Elyra didn’t realize how tired she was until she stepped into her room.

The silence of the Vale mansion felt different at night. During the day, it was grand, almost intimidating. But now, it felt… watchful. Like the walls themselves were holding secrets.

She closed the door behind her and leaned against it for a moment, exhaling slowly.

Today had changed something.

What started as simple “errors” in reports no longer felt accidental. There was a pattern—careful, intentional. Someone was testing the system.

Or worse… testing her.

She pushed the thought away and walked toward her desk, placing her files down. Her fingers hovered over the report she had worked on all day. Something about it still bothered her.

A detail she couldn’t ignore.

Frowning slightly, she opened her laptop again.

“Just one last look,” she murmured to herself.

Minutes passed. Then more.

The house grew quieter.

Her eyes scanned line after line of data, until suddenly

she froze.

There.

A transaction.

It wasn’t just a misentry. It had been edited. Cleanly. Almost perfectly. But not enough to escape notice completely.

Someone had redirected a small amount of funds through layered accounts. Not large enough to trigger alarms.

But enough to test if anyone was paying attention.

Elyra’s pulse quickened.

“This isn’t a mistake…” she whispered.

Before she could think further, a sudden flicker hit the screen.

Her laptop blinked.

Once.

Twice.

Then it shut down.

Elyra stared at it, confused.

“No… no, that’s not possible.”

She pressed the power button.

Nothing.

A chill ran down her spine.

That wasn’t normal.

Her fingers tightened. Slowly, instinctively, she glanced toward the door.

The room was still.

Too still.

A faint unease settled deep in her chest.

Someone didn’t want her to see that.

The next morning, Elyra arrived earlier than usual.

Sleep had been restless. The incident with her laptop replayed in her mind again and again. She hadn’t told anyone—not yet. She needed to be sure.

As she stepped into the office, the usual rhythm of work had already begun.

But something felt… off.

Her desk.

She slowed.

The files she had neatly arranged the previous evening were slightly out of place. Not messy. Just… moved.

Subtly.

Her heartbeat picked up.

“Looking for something?”

The voice came from behind her.

Elyra turned quickly.

Zevarion.

He stood a few steps away, watching her—not casually, but sharply. Like he had already noticed her reaction.

“I…” she hesitated. “No. Just thought I misplaced something.”

His gaze didn’t leave her.

“You’re not the type to misplace things.”

It wasn’t a question.

Elyra swallowed.

“I worked late last night. Maybe I’m just tired.”

A pause.

Then, quietly—

“Did something happen?”

The way he asked it… it wasn’t cold this time.

It was direct. Focused.

Concerned.

Elyra blinked, caught off guard.

For a second, she considered telling him everything—the laptop, the transaction, the strange feeling that someone was watching.

But Victor’s voice echoed in her mind.

“Never let charm cloud your judgment.”

And suddenly, she wasn’t sure who to trust.

“I’ll check again,” she said instead, keeping her tone steady.

Zevarion studied her for a moment longer. Then he stepped closer.

Too close.

Elyra’s breath hitched slightly.

“You noticed something yesterday,” he said, voice low. “More than you said.”

It wasn’t an accusation.

It was certainty.

Her fingers tightened around the file in her hand.

“I’m still verifying.”

A brief silence stretched between them.

Then—

“Good,” he said.

Not dismissive.

Approving.

His gaze lingered for a second longer than necessary before he stepped back.

“Report to my office once you’re done.”

And just like that, he walked away.

Elyra stood there, her heart racing.

That was different.

The day moved faster than expected.

Too fast.

By mid-morning, Elyra was called into a departmental review meeting. Senior staff filled the room, tension hanging thick in the air.

Victor was there.

Of course he was.

He greeted her with the same warm smile.

“Elyra. You look tired. Working too hard?”

She forced a small smile.

“Just trying to keep up.”

His eyes flickered—just for a second.

“As you should.”

The meeting began.

Reports were presented. Numbers discussed.

Everything seemed normal.

Until—

“Elyra,” Zevarion’s voice cut through the room. “Present your findings from yesterday.”

All eyes turned to her.

Her pulse spiked.

She stood, steadying herself.

“There were inconsistencies in the financial logs,” she began. “At first, they appeared to be minor errors. But on closer inspection, they follow a pattern—”

“Pattern?” one of the executives interrupted.

Elyra nodded.

“Yes. Repeated adjustments. Small enough to avoid detection, but consistent in structure.”

A murmur spread across the room.

Zevarion didn’t react.

Victor, however, smiled.

“Are you suggesting internal manipulation?” he asked gently.

The tone was soft.

But the question was sharp.

Elyra met his gaze.

“I’m suggesting we investigate further.”

Silence fell.

For a moment, no one spoke.

Then Zevarion leaned forward slightly.

“We will,” he said.

Final. Decisive.

The meeting moved on—but the atmosphere had changed.

Something had been set in motion.

Later that evening, as Elyra stepped out of the building, her phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

She frowned.

For a second, she hesitated.

Then she answered.

“Hello?”

Silence.

Then

A voice.

Distorted.

Low.

“You’re noticing too much.”

Elyra froze.

Her grip tightened on the phone.

“Who is this?” she demanded.

A soft chuckle.

“Be careful, Mrs. Vale.”

The line went dead.

Elyra stood there, heart pounding.

The world around her felt suddenly louder. Sharper.

Danger wasn’t subtle anymore.

It was real.

And it was close.

That night, she didn’t go to her room immediately.

Instead, she turned toward the study.

She needed answers.

And there was only one person who might already know more than he was saying.

She knocked.

“Come in.”

Zevarion’s voice.

Calm. Controlled.

Elyra pushed the door open.

He looked up from his desk, eyes narrowing slightly at the sight of her.

“You should be resting.”

“I got a call,” she said.

No hesitation this time.

Something shifted in his expression.

“From who?”

“I don’t know. But they knew I was looking into the reports.”

Silence.

Heavy.

Then Zevarion stood.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

And for the first time since she met him—

His calm slipped.

“From now on,” he said, voice colder than she had ever heard it, “you don’t go anywhere alone.”

Elyra blinked.

“That’s not necessary—”

“It is.”

He stepped closer.

Closer than ever before.

His eyes locked onto hers.

“This is no longer just a company issue.”

A pause.

Then, quieter—

“You’re part of it now.”

Elyra’s heartbeat echoed in her ears.

Something had changed.

The game was no longer subtle.

And neither was the danger.
