Chapter 2

작가: Summer
I struggled to my feet, enduring the sharp pain, and landed a hard slap right across Lucas's face.

"You actually hit me over her? Have you forgotten who paid off your massive student loans and covered your rent every single month, you ungrateful leech? We are over. Go be with your precious Chloe."

Lucas's smug face completely dropped the second I said the words "we are over."

"What is wrong with you, Serena? Chloe is like a sister to me, and you're going to marry into my family anyway. What's wrong with helping her out? I'm just trying to get you two to bond."

I smirked, ice in my voice. "Do I look like an idiot to you? We're broken up, so I don't need to bond with your family or accommodate your 'sister' anymore."

With that, I grabbed my coat and turned on my heel.

Losing his mind, Lucas spat venom at my back.

"Who else could ever put up with your self-righteous bullshit? All you ever do is flex your family's money and look down on everyone else. You're going to die alone!"

A dry laugh escaped my lips.

When Lucas was maxing out my black card on designer suits and custom Rolexes, he certainly didn't care about my "flexing."

I pulled out my phone, immediately revoked his authorized user card, and shot a quick text to my family's private banker to print out every single transaction statement.

He thinks my money is an insult? Perfect. He can pay back every single dime of that insult.

Still feeling uneasy, I went straight to the staff locker room, locked my smart ID badge inside my locker, and double-checked the keypad lock before leaving.

Surely Chloe wouldn't be able to get her hands on my credentials now.

That night, my phone rang. It was the ophthalmology department.

"Dr. Vance, your test results are back."

My vision had been getting increasingly blurry over the past few weeks, so I had gone in for a full workup.

Dr. Reynolds said, "Your congenital corneal dystrophy has rapidly progressed, causing severe detachment. We need to remove your corneas immediately."

I shuddered.

Noticing my distress, Dr. Reynolds added, "We're doing everything we can to place you on the priority donor waitlist, but you need the excision right away to prevent further infection."

After hanging up, I called my parents and explained the situation.

My mother immediately comforted me, promising that our family would use every resource to locate a matching donor.

I couldn't sleep a wink that night. The next morning, when I arrived at the hospital, I found my locker forced open. My smart ID badge was gone.

A dreadful feeling washed over me.

I immediately called the chief of surgery.

"I've made up my mind. I'll undergo the cornea removal today. I can't afford to wait any longer."

When I told my parents, they immediately arranged four top ophthalmologists to oversee the procedure.

Two hours later, I was lying on the operating table. As the anesthesia kicked in, I looked directly at the overhead camera and smiled.

Five hours later, I woke up to pitch blackness.

Panic surged through me as I reached out, but a warm hand caught mine.

"Serena, you're awake. How are you feeling? Are you in pain?"

Hearing my mother's trembling voice, relief washed over me.

"I'm alright, Mom. Everything's just dark right now."

My mother wrapped her arms around me gently.

"Don't worry, sweetheart. We've already reached out to global donor networks. The doctors said once we find a match, you can have the transplant in three months and fully recover."

I nodded. As she carefully helped me sip on a high-nutrient supplement drink, she asked softly, "Why were you in such a rush to do the surgery today?"

I paused, then smiled.

"I just wanted to get it over with before things got worse, so I can start recovering sooner."

She nodded in understanding. By evening, I asked if I could get some fresh air.

The doctor agreed, provided I returned within an hour for a dressing change.

Supported by a nurse, I walked slowly toward the hospital courtyard garden.

I tried to shrink back into the cold metal frame of the chair, but the coarse ropes were wrapped tightly around my wrists and chest, binding me so completely that I couldn't move an inch.Chloe stepped forward, her eyes gleaming with dark amusement as she grabbed my hair and pulled my head back, forcing me to face her.I struggled against the restraints and tried to warn them. "Chloe, you're insane! We look completely different. There is physically no way you can just replace me and live my life. Do you honestly think my parents, my colleagues, and the police are all fools who won't notice?"Chloe pinched my jaw hard, a sickening, triumphant smirk dancing across her face."Since you're going to die in a few minutes anyway, Serena, I don't mind letting you in on our little secret," she purred softly, her breath cold against my skin. She turned her head slightly and motioned toward Lucas. "Show her."Lucas reached into a heavy duffel bag on the concrete floor and pulled out two pale, hyp

