MIRANDA

"Are you crazy, Miranda?" Ramone asked, covering his little friend.

I pointed at him and then at the thing whimpering in the corner of the room. I bit my lip, overwhelmed by the disappointment of what my sister had done. My own flesh and blood.

I don't know why I was surprised. After all, I had already been betrayed by my own "mother." I just didn't expect Amanda to be capable of doing this to me... Honestly, I would have rather been cheated on with my slutty neighbor who was always throwing herself at Ramone than with her...

That familiar lump began to form in my throat, a sign that long hours of crying and uncontrollable sobbing were coming, and it was getting worse by the second. In a futile attempt to keep my emotions in check, I looked at Ramone.

Feeling my heart bleed the entire time, I couldn't stand to look at her and see her honey-blonde hair in the total mess of someone who had just been fucked. Looking at her made this nightmare more real and unbearable.

Suppressing the sadness and heartbreak into a cold calm, I controlled my breathing and, with nerves of steel, remembered what my dad always used to say.

"Never lose focus, control your body and your emotions."

And that is exactly what I did. With steady hands, I pointed that small but deadly weapon back at my "ex-fiance." The years of training at Aunt Zelda's small farm in Texas came to mind, all the target practice and basic self-defense that Richard Taylor, an Army Sergeant of the First Battalion, had taught his little girl so she would know how to defend herself when necessary. I immediately gripped the gun properly so the recoil wouldn't hurt me, and cleared my mind.

Thinking or feeling were for later. I gestured toward his things with a nod of my head, and with a low voice, I said:

"Both of you, grab your things and get out of my house."

"Your house?" Ramone asked cynically, but as soon as he saw me flick off the safety, he swallowed hard and said with a hint of fear, "Honey, put that down. Let's talk. Don't do anything hot-headed."

His voice was soft, as if trying to calm a wild beast.

Little did he know that this beast was untamable.

"In less than thirty minutes, I want you, you piece of shit, and this..." Not finding a word to call her, I said the first thing that came to mind. "...thing out of my house."

"Miranda..." my younger sister said quietly.

I felt my body go rigid. Her soft voice, instead of bringing out my protective sisterly side, did nothing. That side of me didn't exist anymore. I looked at her, and whatever she saw in my expression brought more tears to her eyes as she cried copiously. My little sister, the one I sacrificed so much for so she could have everything she wanted when our mother abandoned us as kids. The girl I gave up my own wants for so our dad could give her what she wanted. The one who made me take on the role of "mother" since I was a little girl, died right there in that instant. I didn't kill her. Amanda didn't need me to put a bullet between her eyes to die; she just needed to screw my fiance. A bitter smile tugged at my lips.

Ex-fiance now. I wouldn't marry that man for all the money in the world. Looking into those gray eyes that showed regret and guilt for what he did, my heart didn't waver in the slightest. Even before this, I didn't feel love for him anymore, just a passion that satisfied me in bed, and his body and pretty face played a big part in that. After all, imagination is everything.

Now, not even that could erase what happened here. Ramone had managed to destroy whatever feelings I had ever had for him. Imagining being touched by him turned my stomach in the worst way possible.

"What are you waiting for? Get out of my sight," I asked dryly.

"Miranda, baby, I... look, you can't blame me! This is entirely your fault that this happened!" Ramone said, pulling on his pants.

"Mine?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. "How exactly is this my fault? Did I force you to stick your little dick in my sister?" I scoffed.

"Honey, it was six weeks! Six weeks! What did you expect me to do?"

Amanda looked shocked at Ramone, and if this whole situation wasn't so bizarre, I would have laughed until my stomach hurt. How could this idiot be so cynical?

"NOT SCREW MY FUCKING SISTER!"

"Miranda..."

"Enough," I growled, looking at Amanda, who was frowning in disgust seeing my "ex-fiance" acting as if she were entirely to blame for this. I couldn't hold back a sarcastic smile when I said, "Take a good look, Amanda. This is the bastard you spread your legs for; to him, you were nothing but a placeholder."

Amanda looked at me, her light green eyes welling with tears, her cheeks flushed with shame. Something deep down in my heart ached at the pain I saw there. A fleeting desire to hug her and murmur soft words, telling her everything would be okay, passed as quickly as it came. Before that stone wall I built around my heart could crumble, before I lost my mind, I said for the last time:

"When I get back, I don't want to see you here."

Leaving that house, getting into the car, slamming on the gas, and running over the neighbor's garden gnome, the only refuge I could think of in that moment was the person I counted on for both the good and bad times.

My best friend, Andrea.

