Chapter 9

Author: Angelica1
Tina abruptly stopped in her tracks, suddenly wheeling on Henry with an icy glare as he kept carrying Rory.

"You never once cared about Sophie ever since she was born," she sneered coolly. "How did you find the audacity to accuse me here?"

While Henry was stumped, Linda promptly leaped in, as understanding as ever.

"How could you say that? Unlike you, Henry's always busy with work and does not goof off at home like you. He can't help if he's neglected Sophie a little. If anything, you should be understanding instead of blaming him.

"And see? He loves children—why would he really neglect Sophie? Shouldn't you be reflecting on yourself instead?"

Not only was she sucking up to Henry, but she was also throwing barbs at Tina for spoiling Sophie, which was why Henry did not favor her.

Tina wheeled on her with a piercing glare and warned darkly, "You don't get to talk here."

Tears promptly welled up in Linda's eyes as she leaned on Henry while shooting Tina a wounded look. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to butt in… I just feel bad for Henry, and I couldn't stand this misunderstanding."

It only left Tina feeling further disgust. "Sometimes, I really wonder how much trash an old bag like you can take on."

"Tina!"

Henry glared at Tina right then, a coolness showing over his handsome face.

"It's alright. Don't get upset for my sake." Linda tugged on Henry's sleeve, suddenly a mediator.

For Tina's part, she was not bothered to stay, and she continued inside since the competition was very important to her.

She would not even have talked to them if Henry had not mentioned her dearest Sophie.

She headed to the lounge to get some coffee, since she only napped for a few hours and it was just fifteen minutes before the competition.

Nearby, Linda was watching.

"Tina."

Seeing no one else was around, she entered and greeted Tina as if it was perfectly natural.

Tina ignored her and headed straight to the cabinet to get a cup.

Behind her, Linda was eyeing her hand—the same long, slender hand that effortlessly sketched designs that could take anyone's breath away.

Her eyes flashed, and she went over to get herself a cup as well.

Tina continued to ignore her as she brewed herself an americano with the coffee maker.

When it was done and she was just about to reach in for her cup, Linda suddenly reached out and jammed her finger on the button.

She could not resist smiling as scalding water splashed down. She could already imagine Tina's right hand being scalded and taken out of commission—or better yet, disabled for life—so that she could not even lift a pen!

However, her smile froze in the next instant, as she did not expect Tina to withdraw her hand just before the water could reach her.

She was so quick that no more than droplets reached her.

Even as Linda clawed at her in reflex to hold her in place, she missed again as Tina sidestepped her, knocking her on the shoulder as she moved.

Caught off guard, Linda stumbled and reached out instinctively to catch her balance. But in her panic, she pressed the same button by accident while knocking off the cup from under the dispenser.

Boiling water splashed squarely over her right hand, leaving her with a burning agony that cut into the bone.

"Argh!!!"

Even as she let out a blood-curdling scream, she was so stunned that it took her seconds to turn off the water with a shaking hand.

"Mommy!!!"

Rory appeared out of nowhere, and seeing that Linda was hurt, she screamed as she turned and ran to Henry, sobbing, "Daddy… Daddy…"

Henry was busy with a call, but he quickly hung up and dropped to a crouch, scooping her up as he coaxed her. "What's wrong, Rory?"

"Hngh…" Rory kept sobbing. "Tina burned Mommy's hand…"

Henry's face dropped, and he dashed toward the lounge with Rory still in his arms.

There were others who heard the commotion and wanted a peek, but Henry's glare left them stunned, too terrified to move another step.

Once inside the lounge, Henry quickly closed the door behind him.

"Henry…" Tears welled up in Linda's eyes, her voice raspy as she was clearly in a lot of pain.

Hearing the endless grief in Linda's voice as she called his name, Henry shot Tina an icy glare even as he hurried to Linda's side.

Holding her arm in place, he splashed cold water over Linda's red, swelling hand.

"Ahhh!!!" Linda gasped in pain, her lips pursed and trembling, looking ever so miserable.

