Chapter 4

مؤلف: Adrian
I looked at Silas, and the tears finally spilled.

"So tonight's ceremony is another favor you're doing me?"

Sometimes silence is a clearer answer than words.

Vera sat in her wheelchair, still sniffling softly.

"Evelyn, don't blame Silas. I shouldn't have come. I'll leave right now."

She motioned for someone to wheel her out, and Silas immediately stopped her.

"Nobody's blaming you."

That was when I understood.

If Vera was blameless, then I had to carry every bit of blame.

The master of ceremonies nervously ushered Silas and me to the center of the red carpet.

I took my place.

But Silas did not stand beside me.

Vera claimed her legs hurt too badly to sit and that she needed someone to support her.

Silas barely hesitated before turning to stand at her side.

The place where the groom belonged remained empty.

I stood at my own Blood Oath Ceremony in my wedding robe, like a sacrificial offering placed at the wrong altar.

The master of ceremonies wiped sweat from his brow and fumbled through his oath book.

"And now, we invite the bride... Vera Whitmore!"

"To present the blessing sash to the groom!"

The hall fell dead silent, as if a cathedral bell had crashed through it.

I looked up at Silas in shock, waiting for him to correct it.

But he only frowned.

"Continue. We can't miss the moonrise."

Before I could protest, Vera drew a white silk sash from behind her with a shy smile.

The guests broke into cheers.

"Take it, Silas. It's good luck!"

I gripped the crimson blood sash in my hands, my knuckles whitening.

Silas glanced at me.

There was no apology in his eyes, only a warning.

Then he took Vera's white silk sash.

Vera smiled through her tears.

"Silas, I wish you happiness."

Silas answered her in a low voice.

"Take care of yourself too."

This was my Blood Oath Ceremony, yet they looked more like star-crossed lovers than Silas and I had ever looked.

At least the time was almost up.

I slowly set down the crimson blood sash and turned to leave.

Silas finally snapped, grabbing my wrist.

His fingers closed directly over the burn.

I trembled with pain, my face draining of color.

He didn't let go. His voice dropped to a hiss.

"With everyone here tonight, do you really have to humiliate me?"

The tears finally fell.

"I'm fighting for my place in my own ceremony."

Silas's expression faltered for a second.

Vera suddenly leaned forward from her wheelchair, as if to intervene, and crashed to the ground.

The room erupted.

Silas released me, lunged for Vera, and gathered her into his arms. Then he roared at me.

"Evelyn, that's enough!"

I stood in place, my wrist red and swollen, my robe stained with mud, the crimson sash at my feet.

"The ceremony is over for tonight."

Silas bit out each word.

"It won't resume until you're willing to apologize to Vera!"

Seven years of waiting, only to end like this.

I slowly unfastened the obsidian cuff link from my sleeve and set it on the ground.

"Fine. Then the wedding's off."

Silas froze.

"You wouldn't dare!"

He came after me and clamped a hand around my wrist.

"If you walk out tonight, I'll act like you never set foot in the Laine house—"

Before he could finish, a row of headlights blazed to life at the end of the red carpet.

A convoy of black cars pulled up. Doors opened, and someone strode up the rain-slick stone steps.

"Evelyn."

"I've come to marry you."

No one spoke.Vera stood before the brazier, her hands suspended in midair. She had frozen too.The blanket slid from her knees to the ground. The legs she'd claimed were too painful to move held her steady in the wet mud.The elderly housekeeper was the first to react."Your legs..."The color drained from Vera's face bit by bit.She tried to sit back in the wheelchair. But it was too late. The doctor Theodore had brought stepped forward, blocking her way."Vera, if you can stand, the examination will be much easier."Vera shrieked, "Don't touch me!"This time, Silas didn't shield her.He stood rooted in place, as if everything inside him had been hollowed out.Vera turned to him."Silas, say something for me."Silas raised his eyes."How many lies have you told me?"Vera's lips moved. No sound came out.A gust swept into the tent, lifting ash from the burned sash. They settled on the red carpet like a belated funeral.Silas suddenly walked toward me.Theodore stepped in his way.Sila

The hum of the heater in the tent was faint. After Vera's confession, even Silas couldn't make a sound. She looked at me, the corner of her mouth slowly lifting."Because I told him where you were."I gripped the edge of the bed and stood."You knew I was in the woods?"Vera smiled."You were impossible to miss: a Harbor City heiress in ill-fitting boots, blundering straight into Blackpine Woods without even recognizing a hunter's silver tripwire.""Of course I knew."Silas stepped forward."Vera, explain yourself."Vera turned to him. The manufactured softness was finally gone from her eyes."Haven't I made it clear enough?""Seven years ago, I found her first.""She was already unconscious, clutching her phone to her chest with Theodore's unanswered messages filling the screen."My breath caught.Theodore looked up too.Vera went on. "I took her phone and threw it into Black Creek.""Then I went back and told you she was at the North Cemetery."All the blood drained from Silas's face

The convoy didn't leave right away.Theodore had me brought to a medical tent set up just outside the manor. There was a heater, clean gauze, and a small bed made up with white sheets.I sat on the edge of the bed.Warmth slowly returned to my fingertips, but my chest felt ice-cold.Vera's question lodged in my mind like a splinter. Why had Theodore come?Seven years ago, I ran from the engagement and humiliated the Blackthorn family. He should hate me.At the very least, Theodore should not have come through the rain with a marriage contract and a doctor to bring me home. The doctor wrapped my hand again."Mr. Blackthorn has come to Ravenmist every year since you left."I looked up.Her hands stilled, as if she'd just realized she'd said too much."What for?"The tent flap lifted.Theodore walked in."To find you."I stared at him.He set a cup of hot water beside me."The St. Clair family told me not to say anything. Your father was worried that if you knew, you'd be even less willin

The headlights outside the manor were blinding. My hands were still shaking when I got into the car.The doctor cut open my sleeve and hissed at what she saw."Who made you carry scalding sweet blood wine?"I looked at the raw, blistered skin and suddenly felt the absurdity of it all.Only moments before the ceremony, I'd been wondering whether the obsidian cuff link at my wrist looked right. Now that hand hurt too much to even make a fist.Theodore sat across from me. His voice was quiet."Let's treat the burn first."When the antiseptic touched the wound, I recoiled from the sting. He slipped a hand beneath my wrist without touching the wound, supporting it just enough to steady the shaking."Look at me."I looked up.There was no pity in his eyes. There was only a cold, unshakable steadiness."Evelyn, you don't have to prove how much you can endure tonight."That sentence hurt more than the medicine.I bit my lip and held the tears back.Silas came running after us.He wore no cloak

The hall went silent the moment Theodore said it.His offer wasn't what silenced them.It was because the people behind him entered through the rain bearing a marriage contract of black parchment lettered in gold. The oldest among them unfolded the document. His voice was quiet, yet it silenced every whisper in the hall."Evelyn, the eldest daughter of Harbor City's St. Clair family, became engaged to Theodore Blackthorn seven years ago. The marriage contract was never dissolved, and the betrothal settlement was never returned.""We have come to escort Ms. St. Clair home to Harbor City and see the marriage contract fulfilled.""Anyone who stands in our way will be treated as attempting an abduction."The guests' expressions shifted instantly.Even Vera's crying stopped.Silas's grip on my hand hadn't loosened.Theodore's gaze fell on his knuckles."Let her go."Silas scoffed."This is Ravenmist, not your Harbor City. Evelyn is my woman."Theodore stepped closer.Raindrops struck the sh
