Chapter 3

Author: Nine Fifteen
I blocked Matt on all social media platforms the moment I got home.

Then, I started packing his stuff that was lying around my house—his shirt, his favorite PlayStation, and the cheap plushies he got for me on a whim.

Staring at these items, I couldn't help but lose myself in the past.

During my sophomore year, just to share something in common with him, I forced myself to minor in Finance, a subject I hated.

Once, in my junior year, his gastric condition flared up, and he called me in the middle of the night because he was in pain. I went running to the pharmacy in the pouring rain, stayed by his side all night, and made breakfast for him.

When he woke up and noticed me slumped over the side of his bed, he merely gave me a casual "thanks".

Later, we became an item. Even though our relationship was kept secret, I was content.

I learned to cook for him and even burned my hands on several occasions, all because he told me he wanted some home-cooked food. I burned the midnight oil organizing his company's financial reports and went into work the next day with dark circles under my eyes.

He enjoyed all my sacrifices without a second thought. Whenever our relationship was questioned, he would say, "Sienna is just a close friend of mine. There's nothing going on between us."

I thought if I became good enough, one day he would fall for me. Until he decided to go along with the blind date his family set up for him.

That was when I realized that some people were truly heartless.

I tucked the last of his clothes into the box and taped it up. Then, I dropped them off at the courier office so they could be delivered to Matt's company.

After everything was settled, I let out a long sigh of relief. It was as if the shackles that had been holding me back all these years had finally been taken off.

Late that night, my phone screen lit up with a text from an unknown number. But I immediately recognized the tone of the texter. The message read, "Sienna, why were you with Daniel today? Don't mingle with him. He's not a decent person."

How laughable.

Matt was always like this—limiting me from socializing with other people or interacting with other men, but never truly letting me integrate into his own circle. All his friends just knew me as a close friend who was always at his beck and call.

I didn't bother to reply, choosing instead to block this number too.

The next morning, I walked into my superior's office and placed an application form on his table. "Mr. Devine, I'd like to request a job transfer."

My superior, Josh Devine, looked surprised. "Sienna, your current role is stable and low-stress. Why the sudden urge to join the core project team? The workload is notoriously heavy and involves frequent business travel."

In the past, I had remained in the company's least demanding administrative role, earning a meager salary while letting my skills go to waste because I wanted to be with Matt all the time and showed up for him immediately when he needed me.

And to think, I had majored in architectural design and was once an honor student on a full scholarship. Yet, for Matt, I gave up my dreams and goals and became someone who revolved only around him.

"I want to push myself while I'm still young." I smiled, an unwavering determination in my eyes. "I heard a team is being assembled for Brightside Hospital's bidding project, and I'd like to give it a try."

That was the company's biggest project at the moment. If I successfully pulled it off, it would be the biggest turning point in my career.

Josh gave me a thoughtful look before nodding his head. "Sure. Go ahead and try it out. Don't let me down."

After the celebration dinner, my company announced the shortlist for Employee of the Year. My name was at the top. What followed was an invitation from the overseas headquarters to attend further training. It was a six-month program with a full scholarship, and I got to join several top-tier international medical architecture projects. It was the kind of opportunity that countless designers had dreamed of.In the past, I had turned down countless work trips and opportunities for career growth so I could drop everything whenever Matt called me.And now, I signed my name on the invitation without any hesitation. The pen glided across the paper, making a soft scratching sound. It was as if I had bid farewell to the person I used to be.Right before I left for overseas, Daniel asked me out for dinner at a Fenich restaurant overlooking a breathtaking river.Over time, Daniel had quietly woven himself into my life. He would send me copies of detailed eye-care tips whenever I worked late

