Chapter 5

Author: Blueberry Burst
Xavier quickly dropped Violet's hand and hurried over to Aurora. He grabbed her hand as his heart thundered beneath his ribcage.

"Rory, what are you doing here?" he asked. "How long have you been standing there?"

Aurora's lips trembled as she tried her hardest to keep her tears from falling. She clutched the hem of her blouse with feeble fingers and lied, her voice cracking, "I accidentally bumped my head. I was going to clean up in the restroom, but this restaurant is so big that it took me a while to find one."

Anyone who paid close attention would have noticed something was off about Aurora, but Xavier merely heaved a sigh of relief and didn't probe further. He shot Violet a meaningful look, indicating that she should leave, then led Aurora over to the sinks.

"I've only been gone for a short while, and already you've hurt yourself this badly?" he chided, gently cleaning the gash on Aurora's forehead.

Then, he retrieved a Band-Aid from the shelf and carefully stuck it over her wound. "Looks like I'll have to stick with you every second of the day to keep you safe, huh?"

He placed a tender kiss on Aurora's lips and murmured, "Come on, let's skip the rest of dinner and go home."

A distant look registered in Aurora's eyes. She wondered how Xavier could keep playing this role so convincingly. Didn't he ever get tired of pretending?

However, she swallowed her questions. She'd be leaving soon, and she hoped her last three days here in this city would go by in a blur.

Upon returning to the apartment, Xavier lovingly cupped Aurora's face as usual. "Your birthday's in three days, Aurora. I'd like to get our marriage license on that special day."

Aurora went still. She had no idea that the day she moved away from this city would be her birthday.

When she didn't reply, Xavier quickly added for good measure, "Are you worried there'd be another accident to stop us from getting our marriage license, Rory? Don't worry, I promise everything will go smoothly on your birthday, including getting our marriage license."

She pursed her lips tightly as bitterness welled up in her. So, this was the plan Xavier had devised to mark the 100th time he got out of marrying her, by suggesting that they get their marriage license on her birthday.

She forced a smile, her heart like a withered rose within her. "Sure."

"We have a deal, then. Promise me you'll prepare for our big day, Rory," Xavier said, grinning before carrying her into the bedroom so she could rest. She didn't put up a fight.

The next day, Aurora was packing her suitcase when she realized she'd left the farewell gift the orphanage director had given her back at the Bowman residence. If the orphanage director hadn't taken her in after she got lost as a child, she might not have survived all these years.

Now that she was about to leave Nordura, the farewell gift from the orphanage director was the last sentimental connection she had left of this city.

She took a cab to the Bowman residence. Once she arrived, she made her way toward the front entrance and ran into Violet.

Violet bristled at the sight of Aurora. "Aren't you supposed to be getting ready for your big day with Xavier? You're getting your marriage license soon, so why are you here?"

Aurora brushed past her into the villa. She had no intention to pick a fight with Violet. "I'm here to take something of mine. It won't take long."

"I didn't say you could come in!" Violet stormed after Aurora, her gaze darting to the third floor. A sudden idea crossed her mind when she heard the faint laughter coming from upstairs.

Letting out a sharp cry, Violet pretended to have twisted her ankle and fell toward Aurora. The two women tumbled down the stairs, and Aurora ended up underneath Violet, cushioning the fall.

On the third floor, Ethan and Xavier heard the commotion and abandoned whatever they were doing. They bolted downstairs. "What's going on?"

Violet sobbed, "Aurora got upset at me and tried to pay me to leave! When I refused, she pushed me down the stairs!"

The vein near Ethan's temple throbbed. He raised his leg to kick Aurora in the chest, and she flew backward. Before she could recover, Ethan clenched his fists and roared at her, "What did Violet do to piss you off? All she wants is to move back home after returning from abroad!"

"I didn't push her…" Aurora lay on the cold floor, feeling as if her bones were shattered.

On the other side of the room, Xavier helped Violet up with a concerned look on his face. He looked her over, checking for injuries. It was only when he realized she didn't sustain any severe, visible injuries that he heaved a sigh of relief.

"Didn't I already promise you that we'd get our marriage license on your birthday? Why are you still picking on Violet? She didn't do anything to provoke you, did she?" Xavier asked, his eyes full of rage and disappointment as he came to a stop before Aurora.

"She was the one who pushed me. I didn't even touch her," Aurora tried to explain, clutching her chest as the pain drained the blood from her face and caused her to break out in a cold sweat.

"How dare you lie to our faces!" Xavier shouted and slapped her..

The blow hit her like a lightning bolt.

It was the first time in seven years that Xavier had laid a hand on her. She stared at him in disbelief, tears spilling down her cheeks.

Xavier's chest tightened. His hand was still trembling following the slap. "Why are you crying? You'd better think about what you've done and start feeling sorry about it, or I won't bother getting a marriage license with you!"

