Chapter 2

Author: Sweetie Moore
My heart had already gone numb, and when I spoke, my voice was so calm that it almost sounded indifferent.

"Yeah. I understand. It won't happen again."

Cameron looked at me, surprised by how easily I'd accepted his accusation. His tone softened as he tried to justify himself.

"Poppy's sick. I was worried something might happen to her, so I went along with what she wanted."

I clenched my fists beneath the seat, not saying another word.

Even if Poppy was sick, taking care of her was hardly his responsibility. Cameron had always treated me like a fool, hiding behind the same excuse every time.

At first, I'd believed him, thinking that he was simply a kindhearted man who couldn't bring himself to turn away someone who needed help.

But as I watched the familiar streets blur past outside the window, I felt the last of my love for him slowly slipping away.

For nine years, I'd been more than just Cameron's wife. As his secretary, I'd taken care of almost every detail of his life, from his schedule and business affairs to his meals.

His eating habits had always been terrible, so I'd spent years reminding him to eat on time and take better care of himself.

Once, my stomach had acted up so badly that I doubled over in pain, sweating through my clothes. Instead of asking if I was all right, Cameron had coldly knocked my medication out of my hand, his eyes filled with disgust.

"Seriously? Poppy's asthma is a condition she's had since birth. I've just looked after her a little, like an older brother would. Do you have to fake illness just to compete for my attention?"

I'd bent down to pick up the scattered pills one by one and swallow them through my tears. The pain in my stomach had been excruciating, yet somehow it still couldn't compare to the hurt his words had caused.

That was when I finally understood that Cameron wasn't looking after Poppy simply because he was kind.

It was more than that. He loved her.

...

"Yeah. I know," I replied.

While Cameron wasn't paying attention, I took out my phone and accepted the job offer I'd received from an international corporation.

The response came almost immediately.

"Welcome to the team. We've already arranged a place for you to stay. When are you planning to leave? I'll come pick you up."

"Tomorrow."

Back then, I'd given up my career just to stay beside Cameron. Now I was tired, and I didn't want this marriage anymore. From now on, I would live for myself.

Cameron noticed that I was quietly looking at my phone, and his expression hardened again.

"You caused Poppy's asthma attack, and you still have the nerve to sit there texting as if nothing happened?" he barked.

"I've already reserved a private hospital suite," I said without looking up. "Once you get there, you can check in directly."

By then, I had finished booking my flight. The wedding ring I'd once treasured more than anything was lying on the seat beside me, mocking me.

Cameron stared at me for several silent seconds, apparently realizing that he'd misunderstood. His expression turned awkward, and he offered to reimburse me for the expenses.

"Just be reasonable," he said, softening his tone. "Once Poppy's feeling better, we'll make our marriage public. There's no need to upset her right now."

Right there, he transferred 500 thousand dollars to me without hesitation. He really was generous.

"Okay." I didn't even bother accepting the money.

After all, our marriage was coming to an end.

When we got home, I went inside alone. The enormous house was as quiet as ever. I'd long since grown accustomed to that kind of silence.

While packing, I called my mother and told her to get ready for our flight tomorrow.

My jewelry box was filled with luxury watches and expensive accessories, but among all those things, the only item that had ever truly belonged to me was a tiny pair of gold stud earrings.

Ten years ago, when Cameron and I were dating, he'd been worried that my ears might react badly to cheap jewelry, so he'd spent every dollar of his savings on those earrings.

I'd been so touched by the gesture that I'd hugged him and cried. I had even turned down job offers from several major companies so I could stay by his side while he built his business from nothing.

I had been perfectly content to be his little secretary. But after that, I never received another gift from him.

For every major holiday, I would prepare an elaborate dinner and carefully choose a present for him, and our ninth wedding anniversary had been no different.

