Chapter 5

Auteur: Tidal Crowd
A large group of people filed in with great momentum.

At the front was a man with an overwhelming presence—the CEO of the group headquarters, Roger Beckett.

The room fell silent instantly. Everyone sprang to their feet, faces plastered with ingratiating smiles.

Mr. Jackman practically jogged over, bowing and scraping. "Mr. Beckett, you're here! Please, this way—your seat is ready!"

Patricia and the other two hurriedly adjusted their clothes, straightened their backs, and struck the pose of elite core staff, their eyes burning as they stared at Roger, as if he were a walking ATM.

Roger didn't spare them a glance. He strode straight toward the main seat.

As he passed by me, his steps paused—just slightly.

Patricia, sharp-eyed as ever, immediately jumped out and pointed at me, shouting,

"Chloe! Are you blind? Mr. Beckett is here, and you're not even standing up! You actually dare sit there so boldly—no manners at all!"

Her shout successfully drew Roger's attention.

Mr. Jackman snapped back to his senses, cold sweat instantly breaking out. He pointed at me and yelled, "Security! Where the hell are you? How did you let this kind of trash in here? Drag her out, now!"

Turning to Roger, he forced a smile. "Mr. Beckett, my sincerest apologies. She's a former employee our department fired—sticky fingers and not quite right in the head. She's been refusing to leave. I'll have someone remove her immediately so she doesn't offend your eyes."

Patricia seized the moment to add fuel to the fire. "That's right, Mr. Beckett. Her name is Chloe. Back when she was on the project team, she did nothing at all, stole our core data, and her private life is extremely messy. We pitied her and didn't call the police—but who knew she'd be this shameless?"

"Stole data? Private life… chaotic?"

Roger stopped walking and repeated the words calmly.

His tone revealed nothing.

Patricia took it as confirmation and went all in. "Exactly! We have evidence! She didn't just steal—she even tried to seduce Mr. Jackman. After being rejected, she held a grudge and tried to sabotage today's acceptance meeting!"

"People like her are a cancer in the company! She must be punished severely!" Tasha shouted righteously.

The three of them closed in around me, as if I were some unforgivable criminal.

Eager to perform in front of leadership, Vinny reached out to grab my arm. "What are you still sitting for? Get out!"

The moment his hand touched my sleeve, I flung it away.

I stood up and calmly adjusted my collar.

"This," I said coolly, "is what you call evidence?"

I looked at them, my gaze icy.

"Utter nonsense!" Mr. Jackman roared. "You dare assault our staff right in front of Mr. Beckett? You've got some nerve! Someone—call the police! We need to get her arrested!"

The room descended into chaos.

Patricia looked at me smugly, mouthing the words: You're finished.

Just as security rushed in to restrain me, Roger—who had remained silent the entire time—finally spoke.

"Enough."

His voice wasn't loud, but it carried unquestionable authority.

Everyone froze.

Mr. Jackman stood there dumbfounded. "Mr. Beckett…"

Roger didn't even glance his way. He walked straight up to me.

Then, right in front of everyone’s stunned faces, he gave a slight, formal bow and held out both hands.

"Director Simpson," he said, his tone deeply respectful, "on behalf of the board, please accept our sincerest apologies for the ordeal you have endured these past few days."

Days passed, and slowly, the names of those three people faded from my life.Half a year later, the company organized a charitable donation trip to a remote, underprivileged region. I went as the company's representative to a small mountain village school. It was there that I saw Tasha again. She wore simple clothes, her face weathered and lined, handing out lunch to a group of children. When she saw me, she froze. The spoon in her hand clattered to the ground. The once-glamorous office professional now looked older than the villagers she served. I was momentarily taken aback. The world really is small. She avoided my gaze, lowering her head as if trying to pretend she didn't know me.The school principal came over warmly, introducing her."Ms. Simpson, this is our volunteer teacher, Tasha Parker. She came from the city six months ago and has been teaching here. The children adore her."Volunteer teacher?I studied Tasha with a new curiosity. Could a person who had once betray

