Chapter 3

Author: Sweetie Moore
"Ruby, regardless of everything, Liam is your husband. It's not right for him to apologize to me. I've forgiven him already, so let's drop it," Wilson chimed in with a hurt tone before I could even speak.

He sounded like he was defending me, but I knew he was just trying to rile her up.

Ruby just scoffed.

"So what if he's my boyfriend? I'm always fair and don't play favorites. I'm worried that someone might hide behind the 'boyfriend' title to cause trouble.

"Liam, I'll ask you one more time, do you admit you were wrong?"

I almost laughed. "Yeah, I know I messed up."

I had messed up by not seeing who she really was sooner and not breaking things off with her to let Wilson have her. That's what I was truly thinking.

However, before I could say it out loud, Ruby snorted with satisfaction. "As long as you understand your mistake, that's enough. Considering you've just gotten out of jail and might be a bit out of it, Wilson and I will let it slide.

"You really should apologize to Wilson for all the help he gave you when you got out. It's the least you can do."

"There’s no need for formalities, Ruby. I was just doing what I should," Wilson said, pretending to be modest.

"You're too kind-hearted. However, I've made up my mind, so don't argue about it."

"......"

Ruby and Wilson were in perfect agreement on the phone, leaving me no chance to say anything before she hung up.

Soon enough, I figured out what Ruby had done. She had gone behind my back and transferred 30 thousand dollars from my card to Wilson.

When Ruby said yes to marrying me, I gave her my bank card PIN to prove how much I trusted her. She started using my card, and I allowed her to because I thought that we were family, and as the man, I should be the one to give more.

At first, she just bought things we needed for the house. However, when she saw I didn't make a fuss, she began treating herself to fancy clothes, expensive bags, and makeup that cost a pretty penny.

I made 4,500 dollars a month, but by the time the middle of the month rolled around, my bank account would be almost empty, and there wouldn’t even be enough to buy a meal. I brought it up with her a couple of times and Ruby got mad, saying I was criticizing her for spending too much. She said she didn't want to rely on me anymore and wanted to be her own boss.

She did cut back on her wild spending after that, but I noticed she still had a steady expense of three thousand dollars every month. I recently found out that it was for gifts for Wilson.

Ruby told me to pinch pennies, so much so that I couldn't even buy underwear that was ten dollars for three pairs, but she didn't think twice about buying Wilson socks that cost three hundred dollars. She talked about being thrifty while I wore the same patched-up shoes for two years, but she gave Wilson two pairs of fancy sneakers worth more than a thousand dollars in just one month. She said we needed to budget, counting every gram of food we cooked, but she spent a fortune on a birthday dinner with Wilson.

……

The more I thought about it, the sillier I felt. However, I knew that large money transfers had to be confirmed in person.

Ruby quickly sent me a text like she always did: [Verification code.]

I looked back at our old chats and couldn't remember when her messages to me had shrunk down to just those words.

She used to grumble about how annoying those codes were and asked me to get her a card linked to mine, but for some reason, I, who always did what she wanted, said no.

Looking back, I guess I was already trying to break free.

I laughed to myself and didn't bother replying. After I left work, I wrote up the divorce papers and, with the house deed in hand, headed to the nearest real estate office.

The house was a gift from my parents when we got married, picked out in Ruby's favorite neighborhood.

To make her happy, my parents had me put her name on the deed too. However, whenever they wanted to visit, Ruby would complain, and I would have to tell them I was too busy with work.

It looked like Ruby couldn't take it anymore. She fell apart. "Wilson, do you really think I don't have any evidence against you?" she asked. She walked up to the police, took a deep breath, and said each word with serious weight."I'm suing Wilson for moving company money around in secret and for fraud."Her move was so unexpected. Wilson, who had been all over the place just a second ago, looked like he had been hit by lightning. After what felt like forever, he snapped out of it, his expression manic."Ruby, are you out of your mind?"Wilson tried to go after her, but the cops were faster and pinned him down. That whole mess came out of nowhere. I never saw it coming. Wilson and Ruby were heading to court. Before, someone had secretly taken money from the company. At that time, the security cameras were being fixed, and without solid proof, we couldn't figure out who did it.Then, Ruby came forward with a piece of key evidence that linked back to the past, and soon, all sig

I rolled up my sleeve to show the ugly scars and burns from cigarette butts."Also, someone once broke this finger of mine."Ruby's eyes went wide, and she started to shake.Wilson rushed over and stood in front of me."Liam, please, help us. I'm too young. I don't want to go to jail."I was going to just walk away, but seeing them so scared and begging, I got an idea."Maybe I'll let you go."They heard me soften and almost relaxed. However, then they heard what I said next, and their hearts clenched tight again."I can only drop one charge, though. I can't have the cops come for nothing, and I don't want to get in trouble for a false alarm."You two figure out which charge you want gone."Wilson and Ruby locked eyes. Wilson spoke quickly, "Ruby, you know I'm still young. My life is just starting. If I go to jail, my life is over."Just hang in there. It's only for a few years. When you're out, Liam will still be there for you. And if not, I'll marry you, okay?"Ruby paus

Hope flickered in her eyes. I nodded, "That's true." Her eyes lit up, but before she could say more, I pulled out the signed divorce papers from my bag and handed them to her. "It’s a good thing we're already divorced." I made sure to show her where she had signed. "No more shared property, right? Your problems won't affect me," I said with a smirk. Ruby's eyes went wide, staring at the papers. She turned ghostly white. "Impossible, when did I...?" she stammered. "Remember the house sale? The third document," I reminded her. Her face lost all color. "You... You tricked me? Liam, I trusted you, how could you?" she said accusingly, trembling. I laughed softly, "Tricked you? You signed it yourself, didn't you? I showed you the whole contract, didn't I?"Wasn't it you who was so eager to call Wilson that you just signed everything and dumped all the problems on me?"If she had just cared a little bit about me back then, if she had just looked at what I gave her, none of that

I knew he would try to wiggle out of it, so I glanced at the lawyer. The lawyer got the hint and pulled out his phone. "You say the photo's fake, but what about the video?"Ruby was closest and saw the video first. She went white as a ghost. She didn't wait for the lawyer to show everyone. She grabbed it and hit delete.I laughed a little. "Go ahead and delete it. I've got plenty more proof to show you can't get away with this."I normally didn't push people this hard. However, Ruby got it. She knew I had been ready for that before it all started. Fighting me wasn't going to work out for her.She shot me an angry look, full of frustration. "Liam, you've really let me down."Then, Wilson seemed to have an idea. He whispered something to Ruby, and her eyes sparkled with hope.Wilson put on a friendly face and got the okay from the cops. Ruby pulled out her phone and dialed.I knew who she was calling — her boss.At first, her boss looked down on Ruby. I went to great lengths t

The room went silent when the officer finished talking.Wilson looked like he had been caught red-handed.Ruby was flustered but tried to smile. "Officer, that case was clear-cut, and it's been ages. Wasn't it closed already?"The officer was all business. "There's new evidence that changes things. It's pretty convincing."And someone's questioning the case. No matter how long it's been, we need to look into it."Ruby wanted to argue, but the officers were firm.I had guessed Ruby would try to talk her way out, so I had my lawyer ready with a plan the moment we filed the lawsuit.I wouldn't have gone to court if I wasn't sure we would win.Wilson was the first to get his wits about him.He glanced around, then looked at me with a hurt expression."Liam, you're behind this, aren't you? I know you've got it in for me. Just come at me, but leave Ruby out of it."Whatever happens, this lawsuit's going to mess with Ruby's career at the company."When Wilson said that, Ruby came
