INICIAR SESIÓNThe world spun in a dizzying blur of shattered glass and crunching metal before everything slammed to a halt and left me hanging upside down against the crushing grip of my seatbelt.
My ears rang with a high-pitched whine, and the horrible noise drowned out the steady drumming of the rain against the crumpled roof of the SUV.
I blinked hot blood out of my eyes, and I gagged as the thick stench of leaking gasoline filled the cramped space.
The dashboard sparked with a hiss of dying electronics, and the faint glow illuminated the horrific damage to the front of the vehicle.
Our driver was slumped over the steering wheel, and a quick glance at his twisted posture told me he was already gone.
"Liora," a rough voice groaned from the driver's side, and the sound barely registered through the awful ringing in my head.
I turned my head an inch, and I hissed through my teeth because sharp pain flared down my neck and across my bruised ribs.
Darian hung beside me with a nasty gash across his forehead, but the bleeding was already starting to slow down as his wolf healing kicked in to repair the damage.
He shook his head to clear the disorientation, and his glowing eyes snapped to mine with immediate panic.
"D-Darian, the gas," I stuttered out, and I clawed at the jammed buckle of my seatbelt with shaking fingers because the chemical smell was making me dizzy.
He didn't waste time arguing with the mangled buckle, and he simply reached over and snapped the thick nylon strap with his bare hands before catching me as I dropped toward the shattered ceiling.
I hit the broken glass hard and grunted, and Darian was already kicking his heavy boots against the crushed frame of the passenger door.
The metal shrieked in protest until the hinges finally snapped and sent the door tumbling out into the muddy ditch.
Darian grabbed my jacket and dragged me out of the wreckage into the freezing rain, and we scrambled up the slick embankment while the wrecked SUV hissed behind us.
I collapsed onto my hands and knees in the wet grass, and I coughed up a mouthful of smoke while my lungs burned for oxygen.
The freezing downpour soaked through my clothes instantly, and the mud coated my hands as I struggled to find my balance on the steep hill.
"Are you hurt?" Darian asked, and he gripped my shoulders to pull me upright while his eyes darted nervously toward the dark treeline.
"I will live," I wheezed out, and I wiped the mud from my face just as a low, wet growl echoed through the pine trees.
The terrifying sound made the hair on the back of my neck stand up, and I froze when three massive shadows slunk out from the darkness of the woods.
These were not the disciplined wolves from Kiefer's pack, and their fur was matted with filth while their yellow eyes burned with a starving, rabid desperation.
The wind shifted and carried the rancid smell of rotting meat toward us, and I pressed a hand over my nose while my stomach rolled in disgust.
"Rogues," Darian muttered, and he shoved me behind his broad back while he bared his teeth at the approaching monsters.
"Run, Liora," he ordered, and his voice deepened into a guttural snarl as his bones began to crack and pop under his skin.
"I am not leaving you here to die," I yelled back over the rain, and I dug my boots into the mud while I reached for the pocket of my cargo pants.
"Get the fuck out of here!" Darian roared, and his human words dissolved into a terrifying howl as he forced a painful shift and exploded into a massive, silver-furred wolf.
I had never seen him shift so fast, and he didn't have a choice because the largest rogue was already lunging through the air with its jaws aimed straight for his throat.
Darian met the rogue in mid-air with a sickening crunch of bone and muscle, and the two massive beasts crashed into the mud while tearing at each other with lethal intent.
The sheer violence of the clash shook the ground beneath my feet, and the sound of snapping jaws echoed over the howling wind.
I scrambled backward and pulled my silver-laced wrench from my pocket, and my fingers gripped the cold metal so tight my knuckles turned white.
I watched the two wolves roll through the wet grass, and the rogue scratched frantically at Darian's face while Darian tried to secure a hold on its neck.
A second rogue circled the fight and kept its belly low to the ground, and its rabid eyes locked onto Darian's exposed flank while he was busy pinning the leader.
"Darian, behind you!" I screamed, and the rain and the snarling drowned out my warning as the second rogue coiled its powerful hind legs to strike.
I didn't think about the danger or the fact that I was just a human, and I simply ran forward and threw myself into the chaotic mess of teeth and claws.
The rogue launched itself toward Darian's blind spot, and I slid across the wet grass and swung my heavy wrench with every ounce of strength I had left in my bruised body.
The silver connected with the side of the rogue's skull with a loud crack, and the beast let out a high-pitched yelp as the metal seared its skin.
The force of the blow sent a painful shockwave up my arm, and the wrench slipped from my wet fingers and tumbled into the mud.
The rogue tumbled to the side and thrashed wildly in the dirt, and the distraction gave Darian exactly the opening he needed to finish his own fight.
Darian clamped his jaws down on the leader's neck and ripped its throat out, and a spray of hot, dark blood hit the grass before the rogue went limp.
He spun around and stalked toward the injured rogue that I had just hit, and he didn't hesitate before driving his heavy paws into its chest and snapping its neck with a brutal bite.
The third rogue realized it was outnumbered and let out a terrified whimper before turning its tail and sprinting back into the safety of the dark forest.
The sudden silence was deafening, and the only sounds left were the heavy rain hitting the trees and my own stuttering breaths echoing in my ears.
I dropped to my knees in the mud and wrapped my arms around my chest, and I squeezed my eyes shut while the adrenaline slowly drained out of my shaking limbs.
The reality of how close we had just come to dying settled over me, and my chest heaved as I struggled to force air into my burning lungs.
