Getting a Job

Valentine’s Day

“Did I pass the application review?” I asked into the phone, a small smile appearing on my face, I was so confident and happy, ready to rejoice.

“Ms. Valentina Chandler, we thank you for applying to our company, we genuinely appreciate your effort and interest, however, we regret to inform you that we are unable to proceed with your application.” I felt my heart sink, that wasn’t the information I was hoping to hear. “We appreciate your interest and cooperation, and we look forward to seeing you sometime in the future.”

“W-W-Wait!” I yelled before Vena could disconnect my call “Wait… Why am I being refused? You assured me that I met all your requirements and I would be allowed to work.”

“Um…Yes, I did say that, but please forgive me for the misinformation, however, you are right to the point but the main reason why we refused your application is that our company prefers candidates who are at least twenty-one years of age.”

“Oh…” My shoulders slumped down in disappointment, but I still managed to force the rest of my words out. “Thank you and I appreciate your help.”

“See you around, Ms. Chandler.”

The phone went blank again and I heaved a worried sigh, I was already very excited about getting the job, the pay was really good. Another sigh escaped my lips I thought probably after high school, I could work full-time for a year, so I could save more money and I might not need to rely on a scholarship to get into college.

I thought I would be able to afford my tuition but here is how my bad luck follows me everywhere.

They have an age requirement of twenty-one, and I’m only nineteen.

“I still have two years to be twenty-one,” I muttered to myself kicking a small chunk of rock away from my path as I tread down the narrow alley on my way to the bus station. “I need to find another job.”

I got the bus that headed for school, I was still surfing the internet for a more suitable job, and just as I scrolled through several ads and job offers, I reached another post and my heart stopped for a bit.

“This isn’t real,” I murmured to myself, my eyes widened in surprise as they scanned the advert that says.

“I want to hire a tutor for my son, two hours after school during the weekdays, and eight hours during the weekend, pay is five thousand dollars every two weeks.”

My brain stopped working as soon as I got to the pay, someone was willing to pay five-freaking-thousand-freaking dollars for a math tutor every two freaking weeks!

This should be illegal!

That’s the highest I have seen for a part-time job, on the app... Scratch that, this is the highest I’ve seen for a tutor job anywhere.

The hours of work are so flexible but the requirements say I have to be in college to be qualified, but I wasn’t a college student yet. It was posted a minute ago, I have to hurry up and think before someone else gets this golden opportunity!

“I will figure that out,” I muttered to myself and I clicked on the apply button anyways, almost immediately I got a response from the poster.

Surprisingly, luck seemed to be on my side as I discussed with him, and soon enough he scheduled an interview with me, for tomorrow afternoon.

“I’m getting this job,” I told myself with all the confidence in this world, I was sure of my skills, but the only problem I had now was the success rate of proving myself to be a college student.

Well, Melissa should figure this out for me.

With ten thousand dollars a month, I should probably move out of my stepfather’s house, my family doesn’t need me, I am just being a nuisance by sticking around.

This is the perfect opportunity for me to leave them.

My mother had me when she was just eighteen, I was a child born from a rape, and even though she wanted to get rid of me, she wasn’t allowed to and so she was forced to have me and sadly, she could never get over the trauma and the incident of that night. She never complains no matter what Ron does to me and as for my half-siblings, it’s the same for them.

I am not worried about it anymore, if I were them, I would probably hate myself too.

The bus stopped me just a few miles to the gates of hell, which is mind you, my school; Snow Hills Academia. The worst thing that happened to me, was ever getting the scholarship to study here, I had no idea the school would be filled with bloodthirsty demons, ready to tear off the rest of the sanity I had left.

That’s what you expect when you go to a school filled with rich kids who are allergic to poor people, living and breathing in the same space as themselves.

“Move out of the way, loser!” Someone bumped into me, a small scream escaped my lips when I lost my balance and was about to crash into the concrete flooring when an arm suddenly grabbed me and steadied me.

I found myself lost in the depths of the blue eyes that stared down at me softly, my heart stopped immediately and I felt my cheeks became very hot.

“T-T-Travis,” I stammered swinging myself away from his embrace, looking left and right to be sure no one saw us in the position, I didn’t want to be rude by running off immediately, so I whispered the rest of the words to him. “T-Thank you.”

He was about to say something, when I pushed him away and hurriedly ran off, I don’t even want to imagine the surprise that would be on his face, but God forbid, Lucille saw us, or even worse… Ethan.

I don’t want to have anything to do with Ethan, that psychotic bastard.
