Chapter 4

Penulis: Metal Chang
Mom and Dad told me to reflect on why I had spoken to them in such a harsh tone.

Previously, I used to be terrified of being locked in here and making a mistake that would disappoint them. But I now understood that I was never the one at fault. It was just that they were used to holding power over me.

Lying on the cold floor, I scrolled through funny videos my classmates had shared in the group chat, then fell asleep without a care.

I didn't know how much time passed before the ringing of my phone woke me up.

It was Mom. Her voice was soft, but her tone was accusing as she said, "Aster, Ms. Decker explained to us that she bought the dress for you, so it was indeed a misunderstanding on our part. But why didn't you speak up in your own defense?

"Did you want us to feel guilty on purpose? Selene was so upset, thinking she had caused us to misunderstand you, that she didn't even eat breakfast. To help her feel better, we're taking her on a trip abroad.

"Spend these next few days at home alone and really think about what you've done." Mom paused, then added, "We'll bring you a gift when we come back."

After hanging up the phone, I couldn't help but laugh. What was that last remark supposed to be? An olive branch? Comfort? Or compensation born from guilt?

Whatever it was, it didn't matter anymore.

The moment William tore my dress, whatever remained of my hope for this family vanished completely. Perhaps it was for the best.

Actually, it was good that they weren't here, as it saved me a lot of trouble. In the last few days I had left, I could quietly erase every trace of myself from this house.

12 days before leaving the country, I burned the little notebook where I had recorded my family's preferences and tastes to ashes. From now on, I would never have to study them so carefully again.

Seven days before leaving, I permanently deleted the dozens of gigabytes of rare music resources I had collected for William from my computer.

Five days before leaving, I threw all the magnesium lotion I had made for Mom and Dad into the toilet.

Three days before leaving, I gathered all the evidence of Selene's bullying and schemes against me over the years. Then, I handed it to Ms. Decker, asking her to give it to Mom and Dad when the time was right.

The day before I was set to leave, I packed what little belongings I had.

Mom and Dad had never bought me much, so everything I brought with me three years ago was all I had left. In other words, nothing had changed.

The small room they had begrudgingly given me looked exactly the same as it did when I arrived three years ago, and it would remain the same after I left.

On the morning of my departure, Mom, Dad, William, and Selene finally returned from their trip. As soon as Selene walked in, she handed me a small box with her usual cheerful smile.

"Aster, I'm so sorry. We were in a bit of a rush, so we only got you this."

I glanced down. The so-called gift turned out to be her half-eaten, long-cold in-flight meal.

I scoffed and tossed it straight into the trash.

Dad's expression darkened immediately. "Aster, what have you been reflecting on all these days at home? Is this how you respond to Selene's kindness?"

William chimed in, pulling Selene closer, "It was just a misunderstanding over something small back then. Do you really have to hold a grudge this long? We were just worried you'd go down the wrong path!"

"William, it's okay. If Aster doesn't like it, I'll buy her something else next time. Or I can go buy something for her right—"

Before Selene could finish speaking, Mom, who had just gone upstairs to put away her luggage, came running back down. Her eyes red, she grabbed my shoulders and demanded, "Aster, what happened to your room? Why is it empty? Where did everything go?"

Selene was surrounded by leaking gas canisters on all sides."Dad, Mom, Aster, you finally came! I've already sent William down. Now let's go join him, okay? And don't even think about having the police shoot me. If there's a gunshot in this house now, the whole place will blow up. Try it if you don't mind dying early."Mrs. Gentry was paralyzed with fear, practically collapsing into Mr. Gentry's arms.Following the police's instructions, I began to reason with her."Selene, didn't you say you wanted us to attend the wedding? Why are you talking about sending us to hell now?"Selene sneered coldly. "Because I hate you all! I hate you for raising me yet never loving me! I hate you all for taking me in and then bringing your biological child back! Isn't that reason enough?"I replied, "When I first returned, your standard of living was always better than mine. Couldn't you sense how much they favored you? I don't even hate them anymore, so what reason do you have to hold onto that

