Chapter 29

Author: Darshen
Silas's eyes narrowed slightly as he watched Sophie disappear into the kitchen. He lifted the cup and took a sip.

"Hiss…"

The heat scalded his tongue. He winced, drawing in a sharp breath, his stomach twisting in protest.

With a darkened expression, he set the cup down on the coffee table. His gaze dropped to the floor, to the scattered beer bottles, and a wave of irritation surged through him. Without thinking, his right foot snapped out, sending a crushed soda can clattering into the corner.

Clang—

The crisp noise echoed abruptly through the stillness of the room.

In the kitchen, the sound startled Sophie so badly she flinched and instinctively dropped the spoon in her hand. Her arms flew up, protecting her head.

Old nightmares burst back into her mind with sharp clarity. Wounds long thought healed pulsed again with dull, aching pain.

On the stove, the pot of porridge had just come to a boil. Thick white porridge overflowed from the tightly shut lid, spilling onto the open fl

A flicker of ache passed through Silas's chest as he looked at Sophie's downcast face.In that moment, he was suddenly struck by how terribly unworthy he was.It was her birthday, after all. She had not only stayed to take care of him, but even cooked porridge for him. How could he let all of that go to waste?Gulp—He forced the spoonful of porridge down his throat with difficulty and rushed to explain himself."Sophie, the porridge you made is delicious. I really like it. The reason I didn't respond earlier is because I was savoring the taste.""Really?" Her dim eyes lit up all at once. Sophie lifted the corners of her lips, voice light and cheerful. "If you like it, have more. There's still some in the pot!"Of course. She knew it—she was clever enough that cooking couldn't possibly trip her up.Urgh—His stomach turned. Silas gripped the edge of the table, fighting to suppress the surge rising to his throat. He nodded stiffly."Alright."He lowered his head and looked in

Harper's lips drew into a quiet line. Head lowered, her fingertips moved swiftly over her phone.Harper: [Can I decorate it however I like?]Lloyd: [Of course. As long as you're happy.]Lloyd: [There's a card in the cabinet by the entrance. The code is 200202.]"200202? What kind of code is that?" Her clear eyes showed a flicker of confusion. She rubbed her chin lightly, murmuring to herself. When she didn't reply right away, another message came in.Lloyd: [Is something wrong?]Harper: [No, I got it.]She typed quickly, though in her heart, she had no intention of using that card. This was their wedding home. She hadn't paid a cent when the place was bought. Even if she handled the decor, she couldn't bring herself to spend his money.Harper: [I'll try to send you a design draft as soon as possible.]Lloyd: [Alright.]…Meanwhile, at Harper's old apartment, the room was dim. On the cold tile floor, Silas lay tangled in a nightmare, his brow tightly furrowed, chest heaving

The house was big. Enormously big.And cold. Strangely, piercingly cold. What opened before her eyes was an expansive living room—vast, but entirely barren. Not even a sofa in sight. The whole space was rendered in shades of black and gray. Minimal. Austere. A finely finished structure that somehow still felt like a shell, like a polished skeleton waiting for flesh.Harper stood there, lips slightly pursed, her gaze caught in the stillness. For a moment, she didn't know what to say."Surprised, huh?" Nate's voice came from behind. "I felt the same way when I saw it yesterday."He caught up with her, dragging the suitcase behind, and added quickly, "But actually, Lloyd designed it this way on purpose.""Hm?" She turned her face slightly, brows drawn together, eyes filled with faint confusion."He said he wasn't sure what kind of style you'd like. So he just took care of the basic framework. The rest… well, he figured you'd want to decide that yourself."Harper's expression shif

Harper had only wanted a house she liked. How did that make her vain?"Do you smell that in the air, Harper?" Nate, walking ahead with the suitcase in tow, turned and grinned at her."Hmm?" Raising a brow, Harper paused and caught it too—the faint scent drifting gently through the air."Is that... osmanthus?"A flicker of surprise passed through her eyes. She parted her lips, inhaled deeply, and then nodded. "Yes, it's osmanthus!"This time, she was certain. There had been an osmanthus tree in the courtyard of her childhood home. Every autumn, its fragrance would linger quietly through the small yard. Her mother used to make osmanthus jam and rice cakes from the blossoms. She would even brew osmanthus wine especially for her father to drink during the holidays. But after her mother passed away, she never had any of it again. The corners of her eyes reddened. Inhaling that familiar scent, she blinked hard, forcing back the tears gathering in her eyes."Are there osmanthus tree

Harper stepped out of the taxi at Rancove Bay and immediately saw Nate jogging toward her in a bubblegum-pink suit and a bright green bowtie, his grin stretched wide across his face."Harper! I told you I'd come get you. Why'd you take a cab yourself?"A flicker of embarrassment passed through her dark eyes. The memory of nearly vomiting during the last car ride returned unbidden, and her stomach clenched involuntarily. She forced a smile, hurriedly paid the taxi driver, and turned to the trunk to retrieve her suitcase."I figured your arm hasn't fully healed," she said. "And there wasn't much for me to pack anyway, so I just called a cab.""Waaah… Harper, you're way too kind!" Nate's eyes, round and bright like spring blossoms, shimmered with emotion. "But don't worry. Even if I've only got one working arm, I can still help you with your luggage."With that, he snatched the suitcase from her hand, hoisting it with his right arm, eager to show off the biceps he'd clearly been wor