Patricia's fate turned out even worse than Tasha's.She had always prided herself on being both beautiful and talented—the center of attention in the office. But after being fired, the shock of her fall proved too much. Her mind began to fray.Rumor had it she wandered the streets outside high-rise office buildings every day, still wearing the professional suits she'd worn to work, her makeup immaculate. She would approach any sharply dressed man and claim she was a project director, negotiating a multi-million-dollar deal. Everyone treated her as a lunatic and avoided her.She also kept calling and texting me. At first, her messages were venomous curses, but over time, they turned to desperate pleas.Patricia: [Chloe, I'm sorry. I truly am!]Patricia: [I'll do anything if you just forgive me.]Patricia: [I can be your servant, carry your shoes, whatever you want—just spare me.]I didn't reply once. For people like her, any ounce of sympathy would only be self-cruelty.One afte

The verdict for Patricia and her accomplices came down quickly.Mr. Jackman, due to the enormous sums involved in his crimes, was sentenced to fifteen years in prison and had all his illicit gains confiscated. His fall sent shockwaves through the company.Patricia, Tasha, and Vinny, though not criminally liable for a major offense, were fired immediately for false accusations, workplace bullying, and colluding to destroy evidence—and blacklisted across the entire industry. That meant they would never work in this field again. But it didn't end there. The company's legal department filed civil suits against them, demanding compensation for the massive reputational damage and potential project delays caused by their actions. The amount? 200 thousand dollars. That was an astronomical figure for them. Even selling their houses and cars wouldn't cover it. What awaited them was a long, grueling life of debt.…I didn't see Tasha again until a few days later.I had just finished work

The police arrived quickly.Mr. Jackman, Patricia, Tasha, and Vinny were hauled away in shame. As they passed me, Tasha suddenly thrashed and screamed at me, "Chloe! You bitch! You cruel bitch! Even if we were at fault, we shouldn't go to jail! You set us up on purpose! You'll get what's coming to you!"I didn't spare her a single glance. The best way to deal with rabid dogs is to ignore them.Silence returned to the conference room.Roger stepped in front of me, his expression apologetic."Director Simpson, I'm sorry you had to endure this. This was all designed to draw out Mr. Jackman, the big fish. Not telling you the full plan in advance was my oversight."I shook my head. "It's fine, Roger. I didn't expect things to escalate like this. But… the evidence was destroyed. What do we do now?"That was the question I'd been most worried about.Roger smiled and pulled another identical hard drive from his briefcase."Don't worry. The one they destroyed was just a copy. I secur

"Mr. Beckett, we…" Patricia dropped to her knees with a thud. "We were wrong! We're so sorry!"She clutched at Roger's pant leg, crying and wailing."We lost our heads! Greed blinded us!"Tasha and Vinny snapped out of it as well. Following her lead, they knelt on the floor and began begging frantically."Director Simpson, please, we beg you for forgiveness. Give us one more chance!""We'll never dare do this again!""We have elderly parents and young children to support. We can't lose this job!"The same old lines.Exactly the same as three months ago, when they'd begged me to pull them into the project. The irony was almost painful.I watched them coldly, saying nothing.Roger frowned in disgust and told the security guards, "Take them away."The guards stepped forward at once and dragged the three of them up from the floor."Now you know you were wrong? Too late." Roger's voice was icy. "What you destroyed wasn't just project core data."His words stunned everyone in t

Director?!Roger's words landed like a thunderclap in the conference room. The entire space fell into a dead silence. The obsequious smile froze on Mr. Jackman's face. The smug cruelty on Patricia and the others stiffened into something almost comical.Their eyes went wide, mouths slightly open, as if they'd just witnessed something utterly impossible."M-Mr. Beckett…" Mr. Jackman's tongue tangled. "Y-you… you must be mistaken? She… her name is Chloe. She's not a director. She's just the project initiator, that's all…"Roger shot him a cold glance."Mistaken? Mr. Jackman, I think it's you whose memory has failed. Director Simpson was specially dispatched by headquarters to evaluate the operational performance of your branch's projects."This top-tier project—from initiation to execution—has been under her full authority."Roger's voice wasn't loud, but every word struck like a sledgehammer, slamming into the hearts of Mr. Jackman, Patricia, and the others.Their faces draine
