Chapter 3

Author: Sweetie Moore
The tie I'd carefully picked out for Cameron was still sitting unopened at the edge of the table.

Beside it was an elegant gift box containing a complete set of heavy solid-gold jewelry and a bank card. For a moment, I thought he had finally come to his senses and remembered that he owed me a gift.

But the moment I opened the card inside, I couldn't help laughing bitterly.

[Congratulations to Poppy Campbell on completing her 100 days with the company. Keep up the great work, and here's to many more.]

Cameron's handwriting had always been terribly messy.

I'd been surprised when he'd suddenly announced a while ago that he wanted to practice. I'd foolishly thought that, after all these years of nagging him about it, he'd finally taken my advice.

When I opened the drawer and saw the thick stack of handwriting practice sheets inside, I realized just how ridiculous I'd been.

The same words had been written over and over across page after page. Every single one of them seemed to be mocking me for believing that those efforts had anything to do with me.

I'd treasured those earrings for ten years without ever daring to wear them, keeping them sealed inside a protective pouch.

Now, when I finally took them out, I discovered that the gold had faded away, revealing the dark, tarnished metal underneath.

A sharp pain went through my chest, and I let out a bitter laugh. The gift I'd cherished for years turned out to be a fake.

I threw them straight into the trash, then picked up the unopened tie and tossed that in as well. By the time I finished cleaning everything up, it was already midnight.

Assuming Cameron wouldn't be coming home tonight either, I washed up and went to sleep in the guest room. I never expected him to come back in the wee hours and wake me.

His voice echoed through the house. "Stephanie! Where are you?"

In the past, no matter how late he came home, I'd always stay up waiting for him, make sure he had something to eat, and take care of whatever he needed before finally going to bed.

This time, I shot out of bed and locked the door before he could reach the room.

This was rare! Whenever Cameron went to take care of Poppy, he usually stayed at her place all night, so why had he come home at three in the morning?

"Stephanie, if you're awake, why aren't you answering me?" he demanded.

Every time Poppy had gotten sick in the past, Cameron would stay up all night taking care of her.

At first, I'd been worried that something had happened to him. When I couldn't reach him by phone, I'd called the police, only to discover that he was fine and had been at Poppy's apartment the entire time.

I'd been frantic with worry while he'd lectured me for wasting police resources. Back then, I had been too annoying because I worried about him too much.

Now, apparently, I was annoying because I wouldn't answer him. What a joke!

I rolled over, pulled the blanket higher, and decided I couldn't care less. Yet Cameron kept pounding on the door, and after a while, the irritation in his voice became impossible to miss.

"I've been taking care of Poppy all day, and I'm exhausted," he shouted. "Stop throwing a tantrum and come make me something to eat. Bring me some hot water while you're at it. My feet are killing me. Come give me a massage."

I couldn't even be bothered to respond. Instead, I pulled the blanket over my head, rolled onto my side, and fell asleep again.

The next morning, Cameron hadn't gone back to check on Poppy.

To my surprise, he was standing in the kitchen preparing breakfast.

"You're up. Come have some oatmeal. It will help settle your stomach," he said, though his expression remained somewhat stiff and unpleasant.

I knew that he was expecting me to accept it and make peace with him.

"Eat quickly. I still need to take it to Poppy," he added, smugly raising an eyebrow. "She's not as petty as you are. She even told me not to argue with you, and she doesn't need you to apologize. You should be grateful."

I quietly put down my spoon.

So, this was breakfast he had prepared for her. I was merely getting a portion because I happened to be there.

That made sense, though. A man as cold as him would never go out of his way to make breakfast just to win me over.

But by then, I couldn't even bring myself to argue with him. I simply took the divorce agreement I had prepared and placed it in front of him.

"Before I leave, sign it," I said.

But he pushed it back without even looking.

