Chapter 3

Author: Tonya Hugh
“Henry, this is what you meant by being busy?”

My throat felt like it was coated with blood.

“How did you get here?”

Henry instinctively stepped in front of Kate, as if I were some kind of monster.

I gave a cold laugh. “That’s exactly what I should be asking you.”

He frowned, his tone as impatient as ever.

“Katie broke up with her girlfriend and was heartbroken. She said she wanted to experience being a mother.

“I was only trying to help her.”

“Help her?”

My voice was on the verge of shattering.

“Henry, where exactly do I stand in your life?”

Kate walked over and shot Henry a glare.

“Henry, why are you talking to your wife like that?”

She came over and grabbed my hand.

“Anya, I just wanted a child. Since we’re close, I asked Henry to be a sperm donor.

“You don’t mind, do you?

“Henry and I have always just been best buddies. Don’t worry, we never crossed the line.”

I laughed coldly and shook her off, trembling with anger.

Right. They hadn’t crossed the line. They’d only slept together.

“Henry, let’s get a divorce.”

I turned around and closed my eyes. Without waiting for his answer, I went home and started packing.

I was halfway through when Henry rushed back. He grabbed my hand.

“After all these years, are you really going to throw everything away?

“You’ve never had a job. How are you going to survive out there?

“That’s none of your business.” I shook him off.

He suddenly pulled me into his arms and wiped my tears away.

“Honey, I was wrong. This was my fault. For the sake of everything we’ve had, can we not get divorced?”

“Then make her get rid of the baby and send her away!”

“Fine.”

He paused for a moment before agreeing.

I grabbed his collar tightly. “I want you to give me a child. Now. Right now.”

He stared at me for a long time before finally agreeing.

“Okay.”

I kept him at home and made love to him day and night.

Endless supplements and countless folk remedies, and finally three months later, I was pregnant.

Henry finally seemed relieved, as though he had completed a task.

When he looked at the baby, however, there was none of the tenderness or joy I had expected.

He wasn’t particularly mean to me. He still accompanied me to my prenatal check-ups and bought my supplements promptly.

Even when I cried in the middle of the night, he would hand me tissues and water.

I could tell he was only going through the motions, though. He was physically with me, but his heart was always elsewhere.

Then, when I was five months pregnant, he started going out frequently again. He stopped answering my calls.

One day, he left while I was asleep. I followed him to the old family residence.

Kate’s stomach was huge. She was wearing his shirt and lounging on the sofa, eating ice cream.

Lately, Henry had never even let me touch his shirts.

Right then, he gently took the ice cream from her. Then he rubbed her legs.

“Only two bites. I can’t be with you these days. You’ve really been through a lot.”

I shoved the door open, my lips trembling uncontrollably.

“Didn’t you say you were going to get rid of the baby? Henry, you lied to me!”

The moment he saw me, the veins in Henry’s forehead bulged. He finally snapped.

“Anya, have you had enough? You said you wanted me to stay with you, and I did. You said you wanted a child, and I gave you one.

“Kate is carrying twins, and she’s already so far along. Do you know how much it hurts me to watch her walk through the security cameras?

“They’re both my children. Can’t you just accept them?”

“But you promised me!” I clenched my fists tightly.

Kate curled her lips and deliberately stroked her stomach.

“Anya, my two babies have outgrown my clothes. Henry’s shirts fit perfectly.

“Even the doctor says I’m amazing, carrying two at once. Honestly, I think I could still do somersaults.

“Henry is the one making a fuss. He won’t let me ride a motorcycle or watch horror movies.

“But I’m not some delicate little girl. I’ve got plenty of strength.”

I finally lost control. I grabbed a vase and hurled it at her.

“You’re disgusting!”

“Katie, watch out!”

Henry suddenly stepped in front of her, glaring at me fiercely.

“How can you be so vicious? Do you know she’s carrying twins?

“Anya, I’ve supported you for all these years. If you can’t take it anymore, then get out.”

Nausea churned in my stomach. I wiped my mouth.

“Fine. I’ll leave!”

It felt as though every last bit of strength had been drained from me. I turned and left.

I knocked on the door of my best friend, Joyce. Crying, I told her everything that had happened.

She only kept frowning.

“Annie, I’m sorry to say this, but you’re being too unreasonable.

“Kate is a really nice person. She only asked Henry to help her have a child. Do you really need to react this strongly?”

I could hardly believe what I was hearing. “What did you say?”

“You’re being too cruel. You actually wanted Kate to get rid of the baby. That’s still a life.

“Since you got pregnant, she hasn’t fought you for anything, yet you’re still making such a fuss.”

She continued picking out gifts. “What do you think I should get Kate when she has the babies?”

It felt as though a ball choked my throat. I couldn’t say anything nor swallow it down.

Even my best friend of many years had taken Kate’s side.