"Just hold on."

Pain showed all over Henry's face even as he tenderly comforted Linda.

However, the more he did, the more tears welled up in Linda's eyes.

Tina naturally refused to watch the drama queen's performance and turned, striding outside.

She actually felt nothing knowing that Linda was hurt.

And she certainly was no saint either—if she had not moved aside quick enough, it would have been her hand scalded instead of Linda's.

"Stop right there!" Henry bellowed after her nonetheless—how could she not feel guilty at all after hurting Linda?!

As Tina ignored him and continued outside, he promptly let go of Linda and strode up to Tina, seizing her viciously by the wrist and pulling her back violently.

At the same time, he snarled, "How could you be so vile?! Scalding Linda's hand?! Don't you know that she needs it?!"

Tina looked up at Henry, smirking—so he was pinning the blame on her without a care.

In the past, she would have been devastated after he did the same thing time and time again.

She would worry that Henry would misunderstand and despise her, which was why she would always try to defend herself.

However, that man took a side from the very start and would turn a blind eye to the truth.

Now, Tina only found her past self ever so foolish.

Meeting Henry's threatening glare, she laughed. "You're accusing me? Then where's your evidence?"

The accuser must always present evidence to back up their proof, and there were no cameras in the lounge.

If anything, that was the reason why Linda had so boldly tried to scald Tina's hand with the hot water dispenser.

Be that as it may, seeing that Tina was denying it, Rory promptly hugged Henry's leg, bawling out loud, "No, Daddy! I saw it! Tina threw hot water on Mommy! Hngh… And Mommy taught me to always apologize if I did something wrong! Why won't you apologize, Tina?"

"Don't cry. Daddy believes you."

Henry comforted Rory for a moment before wheeling on Tina, his visage cold as he snapped, "There! Rory's words are evidence! She's just a five-year-old child—she'd never lie!"

At the ward, Mrs. Smith watched as John and Tina entered, holding hands. She fought back her emotions that Henry left flaring, focusing instead on John. "How are you doing? Are you alright?""I'm fine." John smiled. "It's just some minor burns, and it won't be a bother. How about you?""I'm fine."Seeing that they were all unscathed, John told his assistant to get all three of them discharged. After being informed that they had woken up, the cops came to get their statements and told them about their investigation. The fire had been put out because the firefighters were summoned in time, and it did not spread to the neighboring units. They then informed them that it was Linda who had started the fire.Tina had a feeling that it was arson, since she had smelled gasoline last night, but was surprised that Linda had managed to get out of prison to cause further trouble. She scowled at the thought of the close brush with death last night—Linda was really a walking time bomb."Hav

"It's okay, Mommy. I'll blow on it, and it won't hurt anymore."It was the way she and Sophie cared for each other, and Tina was now doing it to John. The nurse panicked as she came to her senses. "I'm sorry, Mr. Levine! Did I hurt you?"She was already on her toes as she was in the presence of bigwigs, since mishandling this would make them angry."It's alright. It's not your fault, " John told the nurse without looking at her, his gaze at once loving as he watched Tina.Seeing that she appeared pained because he was hurt, he felt a sweet sensation inside—as if the pain on his arm did not matter. All he could think about was the joy he felt amid the pain

"Mr. Barnes, I'm afraid most of the tissue in your leg is damaged extensively. Amputation might even be necessary."Even as the doctor explained, he had no idea how Henry had managed to get out of bed with how badly his leg was burned, when it was virtually impossible to keep it.Andy's face dropped in shock, and he bellowed at once, "Do you even know what you're saying?! It doesn't matter what you do—you have to save his leg!"He could not even begin to imagine how Henry would feel or endure after being fawned over since he was a child!"We will do our best," the doctor said, though he was not feeling confident at all.He had taken Henry's case and referred it to specialists nationwide on a video conference, but that was still everyone's conclusion.Henry knew that full well, as no doctor would take his treatment lightly. His gaze turned gloomy even as he looked downward at his own leg—amputation meant he would become a cripple. After hurting Tina so much in the past, he did n