Cameron led me into the storage room, where dozens of neatly wrapped gift boxes had been stacked from floor to ceiling. He picked up a brand-new pair of earrings and pressed them into my hand before eagerly opening the other boxes one by one, explaining which ones were the gifts he'd bought to make up for all the years he'd neglected me.I dropped the earrings, and the tiny pieces of jewelry rolled straight into the back of the cabinet."I had those custom-made for you." Cameron dropped to the floor in a panic, reaching into the narrow gap to fish them out.I shook my head. "Once something is lost, finding another one doesn't make it the same thing."He still refused to give up, reaching deeper into the gap until his hand came back covered in dust."I'll have another pair made. I'll make them the same as the original," he insisted.I was speechless. If I hadn't needed to finish the divorce, I wouldn't have bothered going through any of this with him.It was obvious what he was

"Stop dragging this out. I gave you nine years of my youth, and I'm exhausted."I pressed the pen into his hand, and Cameron's fingers trembled as he finally signed the agreement. He immediately turned his face away, trying to hide the tears in his eyes.Because of recent changes to the law, signing the divorce agreement wasn't enough to make the divorce official. We still had to go through a mandatory waiting period before it could be finalized. That was fine with me. I'd simply come back once the waiting period was over, sign the final paperwork, and be done with it.For the first time in years, I felt truly free, and I couldn't help smiling as I reached for the door. Cameron suddenly wrapped his arms around me from behind. "Don't push me away. Just let me hold you for a little longer."I let him hold me while his heavy breathing assailed my shoulder. Right then, a cab pulled up outside, and my mother stepped out, waving to me.Cameron followed me outside. "Mom..."It was th

Poppy panicked at the prospect of being transferred, and almost immediately, her asthma seemed to flare up again.Cameron instinctively reached out to steady her, but then he caught sight of me watching. He stopped himself and forced himself to sound indifferent."Her medication is in her bag. Get it for her.""We're getting divorced," I said smoothly. "You don't have to worry about appearances anymore."It turned out that he had known where the problem in our marriage lay all along; he simply hadn't cared enough to change anything because he'd been comfortable with things the way they were. The proud, self-assured man finally lowered his head and pleaded with me. "Stephanie, can you stay?"For a moment, I almost saw the boy he'd been ten years ago—the frightened teenager who'd been thrown out of his parents' house and had once leaned against my shoulder, showing his vulnerable side.I'd comforted him gently and promised that he could always rely on me. But somewhere during thos

"I'm taking it to my lawyer," Cameron stammered. "Who knows what kind of trap you might have set in here?"While he didn't love me, he refused to let me go, which left me with only one conclusion. He was simply trying to make things difficult for me."If you don't want to sign, that's fine. We can settle everything through the courts," I said, turning to leave.Cameron suddenly grabbed my hand, his eyes glistening. "Are you really going to be this heartless?"I yanked my hand free, ready to shoot back.Poppy hurried over and stepped in front of him, her face flushed with indignation."Cameron hasn't done anything to betray you. He's such a good man. How can you humiliate him in front of the entire company like this?"She stood protectively in front of him, then thoughtfully ushered the curious employees away."A good man? Fine. I'm giving him to you," I said evenly, tired of the back-and-forth.I turned to leave, but Cameron called after me. "Fine. We'll go to the courthouse a

Looking back, I found those things laughable. For years, I was too embarrassed to hang out with my friends. I was afraid that I couldn't afford my share of the bill.Yet they assumed that, after marrying a wealthy man, I was deliberately being stingy with them, and one by one, they stopped inviting me.I'd spent all those years struggling alongside Cameron, only to end up with nothing but an empty house and no one left beside me.After a long silence, Cameron reached into his wallet, pulled out a bank card, and held it out to me."I only made you split the expenses to cut unnecessary spending. I've never touched this money; it's all been sitting there," he explained with good faith. "If money is what this is about, you don't have to pay for anything anymore. I'll cover all of our living expenses from now on."He looked at me expectantly, as though the offer should have been enough to make me stay. But I pushed the card back. "There's no need to bring up the past."If money had e

"What are you going to do overseas?" Cameron asked, confused. He thought for a moment and added cautiously, "Are you planning to take a trip? If so, wait until things settle down here, and I'll go with you. Just stop making a fuss. The company is in a critical stage of growth, and I can't just walk away right now."For years, I'd wanted to travel with him and see more of the world. But every time, he'd poured cold water on the idea, asking what was so special about looking at scenery when we could spend that time landing more deals instead.Yet ever since Poppy came along, he'd been flying off with her every few days. Even now, the photos from their trips were still all over her social media, showing the two of them leaning against each other with bright, happy smiles. No wonder everyone at the company assumed they were a couple. Cameron was the only one still stubbornly insisting that they were nothing more than coworkers."No, thanks." I shook my head and handed him my resignati