Selene went as far as twisting the truth, repeatedly playing the video of Mr. Gentry slapping her on the day that Ms. Decker exposed her, while accusing the Gentry family of years of abuse. As a result, the Gentry family's company stock plummeted within days, wiping out hundreds of billions of dollars in value. The once-top-tier tycoon's enterprise had fallen from grace overnight, reduced to a third-rate company. To avoid further escalation, the Gentry family had no choice but to agree to William and Selene's engagement. But they immediately arranged for a hospital to terminate her pregnancy, reportedly without anesthesia. If it were anyone else hearing about such an ending, they might have felt vindicated. But I no longer had any interest in the Gentry family's affairs.Throughout the entire welcome party, I deliberately kept my distance from them. Only after the event ended did the Gentry family follow me all the way to the parking lot.Mr. Gentry pleaded, "Asty, I'm begging you

"When a person is starving, and you offer them food, they'll be deeply grateful. But once that person is no longer hungry, even the finest delicacies will just seem greasy and unappealing," I explained over the phone.Ms. Decker didn't push further. Instead, she reminded me to eat and sleep on time and to never neglect my health, no matter how busy I got with schoolwork. After the video call ended, a wire transfer from Ms. Decker appeared in my bank account. She also sent a message that read, "Even with a scholarship, it might not cover everything. Living abroad is expensive, so use this to treat yourself to some nice food."The tears I had held back even in the detention room finally broke free in that moment. It turned out there really were people in this world who loved me.Four years later, I graduated at the top of my class.During those four years, my outstanding academic performance and unique insights caught the attention of a highly respected Gaian professor at the colleg

Selene put on a brave face and forced a smile for Mom and Dad."Dad, Mom, go ahead and take Aster to the airport. I'll be fine on my own," she said, emphasizing the last three words.Even if Mom and Dad left, William could still stay with her."Selene, don't say that. How can I feel at ease leaving you like this?" Mom, who had just been about to loop her arm through mine, abruptly changed direction and hurried over to Selene instead.Dad also walked quickly to her side, turning to me only to say, "Wait here for us. We're taking Selene to the hospital. We'll be back soon."With that, Dad picked Selene up in his arms and strode away without giving me another glance. But I could clearly make out Selene's smug expression as she nestled in the crook of Dad's arm.I never really expected Dad to actually drive me to the airport anyway. After they hurried off in their car, the Uber I had booked earlier arrived. I single-handedly carried my luggages into the car.At the airport, I smoo

"That was our way of nurturing you! Your mother and I were afraid you'd just come out of that impoverished place and let money corrupt your soul. We're your birth parents, so no one wants you to succeed more than we do," Dad shouted angrily. But his anger was clearly just a cover for his guilt."Is that also the case on the day of my SATs? To build character, you'd risk me missing the most important exam of my life?"Dad fell silent, sinking into the couch and lighting a cigarette. He was probably trying to make sense of his own contradictory logic."Mom, Dad, if Aster wants to leave, just let her go! She's nothing but an ungrateful brat! We've given her a comfortable home, yet she still acts like everyone's been bullying her."Let her go out and struggle for a few days. Maybe then she'll understand what it really means to be cold and hungry."I looked down at my wide-open luggage. Almost everything inside had been with me for seven or eight years. The clothes I owned for all fo

"Because I'm leaving." I stepped back calmly, freeing my shoulders from Mom's grip."Leave? Where are you going?" Mom's lips trembled as she pressed on."I'm going to study abroad—as I mentioned before," I replied, my tone remaining steady.Dad, his expression darkening, grabbed my arm. "Study abroad? Didn't you say you weren't going?" he asked, frowning."That's how it was before, but the storm was so bad on the day of the SATs. I was running as fast as I could, but I still missed the exam. So, going abroad is the only option I have left."I paused, then added, "Don't worry. I won't need a single cent from you. The program is fully funded, and even my travel expenses are covered by the foundation that runs it. But even if I come back, I won't be coming here. I'll only visit my classmates and teachers."My voice grew flatter, as if not a single ripple of emotion remained in it.For some reason, the more detached I sounded, the more the expressions of Mom, Dad, William, and even