A month later, the thick gauze bandages covering my face were finally unraveled, layer by layer. The brilliant sunlight streamed into the room, blinding me for a brief second before my vision sharpened into absolute clarity. After a battery of comprehensive tests, Dr. Reynolds confirmed that my corneal graft had integrated flawlessly, and he officially signed off on my discharge papers.I spent the next week resting at my parents' quiet estate, rediscovering the pure joy of seeing the world again. With the semester winding down, my department administrator sent out a notification requesting that all doctors and residents retrieve their personal belongings from the staff dormitories, as the quarters were undergoing mandatory renovations for the upcoming academic year. The following afternoon, I drove to the medical campus myself to clear out my locker and personal desk. As soon as I walked through the familiar, sunlit hallways of the residential building, several fellow residents immedi

That evening, my phone rang. My private investigator called with a breakthrough: the forensic team had successfully restored the corrupted surveillance files from my family's estate.I immediately forwarded the recovered digital evidence to the detective leading the homicide investigation. Within hours, law enforcement moved in, and Chloe was taken into custody right from the hospital staff lounge. The restored footage from my family's private study was undeniable. It clearly captured Lucas's mother—the live-in housekeeper—sneaking into the private office, opening the secure safe with a stolen passcode, and handing over my spare override keys, backup smart ID badge, and administrative access tokens directly to Chloe.Furthermore, when the police executed a search warrant at Chloe's apartment, forensic investigators made a chilling discovery in her closet: a hyper-realistic, medical-grade silicone mask sculpted precisely to match my facial features. Combined with my stolen smart ID badg

I immediately frowned, my brow furrowing in deep disgust at the familiar sound of his voice."What are you doing here?" I demanded, my tone icy and unyielding. "Get out. I don't want to see you."Lucas scoffed, taking a few heavy steps closer to my hospital bed, his tone dripping with condescension."Stop throwing a tantrum already, Serena," he said, rolling his eyes as if I were being entirely unreasonable. "How can you be so petty as to cancel my card just because I accidentally nudged you earlier? What do you want from me? A written apology?"I was genuinely dumbfounded by his sheer audacity. I hadn't even brought up how he shoved me into the medical cart or how he stole my smart ID badge, yet he dared to barge into my private room and question me with such unearned arrogance."Didn't you say that using my money is a humiliation?" I retorted coldly, turning my blind gaze toward his direction. "Didn't you claim that I flex my wealth and treat you without respect? Fine. I'm respecting

"I'm fine, Mom. See? I'm completely fine. Dr. Reynolds said everything looks good, so please don't cry."My mother tightened her grip on my hand, her knuckles white with tension."Serena, your father and I have treated you like gold your entire life. You’ve never had to suffer this kind of humiliation before. Why on earth didn't you tell us sooner? I can't believe those people actually dared to lay a hand on my daughter like that. I am going to tear this whole hospital apart until I get to the bottom of this!"I reached up blindly, holding my mom close and gently patting her back."I'm sorry for making you worry so much, Mom."She wrapped her arms around me, her voice trembling softly into my hair. "You foolish girl, what are you apologizing for? From now on, you don't keep a single thing from us. I will stand behind you no matter what happens. I've already put our lead corporate counsel on retainer. I am not letting anyone who insulted you or put their hands on you off the hook. Not a

Immediately, someone in the crowd gasped, "Ah, look at her eyes!"At that moment, a collective hush fell over the courtyard. The police officers and the angry onlookers froze, completely stunned. My eyes were pale, cloudy, and entirely devoid of light—a stark, unmistakable sign that I had completely lost my sight.Someone nearby muttered in disbelief, "Wait, if she’s totally blind, how could she possibly perform a complex surgical procedure, let alone flee the hospital afterward? That doesn't make any sense."The nurse, sensing the sudden shift in energy, immediately stepped in front of me, shielding my fragile body from the hostile crowd with a look of fierce concern."Dr. Vance, are you alright? Did they hurt you?" she asked, her hands hovering nervously near my shoulders.I frowned, wincing slightly as a sharp pain flared up behind my brow. "My eyes are throbbing."The nurse gripped my arm tightly to steady me. "I'm going to call Dr. Reynolds right away so he can examine you. Please
