell he didn’t sleep in it at all.“You did come to bed last night.”Dante raised his eyes to look at me through the mirror.“I had work to do.”“Uhm okay—”“I have to go now,” Dante cut in, surprising me. “I will see you later today.”With that, he walked out without giving me his usual forehead kiss. Nothing. After that morning things only got worse. This went on for days. I barely saw him and when I did, it was like he wanted to be anywhere but with me.He didn’t touch me anymore. No random kisses.Nothing.I knew from the staff that he still made sure I was comfortable but that wasn’t enough. It felt wrong.“Hey, you are zoning out again.”Gemma’s voice snapped me from my thoughts.“I’m not.”“You absolutely are.”I sighed.Four days.It had been four days since the attack and Dante hadn’t come around. He barely ate or sle

AriaThe ride back to the estate was silent. Dante sat beside me facing forward, one hand gripping his gun so tightly, his knuckles had almost turned white. His jaw was tight and his anger radiated off him.I wanted to say something, make him feel better, but in this state, I was not sure how he’d react.Nobody spoke.Carlos was driving now, not the other two guards who had brought us out.He looked alert, glancing around occasionally, possibly checking for any sign of danger.I wanted to close my eyes but all it did was bring me back to that moment. The glass shattering. The gunshot. The way Dante had thrown me to the ground without hesitation. The way his body covered mine completely.I couldn’t help the feeling that this was my fault. He wanted to make me happy, but this happened.I remained still, careful not to make a sound and trying to take comfort in the fact that no one was hurt.My gaze drifted to the diamond ring on my finger. Less than thirty minutes ago, everything was pe

AriaI tried not to be disappointed, but I couldn’t help it.He promised.Glancing at the clock, it was past ten, and the dinner in front of me had gone cold. I put so much effort into this. Okay, not like I cooked the meal, but I made sure everything was perfect. The fact that he promised only made things worse.I thought mafia men had a thing about keeping their word and all of that.“You should eat something.”I didn’t notice Gemma and Lola had walked into the dining room until Gemma spoke.“Really, you are glaring at the plate like you could start a war with it.”“I’m not glaring.”“You absolutely are.”Lola hid her smile.I sighed and finally pushed the plate away.“He’s probably busy,” Lola said carefully.I knew that.Of course I knew that. But honestly, that didn’t make it hurt any less. “There’s always something,” I muttered quietly. The words slipped out before I could stop them.Neither of them replied.Because we all knew it was true.I must have fallen asleep while waiti

  • Under his protection    Chapter 37

AriaI still couldn’t shake the feeling Dante was keeping something from me, but I decided not to add to his stress.Over the next couple of days, I barely saw him. He either left before I woke up or came back after I had fallen asleep. There was always one meeting, phone call, or something else.Even when he managed to come to bed early, his mind was always far away.I wanted to do something, anything, to make him feel better.Which was exactly how I found myself standing in the kitchen at five in the morning making coffee for a mafia don.Honestly, if someone had told me a month ago that this would become my life, I would have laughed in their face.“You know,” Lola said as she walked in with Mia on her hip, “I didn’t peg you as the type to wake up so early to make coffee. I guess marriage does change people.”She set Mia down on the high chair.“Do you even know what you are doing?”“Yes, I do,” I replied, pouring the coffee into a mug. “It’s for Dante.”“Why? What did he do?”“Wha