Cameron led me into the storage room, where dozens of neatly wrapped gift boxes had been stacked from floor to ceiling. He picked up a brand-new pair of earrings and pressed them into my hand before eagerly opening the other boxes one by one, explaining which ones were the gifts he'd bought to make up for all the years he'd neglected me.I dropped the earrings, and the tiny pieces of jewelry rolled straight into the back of the cabinet."I had those custom-made for you." Cameron dropped to the floor in a panic, reaching into the narrow gap to fish them out.I shook my head. "Once something is lost, finding another one doesn't make it the same thing."He still refused to give up, reaching deeper into the gap until his hand came back covered in dust."I'll have another pair made. I'll make them the same as the original," he insisted.I was speechless. If I hadn't needed to finish the divorce, I wouldn't have bothered going through any of this with him.It was obvious what he was

"Stop dragging this out. I gave you nine years of my youth, and I'm exhausted."I pressed the pen into his hand, and Cameron's fingers trembled as he finally signed the agreement. He immediately turned his face away, trying to hide the tears in his eyes.Because of recent changes to the law, signing the divorce agreement wasn't enough to make the divorce official. We still had to go through a mandatory waiting period before it could be finalized. That was fine with me. I'd simply come back once the waiting period was over, sign the final paperwork, and be done with it.For the first time in years, I felt truly free, and I couldn't help smiling as I reached for the door. Cameron suddenly wrapped his arms around me from behind. "Don't push me away. Just let me hold you for a little longer."I let him hold me while his heavy breathing assailed my shoulder. Right then, a cab pulled up outside, and my mother stepped out, waving to me.Cameron followed me outside. "Mom..."It was th

Poppy panicked at the prospect of being transferred, and almost immediately, her asthma seemed to flare up again.Cameron instinctively reached out to steady her, but then he caught sight of me watching. He stopped himself and forced himself to sound indifferent."Her medication is in her bag. Get it for her.""We're getting divorced," I said smoothly. "You don't have to worry about appearances anymore."It turned out that he had known where the problem in our marriage lay all along; he simply hadn't cared enough to change anything because he'd been comfortable with things the way they were. The proud, self-assured man finally lowered his head and pleaded with me. "Stephanie, can you stay?"For a moment, I almost saw the boy he'd been ten years ago—the frightened teenager who'd been thrown out of his parents' house and had once leaned against my shoulder, showing his vulnerable side.I'd comforted him gently and promised that he could always rely on me. But somewhere during thos

"I'm taking it to my lawyer," Cameron stammered. "Who knows what kind of trap you might have set in here?"While he didn't love me, he refused to let me go, which left me with only one conclusion. He was simply trying to make things difficult for me."If you don't want to sign, that's fine. We can settle everything through the courts," I said, turning to leave.Cameron suddenly grabbed my hand, his eyes glistening. "Are you really going to be this heartless?"I yanked my hand free, ready to shoot back.Poppy hurried over and stepped in front of him, her face flushed with indignation."Cameron hasn't done anything to betray you. He's such a good man. How can you humiliate him in front of the entire company like this?"She stood protectively in front of him, then thoughtfully ushered the curious employees away."A good man? Fine. I'm giving him to you," I said evenly, tired of the back-and-forth.I turned to leave, but Cameron called after me. "Fine. We'll go to the courthouse a

Looking back, I found those things laughable. For years, I was too embarrassed to hang out with my friends. I was afraid that I couldn't afford my share of the bill.Yet they assumed that, after marrying a wealthy man, I was deliberately being stingy with them, and one by one, they stopped inviting me.I'd spent all those years struggling alongside Cameron, only to end up with nothing but an empty house and no one left beside me.After a long silence, Cameron reached into his wallet, pulled out a bank card, and held it out to me."I only made you split the expenses to cut unnecessary spending. I've never touched this money; it's all been sitting there," he explained with good faith. "If money is what this is about, you don't have to pay for anything anymore. I'll cover all of our living expenses from now on."He looked at me expectantly, as though the offer should have been enough to make me stay. But I pushed the card back. "There's no need to bring up the past."If money had e

"What are you going to do overseas?" Cameron asked, confused. He thought for a moment and added cautiously, "Are you planning to take a trip? If so, wait until things settle down here, and I'll go with you. Just stop making a fuss. The company is in a critical stage of growth, and I can't just walk away right now."For years, I'd wanted to travel with him and see more of the world. But every time, he'd poured cold water on the idea, asking what was so special about looking at scenery when we could spend that time landing more deals instead.Yet ever since Poppy came along, he'd been flying off with her every few days. Even now, the photos from their trips were still all over her social media, showing the two of them leaning against each other with bright, happy smiles. No wonder everyone at the company assumed they were a couple. Cameron was the only one still stubbornly insisting that they were nothing more than coworkers."No, thanks." I shook my head and handed him my resignati
