Raven’s POV

I was still very much asleep when the blankets were ripped off me.

“Get up!”

The cold slapped my skin. I stirred groggily, dragging myself up through layers of sleep that clung like wet mud, my eyes barely open, my mind three counties behind my body.

“I said up! We don’t have time for this.”

I snapped upright immediately, my heart slamming wildly in my chest. I raised my head slowly, coming face to face with a handsome, godlike face that set the butterflies in my stomach in a frenzy

Raven's POV I made it halfway to my room before I turned around.I knew what Asher had said. But my feet kept slowing down. I couldn’t just pretend to ignore the screams coming from behind me. As the Luna, things like this should not be hidden from me; this was just a harsh reminder of how I was only a Luna by name. He'll be angry, my wolf agreed. You're going anyway.I know.I went back anyway. The screaming had stopped by the time I reached the hall. The door stood half open. I stayed in the shadow beside it and looked in.A man lay on the long table. His tunic was torn open. His chest was covered in black lines that crawled out from his wounds like roots. His eyes were shut, and his face was gray.He wasn't breathing.Ansel stood at the foot of the table. Maya stood at the head. Asher was next to her, with blood on his hands and sleeves. None of them were talking. My stomach turned. I pressed my palm flat against the wall, trying to steady myself.Footsteps came down the corridor

Asher's POVThe wind pulled her hair loose. It was a small thing. A tie slipped, and the whole mess of it blew across her face. She laughed and gathered it back with her fingers. Her cheeks were pink. A stray tear was still drying on her skin.I stopped breathing.I wanted her. I wanted to kiss her until she forgot her own name. I wanted to hold her and touch her. She was making me lose my fucking mind, and she didn't even know it.But I couldn't.She was just the Luna we needed for the throne. Right? That was what I had told myself for weeks. It sounded weaker every time."Asher?" she said. "Are you okay?""Nothing," I said. My voice came out rough. I cleared my throat. "It's nothing."She smiled at me. It nearly knocked me over. Then her eyes lit up. "Come on, Asher. Let's race back to the pack.""Race?" I frowned. "On foot?""Yes.""We just walked for an hour.""You carried me for half of it.""That's the point."She laughed and walked backward, her new sword bouncing at her hip. S

Raven's POV "Do you really like that one?" Asher asked. "It's a bit unusual. And a bit too big for a lady. Are you sure?"I held the blade against my chest. It hummed softly, like a cat purring."Yes. Please, Asher."I batted my eyelashes at him. I did it badly. I had never done it before. He stared at me for a long second. His ear went pink."Fine," he said.He paid for it. He paid for a belt and sheath too, plus a whetstone, a cleaning cloth, and a set of leather wrist guards. The shopkeeper packed everything into a canvas bag and wished us a good evening. He did not look at us directly. He was still trying not to smile.Outside, the sun had slipped low. The sky was turning orange behind the rooftops. It was already late.Asher slung the bag over his shoulder. I tied the sheath to my belt and checked three times that the blade sat right. It looks good on us, my wolf said.It does.Say thank you to the big guy.I will. Later. When my face stops being hot.We walked together, side by

Raven's POV The shopkeeper was a round, cheerful man with a leather apron and a bald head that shone under the lamps. He clapped his hands the second we walked in."Prince Asher! And a lady! What a day!""We need a sword for her," Asher said."Of course, of course!" His eyes went over me, head to boots. His smile widened. "Leave it to me."He vanished behind the counter. Then he came back with his arms full and laid everything out on the table. Long swords. Short swords. Curved ones. Blades with gold handles and blades studded with red stones. One had a hilt shaped like a snarling wolf."Wow," I breathed."Try this one," the shopkeeper said, and held out a broad blade with a jeweled guard.I took it with both hands. The weight hit my arms like a sack of wet sand. The tip dropped straight to the floor and clanged."Too heavy," Asher said."Ah. Then this." The shopkeeper handed me a silver one.It was lighter. But the hilt was so wide my fingers couldn't wrap around it. It was also cov

Raven's POV I got up on my own. I didn't want to take his hand. Everything in me was trembling, and I was sure he could see it.Asher watched me do it. One corner of his mouth moved. It wasn't quite a smile."You're going to learn different weapons before the festival," he said. "Today, let's work on your basic sword technique."I nodded."Go upstairs and change into something simple. Then come back."I blinked. "Why?""I want us to go somewhere. It's a bit far.""Where?""You'll see."I didn't ask again. I limped back to my room, and every step made my thighs scream. Seth lifted his head when I walked in. He sniffed my sweaty clothes and sneezed."Not a word," I told him.I took one minute to wash my face and neck. That was all I could spare. Then I pulled on a plain shirt, soft trousers, and my old boots. I tied my hair back and went downstairs.Asher was waiting by the front steps. He had put a shirt on. I tried not to feel disappointed about that.Interesting, my wolf said. You'r

Raven's POV "Try to make me take one step back," Asher said. "Use whatever you have."I nodded. It was just a push. He was a mountain, but it was only one step. I could do that.He dropped into a loose stance and held his empty hands out at his sides. He didn't even raise his guard. That annoyed me.I ran at him.I hit his chest with both hands and pushed with everything I had. It felt like shoving a wall. He didn't blink. My shoulders jarred, and my boots skidded in the dirt."Again," he said.I backed up and went again. Same result."You're only using your arms.""I know that!""Then use something else."I bit my lip. I dropped lower and drove off my back foot. This time I used my legs. The push came up from the ground, through my hips, into my hands. I felt the difference right away. My body moved more easily than it used to. I was faster. Lighter on my feet.Asher's boots slid. Maybe half an inch."Better," he said.I grinned. "Did I move you?""No."My grin dropped.I tried agai