LORENZO At the end of the interview, I evaluated the profile of the last candidate: a blonde with icy blue eyes that looked more like sharp blades as she stared at me resolutely, and she was the one who caught my attention the most. I walked around her, evaluating her body. Her blonde hair was short, three fingers below her shoulders. She was tall, probably about five foot eight, thin, a serious demeanor for an angelic face, a round, firm ass, and narrow hips. She definitely did not have kids. Well, that is good. Having kids while working in this kind of career was complicated... I stopped in front of her. Her beauty was indeed enchanting, but those stormy eyes said otherwise; the devil hiding in the shadows was lurking, ready to be unleashed. The mocking smile she gave, and her superior look of someone who does not get rattled, was of a natural dominatrix. I grabbed the folder with her data: her health insurance, exams, age, name; in short, everything I needed to know about her

MIRANDA "I cannot believe she hit you!" I said indignantly. I touched the marks of Manuela's five fingers on Fernanda's cheek, immediately pulling my hand away for fear of hurting her. "Why did you not slap the bitch right back? I would break someone's face for less!" exclaimed Andreia. Fernanda sighed and frowned. "Guys, I do not know if you noticed, but I was inside a luxury restaurant. If I made a scene, I would end up arrested!" she muttered, taking off the glasses and handing them to me. "I expect to be rewarded for this!" she demanded. I exchanged looks with Andreia. "Of course, how do you want to be rewarded?" I asked hesitantly. I would not complain if she asked for money; after all, we asked a lot of her just to leave her in the dark. And besides, she was not even pressing for information. She deserved a treat. "Whatever it is you are planning for that cow, do not show any mercy!" Fernanda said, touching her reddened cheek. Andreia gave a devilish smile as she state

MARLON Of all the ways I imagined the topics to be discussed at lunch, it ended up exceeding my expectations. First of all, Emma was not there, which besides being wonderful was worrying because I had no idea what was being plotted at that exact minute. But not letting myself get carried away by worry, the lunch went wonderfully well, the mood was light and irrelevant, and to top it off with a golden key, my father decided to surprise me. I simply could not believe it! But there it was, right in front of me, everything I ever dreamed of and now needed more than anything to put into practice what I planned to get rid of Manuela. But the question that would not be silenced was: Why? I stared at the papers on the table with a knot forming in my throat. I ran my hand over it and tried to clear my thoughts. My father was passing the presidency of Wenecker Enterprise to me. Everything I dreamed of and worked for was about to come true, and all I had to do was sign the transfer papers.

FERNANDA"Wait. WHAT?" Desperate, I looked at Miranda, searching for any trace of amusement, anything that could show they were messing with me. But the seriousness with which they stared at me made it impossible to deny. "Why can't you guys do it? Why does it have to be me?" I asked. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Andreia roll her eyes, but she continued her watch. "Because you are discreet, and she doesn't know you," Andreia said dryly. "I could even go myself to save the saliva of asking you to do it, but there's a chance the detective mentioned my friendship with Miranda." Detective? What kind of shit did you get yourselves into?! I wanted to ask them, but I held back. Would I be able to do what they asked me? No. I don't go unnoticed; I'm too clumsy for that. Not to mention that when I get nervous I have an annoying tic of stuttering. If I get caught, I won't be able to hide what I did and it would all be useless. Because I would definitely get caught. "Look, you do

FERNANDA "... so what do you think? Nanda?" Miranda asked, pulling me from my daydreams. I blinked a few times, returning to reality, and turned my attention to her. That was when I realized the scenery around me. Only then did I startle. Since when did I get in that car? I looked around, astonished. Jesus! The company vanished! I turned to Miranda, ready to ask what the hell happened, where the company was, and how on earth we were in a car heading to who knows where, but I stopped myself. Miranda's eyes were narrowed, and her forehead was wrinkled in concern. "Are you okay?" she asked, taking her hand off the steering wheel and touching my forehead. After checking my temperature, she put her hand back on the wheel. "You are spacing out." Should I lie, or opt for the truth? Depending on the answer, I felt it would cost me a lot, so I chose the one that suited me best. "I am... I just have a lot on my mind." "Hmm..." Her eyes scanned my face for a brief moment; her attent

MIRANDA I read and reread the exam result. Marlon's eyes were glassy, and a goofy, doting father smile was about to break out. Oops; it was already there! How did I know the meaning of the smile? Mr. Ricardo was the answer. He always smiled that way when the subject involved his daughters, and now Marlon had the same smile knowing he would be the father of two boys. Two boys. Despite the idea of being pregnant still being terrifying—not because it haunts me, far from it—what really scares me is the place where the babies intend to come out. I imagine what my vagina will look like afterward, and that is not pleasant at all. I leave the imagination of where they will come out, or thinking about the pain of labor and how much pain I would have to endure. Everything that occupied my thoughts were the two children who were being created by me. Two boys. I looked at my slightly swollen belly. Despite not feeling any discomfort, like morning sickness or fatigue, my body was alr