Everyone was overjoyed at the celebration dinner, including me. I had a bit to drink and ended up slightly tipsy."Sienna, congratulations! You're the MVP!""Yeah, did you see that look on Claudia's face? She was so mad!"The air was lively as my colleagues gathered around to toast me.Just then, someone flung the door open. Matt came into sight, reeking of alcohol. His hair was a mess, and his tie was crooked. He didn't look a bit like his usual, composed self. The room fell silent.Matt walked straight over to me, his eyes bloodshot. He reached out his hand. "Sienna… Come home with me."Daniel, who was beside me, wanted to stop Matt, but I held him back.I stood up with a slight sway, but my eyes were clear. "Mr. Moore, are you in the wrong room? Ms. Litt is in the room next door."Matt acted as if he couldn't hear the sarcasm in my words. He fixed his gaze on me. His voice was filled with panic and desperation."I was wrong, Sienna. I realize my mistake now. I shouldn't ha

Two weeks later, the final bidding meeting for the Brightside Hospital expansion project was held as scheduled. The atmosphere was tense in the conference room.Claudia was dressed in a red business suit. With her impeccable makeup, she exuded an air of absolute confidence. Her proposal was, as always, full of grandiosity. It featured imported marble flooring, crystal chandeliers, and a massive fountain in the outpatient lobby."We're going for the high-end, luxurious medical experience, so patients get to feel truly distinguished," Claudia spoke eloquently on stage, accompanied by a flashy presentation. The review panel in the audience nodded frequently, especially Matt. As the representative of the largest investor, he had the right to overrule any decision.During the break, Matt found me in the pantry. Our encounter at the hospital that day had ended on a sour note. When he realized that I truly didn't care about his pain, he gave me a long look before leaving. Now, even th

Matt had been unusually irritable lately. He thought that by exerting pressure on me and cutting off my supply of materials, I would go running back to him in tears and beg for his forgiveness—just like I had in the past. But a full week went by. Not only did I not reach out to him, but he also heard that my project was progressing smoothly, using materials even better than originally planned.Late at night in the pub, Matt violently smashed his glass. Although the alcohol had dulled his senses, it amplified the inexplicable panic deep within him. He took his phone out and called me out of habit."I'm sorry. The number you've dialed…"It was obvious he was blocked on this number, too.Without any other choice, Matt asked the bartender for his phone. With trembling fingers, he keyed in the phone number he knew by heart. The phone rang twice before the call went through."Hello?"It wasn't my voice that answered. Instead, it was a cool, husky male voice. The clatter of a keyboard

I didn't have the spare time to consider Daniel's confession because the project had reached a critical stage. As the lead designer, I had already finalized agreements with several key material suppliers. However, just the day before the signing, they all suddenly backed out."Ms. Yale, I'm sorry. We're unable to supply this batch of imported eco-friendly paint.""Why? Didn't we already agree on it?" I clutched my phone as anxiety rippled through me.The supplier hesitated. "Ms. Yale, did you, by any chance, offend someone? Moore Corporation put out the word that anyone who dares to supply your project can kiss their future contracts with them goodbye."As I hung up, a chill swept over my body. This was Matt's revenge—direct, ruthless, and hard-hitting. He knew how important this project was to me, and he knew how to make me yield and beg him for help.Josh called me into his office and advised, "Sienna, there's no shame in swallowing our pride in business sometimes. You and Mr.

A deafening silence enveloped us.I stared at Daniel in shock. Then, I numbly turned my head around to face Matt. "What the hell are you talking about?" Matt strode over, wanting to grab me, but Daniel blocked him with his body.Matt glared at me darkly over Daniel's shoulder. "Sienna, I'm serious. Don't let him fool you. If he's even willing to give up on our friendship for you, he's definitely up to no good. He just wants to fool around with you."I gazed at his face, which I had grown so familiar with. I used to think he was the best-looking man in the world, and whenever he frowned, it would cause me such great distress. But now, watching him spew all this nonsense churned my stomach with repulsion. I felt a surge of nausea far worse than my allergies.I stepped out from behind Daniel and looked straight into Matt's eyes.My voice was calm. "Matt, it takes one to know one. All your accusations are projections. I don't know whether Dr. Ziegler is a creep or not. But all I kn
