ASHER

I could think of a million better ways to spend my time and having to listen to Sebastian whine about Alexander for the third time this week was certainly not one of them.

I only had myself to blame because I should’ve known better than to take him seriously when he texted me to say he was in a ‘crisis.’

Especially since it wasn’t the first time this week.

I watched him, my eyes swinging back and forth, as he paced the length of his living room, the speed of it almost making me dizzy.

ELLIOTThe relief that hit me was so overwhelming it almost made me dizzy.I hadn’t even realized how terrified I’d been until that moment. My legs carried me closer to the bed automatically.Dad remained asleep, his breathing slow and even beneath the oxygen cannula resting beneath his nose.I let out a short breath.A laugh almost escaped me then. It wasn’t because anything was remotely funny, but because all I could think was I’d been so happy to see my Dad before. What did it say that the happiest I felt seeing my dad was when he was lying in a hospital bed fighting for his life?I stared at him for a long moment.Despite everything that had occurred between us, all I felt right then was sharp, almost painful relief.I swallowed hard.“I’ll… wait outside,” I murmured quietly.Neither Margaret nor Asher stopped me.I stepped out into the hallway quickly before the pressure in my chest exploded. The room suddenly felt too small, too suffocating. Everything felt unbearable.I didn’t

ELLIOTHospitals have always terrified me. It wasn’t in the normal way people feared them. It wasn’t because of the needles or the blood or the sharp antiseptic smell that clung to the air. It wasn’t even because of the tears and the sadness or how depressing they were.It was because, to me, hospitals signified loss. To me, they meant pain, suffering.Every hallway felt haunted. Every waiting room carried painful memories that I spent years trying to forget. But now I was back in one again. My stomach churned violently as Asher parked the car in the hospital parking lot.The entire drive there had been a blur.I barely remembered calling him after hanging up with Margaret.I only remembered hearing his voice immediately sharpen with concern. Only remembered him immediately saying he was coming with me.He didn’t ask and for once I was grateful for his demanding nature.Because I didn’t think I could do this alone. Now he glanced toward me from the driver’s seat, his brows furrowed

ELLIOT“Stop doing that,” Elsa said suddenly.I frowned. “Doing what?”“Stop blaming yourself for everything that's happened. It's not your fault.”“I’m not blaming myself.”“Yes, you are.”I scoffed lightly. “How would you even know? It's not like you can see what I'm thinking.”“You always get this look on your face when you start spiraling internally,” she said. “Your lips do this weird thing.”“My lips do not do a weird thing.”“They absolutely do,” Houston confirmed.Traitor.I rolled my eyes and sank deeper into the couch.Everything fell quiet for a moment. Then Houston spoke softly.“How’s Asher?”The tension in my chest loosened slightly at the mention of him.“He’s okay,” I said quietly. “Or trying to be. He keeps telling me everything is going to be fine.”“And do you believe that?” Elsa asked. The question hung heavily in the air. It was one that I’d never really given much thought to. Maybe it was because I was too busy ignoring everything else.I swallowed.“I don’t know

ELLIOT“I think we should egg his car.”I looked up from where I was sitting cross-legged on Elsa’s couch.“What?”“The car,” Lucas repeated calmly as he bit into a fry. “Your dad’s car. We should egg it. Maybe slash a tire too if we’re feeling creative.”“I don't think that's a good idea,” Houston said immediately from beside him. "That's a crime, isn't it?"Lucas looked offended. “You people never let me express myself. You never take my ideas seriously.”“It’s because your solutions always involve vandalism,” Elsa replied.Lucas shrugged. “Vandalism isn't always a bad idea. I would say it builds character.”I snorted despite myself. The sound surprised even me.It’d been a while since I genuinely laughed. Two weeks to be precise. It's been two weeks since I left the house. It isn't as terrible as I imagined it would be, mostly thanks to Elsa accommodating me.It hasn't been bad staying with her, if you ignored how anal she was about certain things like how certain plates were washe

ASHERSebastian stared at me for a long moment. “Did you leave out of solidarity with Elliot or out of guilt that Simon didn’t kick you out too?”I mulled over that for a second.“A little bit of both, I guess,” I said finally. “I couldn’t stay comfortably in that house while Elliot was squatting somewhere.”He tilted his head. “But it isn’t your fault Elliot has a bad relationship with his father. You leaving home isn’t going to magically fix that.”“I know. But it isn’t just because of that. I also think that Mum and I needed space to figure things out. Things aren’t going to change if I stay. She’ll still think of me as her little kid. She doesn’t want to accept that I’m all grown now.”Sebastian’s expression softened. “And your mum? How did she take you leaving the house? Not well I suppose.”I rubbed my face tiredly. For the first time since leaving home, I finally allowed myself to think about what I’d actually done.I moved out. Just like that.No teary goodbyes with Mum huggin

ASHERSebastian opened the door, took one look at me standing there with my bags, and immediately let out a long sigh.I found it quite insulting. He was acting like something unpleasant just showed up at his doorstep.“Why are you acting like that? I already told you I was coming.”“Well, I didn’t think you were serious,” he said, folding his arms. “Besides, that’s exactly the problem. You told me.”I snorted. “What, did you expect me to beg?”He pursed his lips. “Not really. But a little ‘please’ would have sufficed.”“You’d have to wait a long time because I’m not doing that. That’s not the nature of our relationship.”“Oh, I already know how one-sided our relationship is. You don’t need to tell me.”I rolled my eyes. “Your mum made a mistake when she chose James as your middle name. It should’ve been ‘dramatic’ instead.”“Haha, very funny. You didn’t wait for my answer before coming but I’ll tell you now.” He smiled sweetly. “The answer is no.”I raised an eyebrow. “No?”“No,” he
