Chapter 4

Author: Ladywoffie
"You can't touch this."

I pulled the necklace back.

Ellie hadn't expected to be refused. Her whole face scrunched up.

"Uncle Cardo said I can use anything here. Everything here is mine."

"But this is mine."

I closed my fist around the pendant.

She looked furious. Suddenly she lunged at me, her voice sharp.

"I don't like you! Get out!"

Her hand grabbed the chain and yanked, hard.

The silver snapped. The pendant slipped through my fingers and hit the floor.

I went completely still.

When I was little, my father called me his little deer.

Every birthday, he'd make me a deer-shaped pancake with his own hands.

The year he died, he couldn't make pancakes anymore, so he found a silversmith and had this necklace made.

The pendant was a little deer, my name engraved on the back.

He said, this is the last little deer I'll ever give you.

After I became Cardo's Donna, I had more fine jewelry than I could count.

But I always kept it.

And now it was broken in the hands of a six-year-old.

Ellie froze too, but only because she saw my face. She burst into frightened sobs.

Cardo and Camilla came in fast.

"What happened?"

Ellie threw herself into Cardo's arms, sobbing so hard she could barely breathe.

"Auntie wouldn't let me play with the necklace, and she yelled at me!"

Camilla crouched down and held her, then looked up at me with just the right amount of apology in her voice.

"Donna, I'm sorry. I didn't know my being here would make you this upset."

I knelt down to pick up the broken half of the chain.

Cardo was faster. He bent, picked up the pendant, and weighed it in his hand.

"It's just a necklace. I'll buy you a new one tomorrow."

I looked up at him.

"You don't know what this necklace is?"

Cardo paused. He looked down, saw the broken little deer, and his expression changed at once.

On the day of the funeral, I sat in the last pew of the church and told him about this necklace.

The deer. The pancakes. My father's hands.

That day he held me for a long time and said he'd treasure it.

He clearly remembered now.

He set the pendant back on the table, impatience creeping into his voice.

"She's a child. She doesn't understand."

"She doesn't," I said, looking at him. "But do you? Do you not understand what this necklace means?"

Cardo's brow furrowed.

"Viv, don't throw a tantrum right now."

Camilla pulled Ellie closer and spoke with red eyes.

"Cardo, it's my fault. If I hadn't come, Donna's necklace wouldn't be broken. It's on me. I'll take her and go right now."

She took all the blame onto herself, but not once did she make Ellie say sorry.

I looked at her, then at Cardo.

The way he stood guard over the two of them was so natural, like this was how it was always supposed to be.

Suddenly I felt so tired.

"Get out."

Cardo frowned. "Calm down."

"This is my room."

I gritted my teeth.

"All of you. Out."

Cardo looked like he wanted to say more, but Ellie in his arms cried harder.

Camilla tugged gently at his sleeve and murmured that he should take the child out first.

The door closed.

I sat on the floor, picked up the two broken halves of the necklace, and put them in a plastic bag.

A broken chain can be mended. A cracked pendant can be repaired.

But some things, once broken, never go back to what they were.

At dinner, Cardo knocked and called me out to eat. I didn't answer.

Half an hour later, he pushed the door open and set a bag from a jewelry store on the table.

"I had the best goldsmith in New York make you a new one."

Inside was a gold necklace, the pendant exquisite and expensive, glinting under the light.

"We can make new memories."

I said nothing.

He stood there a moment, then said, "Let's have dinner together later, and we can put this behind us."

I didn't touch the bag.

I only put the plastic bag with the broken chain at the very bottom of my suitcase.

Three months later, using the first royalty payment from my new picture book, I bought a studio of my own on the West Coast. It wasn't spacious, but it had a full wall of floor-to-ceiling windows.I kept my little deer necklace. The fine crack along its side was still clearly visible, but I never once thought of covering it with an expensive gem or replacing it.On the day of the new book's national release, the publisher sent a batch of donated copies to several partner public legal aid organizations across the country. On the recipient list was the legal aid foundation for abused minors where Cardo now worked. He didn't send any letter through it, didn't have anyone pass along a single word, and never appeared at any corner of my book tour.I named the new picture book The Meaning of Setting Out.It tells the story of a girl who, after a great loss and upheaval, finds the courage again to embrace the world with a smile. There's no endless waiting in the story, and no dramatic reunion

