ASHER

Life has a way of surprising you.

Of giving you things you didn’t think you actually needed.

For as long as I could remember, I was alright with not having a ‘complete’ family. It was just my Mum and I, and I was fine with that.

But now, watching the scene playing out in front of me, I realized maybe having an additional person wasn’t so bad.

I leaned against the kitchen counter, arms crossed, watching as Mum moved around the space like she owned it. Well, I supposed she now did.

ELLIOTI froze as I realized the words that just came out of my mouth. I just said I was in love with Asher. It was impulsive but as I probed my mind, I realized I meant it.Dad stiffened too. “You can’t possibly mean that. You don’t know what you’re saying.”“I really don’t care if you believe me or not.”He shook his head. “Your mum would be very disappointed in you if she could see you right now. What do you think she’ll have to say about you dating your stepbrother?”I tensed. The blood in my veins turned to ice. “Don’t you dare drag my mother into this. Now you care about her ‘cos it fits your agenda, right?”I ignored the doubt creeping into my mind. The one that told me Dad was right and my mum would be disappointed in me.Instead, I forced myself to remember that day at the cemetery. The one where he told me that Mum would want me to be happy. Because it was the truth. That was who my mother was. Not the person Dad was painting her to be.“You don’t even know her,” I went on.

ELLIOTHe folded his arms too, mirroring me. “And just what do you think I know?”I lifted my chin slightly, not willing to back down. “That Asher and I are dating.”His nostrils flared slightly. “So, it’s true.”“Yes. But you know that. Otherwise you wouldn’t be in my room.”He sighed. “When Margaret told me what happened, I didn’t want to believe it. I told her she probably misinterpreted things. But judging by your shameless behaviour right now, I guess she was right afterall.”My hands clenched into fists as I tried not to let his words affect me. “What do you want me to say? Do you want me to lie? Wouldn’t that be more ‘shameless?’”“I expect you not to date your brother,” he said tightly. “But I guess that’s too difficult for you to do.”“Asher isn’t my brother,” I said calmly.“Don’t be stupid.”“He’s not my brother. We’re not related by blood.”“Just because you’re not related by blood doesn’t mean it’s right for you to date him. He’s your stepbrother.”I shrugged. Deep down,

ELLIOTMy life right now was an epitome of what it looked like when a tornado came and went.A tornado didn’t destroy things at once. First, there was the warning, a strange pressure in the air, a feeling that something was going to go wrong long before it arrived. Then came the violence of it. Chaotic, loud and impossible to hold back once it already started. All you had to do was wait until it was finished. After that was the wreckage. That was the worst part. The silence, the debris scattered everywhere, the awful realization that you’ve lost everything, the knowledge that the damage was irrevocable and nothing could ever return to the way it was. That was what my life felt like right now.I was standing in the middle of the wreckage, unsure how to put everything back together.I wished I could take everything back. I wished time travel existed so I could go back to before Margaret found us. I’d lock the door or maybe not even kiss Asher at all. Maybe I’d suggest we go out of the

ASHERShe laughed but there was no humour in it. “What else is there to explain? You’ve said it all.”“I understand that this might be a little surprising but—”“A little surprising?” she echoed. She looked at me like she didn’t recognize who was standing in front of her anymore. “Asher, you’re dating your brother! Elliot is your brother!”I flinched. My hands slowly clenched into fists.“Elliot is not my brother. I never saw him as one.”“It doesn’t matter if you see him as one or not. He’s still your brother.”“We’re not related by blood.”“It doesn’t make this any less wrong. God…” she shook her head in despair. Her words made my chest tighten.“We’re not doing anything wrong,” I said defensively. “Stop acting like—”Elliot tapped my shoulder with his, forcing me to keep quiet.“Margaret,” he started.Mum’s attention shifted to him. Before he could get any other word out, Mum shook her head.“And you… your father would be so disappointed in you. As if you haven’t disappointed him e

ASHERThis was a nightmare. The worst possible thing that could happen.Of all the ways I thought my mum would find out about Elliot and I’s relationship, this wasn’t one of them. For a long moment, nobody moved. It didn’t even feel like anyone was breathing.I stared at my mum, my eyes wide. She stood frozen in the doorway, one hand resting on the doorknob. Her eyes flickered between us rapidly. She looked like she was replaying what she’d just seen. Like she was trying to comprehend what she’d just seen. My mind raced as I thought of what I was going to say to her. But I already knew there was no explaining this away. She saw everything there was to see.Elliot was still half on top of me, my hand was still in his hair. She saw us kissing.I wasn’t going to treat her like she was stupid. The look on her face made it painfully obvious that she understood exactly what she’d seen.Elliot recovered fast. He jerked away from me so fast he stumbled slightly as he moved off the bed to st

ELLIOTI glanced up at him sharply, the action almost giving me whiplash with how fast it was.“All of a sudden? Where is that coming from?”He shrugged. “Since we’re on the topic of parents…”I pursed my lips as I thought of the answer to his question.Did I hate Margaret? At first, I thought I did. When my father first married her, when she first stepped into this house with Asher, I was convinced I hated her. I had such a visceral reaction every time I saw her that for a long time, I thought it was hate. Or maybe I convinced myself it was, just to feel less guilty. But the more I got to know her, the more time I spent with her, I realized I didn’t hate her. At least not entirely.“No,” I replied. “I don’t hate your mum.”Asher raised an eyebrow. “Really?”“What’s with that reaction? Do you want me to hate her?”“No, of course not. I’m just surprised, that’s all. You always act like her very presence bothers you.”I sighed, because he was not wrong. “Yes. But that was before. And ev