Henry rushed up, intent on getting the truth."Henry Barnes!"That was when Mrs. Smith snapped before he could catch up, and he turned. "Mama Orange.""Mom." Tina stopped too and was going to Mrs. Smith when she shook her head, gesturing with her chin for Tina to leave. "I'm fine."Seeing that, Tina nodded. "I'll check on John. He saved us, but I'm worried.""Go on," Mrs. Smith said, while reaching out to hold Henry by the wrist.Henry was still too shocked and wanted to question Tina, but he did not dare to shake Mrs. Smith away and turned to level a pleading look at

"Tina!"Seeing Tina standing there unscathed, Henry's eyes were red as he strode up and wrapped his arms tightly around her, excited as he had almost lost her.He rested his chin on her head, his pounding heart finally at ease.Thank goodness his Tina was alright! He moved too quickly for Tina to avoid him. Her expression turned cool as soon as he touched her, and she pushed against his chest in distaste. "Let go of me!"However, his arms were vines that clung tightly to her to feel her warmth. "Just let me hold you, okay?" he pleaded, refusing to let go.Just remembering her lying in the middle of the fire barely breathing left him feeling traumatized. He did not dare to think that he would have lost Tina and Mrs. Smith if he had not gone there…He clung so tightly he wanted her to be inside her, and only then that he would feel a sense of reality."What's gotten into you this time?! Henry knew that he must not panic now—it would take the firefighters at least fifteen minutes to arrive, and Tina and Mrs. Smith would not survive in that violent blaze. He knocked on a first floor unit and warned them about the fire, then told them to contact the building management and evacuate the building. Then, he bathed himself in their cold shower while still in his clothes and rushed upstairs to Tina's unit without hesitation. The blaze was so violent he could feel the heat as soon as he arrived on Tina's floor. His guts seemed to clench at the thought of Tina and Mrs. Smith being in there.Still, he quickly grabbed the fire extinguisher in the hallway and emptied it to put out the fires which had spread outside. Then, he struck the door with the fire extinguisher, which was already burned to some extent, and took little effort to break it open.Throwing away the fire extinguisher, he took off his coat and held it over his head before charging in."Tina! As night arrived, Linda drove to Maple Park in Bob's car under the cover of darkness, stopping at the parking lot opposite Tina's block. She sat in the car, her glare venomous as she watched Tina and Mrs. Smith go upstairs, and she kept watching their window until the lights were off. After that, she waited for another hour to make sure they were asleep before getting out of the car and taking out a gas tank that was half her weight.Amid the silence, she carried the can upstairs despite the difficulty. Then, she pried open the front door quietly, sneaking in and quietly opening it.Once she poured the tank's contents all over the living room on the wooden floor, the strong scent of gasoline filled the room. With a third of the tank left, she poured what remained outside the main bedroom and the secondary bedroom, and then outside the front door. She then shut the door, cutting off any path to escape for Tina and Mrs. Smith! With her work done, she whipped out her lighter and ig

Henry was reading the medical report, while a disheveled Linda stayed crouched nearby, mumbling to herself. The report claimed that the abuse in prison had led to her mental breakdown, and specialists diagnosed her with severe psychosis, suggesting a transfer to a mental asylum.Henry then looked up, watching as Linda laughed one moment and cried the next, and she suddenly flailed his hands in the air while staring into thin air in panic.Through it all, she kept screaming incoherently."Don't come! Don't hurt me!""I didn't kill you! It wasn't me! Don't come after me!"Then, she was suddenly on her knees, her hands gently stroking something in the air as she murmured, "It's me! It's Mommy, Rory!"Suddenly, she broke into her run, and started hitting her head against the wall repeatedly, all while crying, "I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'm sorry!"She was hitting her head really hard and kept going anyway, as if the pain would not stop her.The prison guards had to hurry over to stop