  • Until the Infinity Ran Out   Chapter 16

On the day of the art gala, Cardo arrived near the venue before dawn.He stayed alone in an ordinary hotel two blocks away. This time, he didn't take a private jet, didn't use a mafia motorcade, and didn't use any elevator that might malfunction. At six in the morning, he walked step by step along the streets of Los Angeles to the main entrance of the arts center. There were still a full four hours before the gala officially began. He wore a very low-key dark trench coat and carried only water and black coffee. He sat quietly on a bench at the street corner, his eyes never once leaving the front entrance. While he waited, he didn't call the organizing committee, didn't use any of his old underworld pressure, and didn't have anyone slip his name into the VIP backstage. This time, he didn't want to use the surname "Falcone," the name that once made everyone afraid, or his connections, to force any kind of response from me.He just wanted to look at me from a distance, in the open sunligh

Cardo began rooting out the traitors who had caused Marco's death, and he reinvestigated Marco's family. When he got to Camilla, he found that she had five properties under her name, all equipped with top-level security systems. The dates on the property registrations were long before she'd reached out to Cardo. And Ellie didn't have the severe PTSD Camilla had claimed. She wouldn't be in life-threatening danger from ordinary crying or insomnia. Most critically, Camilla came from a mafia family in the South. After Marco died, her family had sent people three separate times to offer her and her daughter the highest level of family protection and living arrangements, and every single time, she'd flatly refused. The only protection she'd ever accepted was Cardo's.Cardo met Camilla at a café.When she saw the property deeds, the medical evaluations, and the negotiation letters from her family's side spread across the table, Camilla's face went instantly pale.First she denied it frantical

The online storm soon reached me.Countless accounts attacked my Instagram relentlessly. Some even came to my Los Angeles studio late at night to splash red paint on the door, spray insulting graffiti, and shout that I, the "Don's abandoned canary," should crawl back to the underworld.I did nothing. I didn't respond on any public platform.I knew all too well what a so-called "public clarification" would turn into. The moment I stood up and said he hadn't been physically unfaithful, everyone would assume that the emotional cold violence and marginalization I'd endured in the bloody world of the mafia could all be forgiven. The moment I showed even a trace of having once loved him deeply, countless onlookers would be generous on my behalf, urging me to return to that golden cage for the sake of the family's interests. But whether or not he'd been physically unfaithful had never been the only reason I left so decisively.Rachel handled all the legal side of the defamation. She issued a

But as Vivian became famous at major art exhibitions across the country, she quickly drew the jealousy and malicious suppression of her peers. Her wedding photo with Cardo, photos of Cardo out to dinner with Camilla and Ellie, and photos of the argument at the hospital went viral on social media.Everyone was talking about how this emerging artist was "the Don's abandoned canary.""After being dumped by the mafia, she can only sell her talent in the art world as a failed canary. What a familiar script.""She can't even manage her own marriage, and now she's playing the sympathy card to beg the foundation for handouts…"Some even spliced her old society wedding photos together with her current signing ceremony, maliciously spreading rumors that she'd been thrown out of the family for bad conduct. These malicious smears weren't just aimed at Vivian. They quickly sent shockwaves through the Falcone family. The family elders had already started whispering behind closed doors, even spreadin

After the second missed chance, Cardo gave up entirely on using any means to find out where Vivian was staying. He extended his stay for half a month at a hotel two streets from the arts center in downtown Los Angeles.Every morning, he passed the arts center plaza, but he strictly kept his oath and never set foot in the residents' office area.Sometimes on the crowded streets of Los Angeles, he'd suddenly spot a slender figure in the crowd who looked so much like Vivian, but every time he chased after her with no regard for anything, the person who turned around was always a stranger's face.He stopped hoping for luck. He just quietly followed the public schedule posted by the Los Angeles Public Arts Foundation.Half a month later, the Los Angeles Central Library was hosting a public art illustration sharing session, and Vivian's name appeared on the guest list again. On the day of the event, Cardo arrived an hour early. He sat in the corner of the last row of the lecture hall. But as