After that day, Henry rarely came home.Occasionally, late at night, he would quietly come in and wrap his arms around me from behind. Then he would suddenly wake up, murmuring our daughter's name.I couldn't explain how I felt about it, so I simply pretended not to know. One weekend, unusually, he didn't go to the office. He cooked at home. When he saw me come out, he carefully reached for my hand.“I made Mexican food, your favorite. Do you want to try some?“Or is there anything else you'd like? I'll make it for you.”I shook my head and refused coldly, “No need.”I felt my way along the table, deliberately going around him. His hand dropped, his voice desolate. “Annie, I just wanted to do something. Can you please not shut me out?”I pressed my lips together.“There's no point.”Henry grabbed me tightly, his chest rising and falling heavily.“There is. As long as it can make you happy, I'll do anything.”I shook my head. I didn't want to keep going around in circles

Henry said nothing as he carried me into the bedroom. His breath brushed against my skin. His voice sounded as though each word had to be forced out.“Annie, we can still have another one.”I curled my lips into an unreadable smile.“Have another one? How exactly? By forcing me?”I could probably imagine how pale his face was at that moment.Henry swayed unsteadily before finally choking out in a low voice, “I never meant to…”After a long silence, he uttered, “Annie, get some rest.”He left, his footsteps almost soundless.Outside, the two children were crying and making a fuss. Then came the sound of a vase shattering.“Daddy! I want Mommy!”“Give Mommy back to me!”“That's right! Is Mommy locked up because of that horrible woman inside?”“Daddy, I hate you! I want Mommy!”Suddenly, there was a loud crash, followed by Henry's furious roar.“Enough! Go back to your rooms.”After a long while, everything finally fell silent. It wasn't until the afternoon that Henry c

Henry was silent for a long time. Finally, he reached out and touched my forehead. His voice was hoarse as he said, “Honey, I’ll make this right.”His hands trembling, he called Kate.“Where are you?”She answered with a laugh, “I’m racing. I’ve won several races.“What? You miss me?”Henry took a deep breath. “Let me ask you, did you pull the doctor from Annie’s care home?“And why did you pretend to be blind? Why did you frame Annie?”There was silence on the other end for a moment before she suddenly laughed.“Oh dear Henry, what are you talking about? I don’t understand. Aren’t we just like buddies? Why would I frame Anya?”“Kate.”His voice dropped. “I’m giving you one more chance. Tell me the truth.”She let out a soft laugh and admitted it.“I was weak back then, and the baby wasn’t strong either, so I had the doctor called back.“Besides, you said she was healthy. It wouldn’t make a difference whether there was a doctor or not.“As for her eyes, I was just afraid

The next morning, Henry began pounding violently on my door.“Open the door, Annie. Open up!“I want to see you. I’m here to take you home.”Gradually, his voice weakened, and the pounding against the door grew fainter.I covered my ears. I blinked blankly, unfocused. In the end, he forced the door open. When he came closer, his footsteps stopped.“Anya, I’m here to take you home. I didn’t mean what I said yesterday.“Let Hal take you home, okay?”Hal.That was what I had called him when I first moved in to live with the Young family at the age of ten.In the end, he hadn’t protected me either. My fingers curled slightly at my sides as I continued to blink blankly.“Home?“So you can send me back to that care home and have me locked up again?“Or back to a home where you can throw me out whenever you want?”I bit my lip until it bled.“You know what? When you drove me away because of Kate, I sat alone in the park downstairs for the entire night.“I thought you would co

I knew he had seen it, and I didn’t stop him.His grip on the table tightened.Henry’s breathing became ragged.“What is this? Tell me.“You were capable of hurting Kate and the others before.“And now, just to keep me from seeing my child, you’re even cruel enough to curse your own daughter?“Anya, you don’t deserve to be the mother of my daughter!”His voice grew increasingly hoarse. By the end of it, he had torn the document apart. He lunged at me and gripped my hand so tightly it nearly broke. Pain shot through me, leaving my hand numb. I wrenched myself free and gave a cold, mocking laugh.“Don’t touch me!”He didn’t listen. He grabbed my shoulders again.“Tell me. Where did you hide my daughter? I’ll find her!“Anya, you’re so vicious. How could someone like you possibly raise my daughter?”Every word cut into me. I screamed with all the strength I had.“She’s dead!”I swung at him with all my strength, but my eyes saw nothing but darkness. In the end, my fingert

  • Unseeing, Unforgotten   Chapter 4

I left Joyce’s house and stood on the street. I realized I had nowhere to go. In a fit of spite, I went to a store to buy an ice cream, only to find that I didn’t even have ten dollars in my wallet.I sat in a park not far from home from dusk until dawn. When the baby moved, I silently went back home.Henry immediately grabbed me and looked me over carefully.“Where have you been? I looked for you all night.“You’re acting recklessly, and the child has to suffer with you.”I didn’t look at him. I simply held out my hand.“Your phone.”After hesitating for a moment, he handed it to me. I entered the passcode. My birthday. Wrong. Our wedding anniversary. Still wrong. He pressed his lips together.“0225.”Kate’s birthday. My fingers paused for a moment before I unlocked the phone and transferred five thousand dollars to myself.Henry’s pupils constricted. He handed me a card.“Here. Unlimited credit. Buy whatever you want.“Annie, stop running away from home.”I gripped