A loud bang echoed, along with Violet's scream. She never got the chance to hit Aurora. Instead, an unmarked truck came barreling around the corner and crashed straight into her. The windshield shattered into pieces. Some shards were embedded into Violet's face, arms, and blood vessels. Bright red blood poured from her wounds as she screamed and trembled while opening the car door to roll out. However, the moment she got out, she saw a group of men in black suits. The leader rolled up his sleeves, showing off his muscles. "You crazy bitch, we've been watching you for days. Finally caught you in the act." Violet's whole body shook. "W-What?"The man kicked her hard, driving the broken glass deeper as she screamed in agony.Another man stuffed something in her mouth to muffle her cries. "You thought you could ambush Mrs. Winston with such pathetic skills? Do you really think we're amateurs?"The bodyguards laughed loudly, mocking her. "Let me tell you something, Mr. Winston assi

Under mounting pressure, Xavier and Ethan had no choice but to book the earliest flight back to Nordura.Xavier was admitted to a hospital to recover. Though his body was in Nordura, his heart remained stuck in Elmstead, unable to move on. Day after day, he sat silently in his hospital bed, staring blankly at the blue sky and drifting clouds outside the window.Sometimes, Violet would show up with food or offer to massage his legs. However, he treated her like she was invisible, not even sparing her a word. He completely shut himself off from the outside world, escaping into daydreams where Aurora was still by his side.…Two weeks passed, and although Xavier's injuries had mostly healed, his spirit grew duller by the day. That afternoon, Violet finally snapped. She threw the lunchbox to the floor and yelled, "Xavier, can you stop obsessing over her? I'm right here in front of you! Can't you see me?"Xavier's eyes twitched, but his eyes remained lifeless. He said flatly, "Go away

The next afternoon, bright lights shimmered across Aurora's figure inside the bridal boutique. She stood before a full-length mirror, dressed in a luxurious, custom-made wedding gown. The wide, voluminous skirt bloomed like clouds, feeling as soft and delicate as cotton candy against her skin. The boutique staff gathered around her, their eyes full of genuine admiration. One of them gushed, "Miss, you look absolutely stunning. This dress is perfect for you!"Aurora's cheeks flushed. She lowered her gaze, murmuring a shy, "Thank you."Just then, Caden pulled aside the curtain and stepped inside. His eyes locked on her as if entranced, completely captivated by the sight of her. He stood frozen for half a minute before finding his voice."Aurora, you're beautiful," Caden said, his heart feeling like it had been struck by something. He stepped forward and gently kissed her forehead. "I'm a lucky man to be able to marry you."Several boutique staff covered their mouths and stepped asid

Xavier shut his eyes in pain, knowing Aurora's personality well. If she said she would die rather than go with him, she meant it. He couldn't afford to take that risk, but it still burned inside him that she'd rather be with someone else."Rory, I really love you. We were together for so many years. If you wanted to get married, you could've just told me. Why run off to marry some stranger instead? I'm begging you, Rory. Please forgive me. Come back with me," he pleaded.Aurora had finally loosened the ropes on her wrists and pulled herself free. She stared coldly at Xavier and said, "Don't insult the word 'love.' I'm not getting married just because I want to get married. I'm marrying because I met Caden, and he made me want that life."She added, her face showing no emotion, "Save your confession for when you go back to Nordura and tell it to Violet."If this had happened in the past, Aurora would have been so thrilled by Xavier's confession that she couldn't sleep. But now, she

The moment Xavier stepped into the upscale private club's luxury lounge, he saw Caden sitting at the head of the table, staring at him coldly."I figured you'd agree to see me," Xavier said with a smirk, casually pulling out a chair and sitting down.Caden tapped his fingers on the table, his eyes radiating murderous intent. "So, what are your conditions?"Xavier raised an eyebrow. "Conditions? You really want her that badly? Caden, you're supposed to be Elmstead's golden boy, and Aurora's just some woman I got tired of sleeping with. You really want to pick up my leftovers and treat them like treasure?"Caden picked up his coffee cup and hurled it straight at Xavier's chest. "Watch your mouth, or next time it won't be just a cup I'm throwing."Xavier gritted his teeth but kept his cocky attitude. "Caden, my words might be harsh, but they're the truth. Aurora was with me for seven years. I could find that mole on her chest with my eyes closed, and she even carried my child once.

Xavier stood there like he'd been struck by lightning, reaching out again for Aurora. However, Ethan quickly stepped in to block him. He shot Xavier a warning look and said, "You're going to scare her!"Then, he turned around, his voice suddenly softer. "Aurora, I'm on your side. Don't forgive this guy too easily! But I'm not like him… I'm your big brother. You might not go home with him, but at least come home with me, okay?"He reached out to hug her. "Mom and Dad are back. We're all waiting for you to come home and be a family again—"But the next second, Ethan was punched from behind. He cried out in pain and spun around, stunned to see Caden standing there. He growled, "You punk, I'm her brother! How dare you hit me?"Caden's eyes were ice-cold, anger radiating from his entire body. "You think you deserve to call yourself Aurora's brother?""I—" Ethan was intimidated by his authoritative gaze and stood there unable to say a word.Caden took off his suit jacket and gently d