I hated feeling this vulnerable, and I hated the way my heart hammered painfully against my ribs while I waited for the panic to fade.
Darian shifted back into his human form, and he stood naked in the rain for a brief second before pulling a torn, blood-stained shirt from a piece of luggage that had scattered from the wreck.
He pulled the ruined fabric over his head and walked over to me, and he dropped to his knees in the mud so he could check my face for injuries.
"I told you to run," Darian said, and his rough voice lacked any real anger as he gently wiped a streak of rogue blood from my cheek.
I blinked against the harsh white light shining in my face.My knees ached against the hard floor, and my hands were slick with Zayden's blood.Lucius just sat there in his pristine academy uniform, looking completely bored. He spun the rolling desk chair around and lowered the flashlight so the beam pointed at my boots."Are you kidding me?" I breathed out, my heart still hammering a frantic rhythm. "How the hell did you get down here?""I walked," Lucius answered simply. He stood up from the ancient computer terminal and brushed a thin layer of dust off his dark slacks."The faculty was too busy watching the elite packs tear each other apart in the woods. They left the administrative wards wide open.""We just got dropped down a chute," I told him, pressing the torn cloth harder against Zayden's bleeding side. "There was a gargoyle."Lucius stepped over a thick bundle of cables and walked toward us."I bypassed the maze," he said, his boots crunching softly on the loose dirt. "I've
The loud, pounding chaos of the festival and the terrifying roar of the stone monster were gone. The only sound in the massive, forgotten library was the harsh rhythm of our breathing.Blood soaked quickly through the first few layers of the cloth, making my fingers slick and warm, but I refused to ease up.I pushed my palms down harder, leaning my shoulder into his chest for better leverage."You can let go of my arm now," I told him softly. His grip slowly loosened as the initial shock of the pain finally passed. He didn't drop his hand back to the floor, though. He let his hand slide down to my waist, resting his palm flat against my back just above where I ripped my shirt. His touch sent a sudden jolt of electricity racing straight up my spine, and my breath caught in my throat. He wasn't trying to push me away anymore. He was just holding on to me like I was the only thing keeping him tethered to the ground.I looked down at his face, really looking at him for the first time sinc
My stomach leaped into my throat as gravity pulled us down into the dark.Zayden held me flush against his chest, keeping his arms locked tight around my waist. We hit a steep curve, and my boots scraped against the smooth stone sides of the chute.I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing for a crash that felt like it was taking forever to happen. He twisted his body at the last second, putting his own back toward the floor as we shot out of the tunnel. We crashed hard onto solid rock. The brutal impact knocked the breath right out of my lungs. We rolled across the uneven ground together until Zayden slammed into something heavy with a loud thud.A harsh groan tore from his throat, and his arms finally let go of me.Thick dust kicked up into the air, choking me as I pushed myself off his chest and scrambled backward. My ribs flared with sharp pain, but the rigid medical tape Saskia put on held firm against my skin.I coughed loudly, waving my hands to clear the thick gray cloud settling aroun
I turned and grabbed Liora hard around the waist.I threw us both backward into the dirt just as the red rune ignited. The blast was deafening.A massive boom shook the narrow tunnel, vibrating right through my teeth.Chunks of hot rock and thick dust exploded outward in a violent wave. The monster blew apart in a shower of bright sparks and broken gears. The shockwave hit us like a speeding train. It picked us up and threw us backward across the loose gravel.I wrapped my arms around Liora's head, tucking her face into my chest to protect her from the flying shrapnel.Heavy pieces of stone rained down on my back.Sharp pieces of metal pinged against the walls around us.The heat from the explosion washed over my neck, singeing the collar of my jacket. Then, the noise stopped. The loud grinding sound of the monster was gone. The only sound left was the steady, heavy falling of dirt hitting the floor.I kept my arms around her for a long time.I didn't want to move. The adrenaline cras
"Touch him again, and I will melt you into slag."Her voice echoed off the damp stone walls, fierce and steady.I laid in the dirt, my side burning like someone had shoved a hot iron spike right between my ribs.Blood poured from the jagged tear in my uniform. The hot liquid soaked through my shirt and pooled in the dark mud under my back.Every single breath I took sent a fresh, blinding wave of agony straight through my chest.I blinked through the haze of pain and tried to focus my eyes.Liora stood directly between me and the massive stone monster. She wasn't holding her silver wrench anymore. She wasn't trying to hide behind a rock or run for cover.A blinding, pale light poured from her bare hands, lighting up the dark tunnel. The glow washed over the rough walls and cast deep, dancing shadows across her face.My inner dragon did not roar.It did not push me to rise up and fight for dominance like it always did when challenged. The ancient beast inside my soul went dead silent.
The gargoyle was massive, taking up almost the entire width of the tunnel. It was carved from rough, gray rock, but beneath the stone joints, thick metal gears ground together with a sickening crunch.Glowing yellow eyes fixed right on us, cutting through the settling dust like searchlights.Zayden shoved me hard behind his back.He didn't pull a second weapon or look for an escape route in the enclosed space. He planted his boots in the dirt and raised his empty left hand toward the monster.A massive wave of crimson fire erupted from his palm. The flames burned so hot they instantly singed the ends of my hair and sucked the oxygen right out of the narrow tunnel. The fire swallowed the gargoyle whole, washing over its heavy wings and horned head.I braced myself for the sound of cracking stone and melting metal.Instead, the ancient runes carved deep into the monster's chest flared to life. They glowed a blinding, bright yellow, and the beast simply absorbed the royal magic. The fire
