Chapter 27 – Still His

Sunlight sliced diagonally across the big windows of the suite, and long golden stripes fell across the tangled sheets.

Sera woke up in pain.

Ache in parts she hadn't even known were capable of hurting.

Her body bore its evidence of him — red marks on her hips, pink bruises on her wrists, the throbbing between her legs.

And the hot, shameful wetness still trickling from her.

Evidence of what he'd done to her.

Evidence of how she'd *let* him.

---

Valerio wasn't by her side.

The bed was still warm where he'd lain, but he was gone.

Sera's chest constricted — idiotic, foolish disappointment sweeping through her.

**Good,** she said to herself.

Good that he wasn't here.

Good that she had a chance to catch her breath, to *think.*

---

She slipped out of bed, grimacing at the tenderness, and made her way to the bathroom.

Avoided looking into the mirror.

She already knew what she'd see.

Messy hair.

Bruised lips.

A haunted, sated look in her own eyes.

---

The shower blasted hot water over her sk

The ballroom of the Ravello estate had never witnessed such quiet tension. The air shimmered with anticipation, velvet curtains drawn to trap the secrets inside, and candlelight casting gold and shadow on polished marble. Sera stood at the center of it all—no longer the girl who’d once hidden behind Valerio’s shadow, but a woman cloaked in authority, vengeance, and dangerously earned poise. She wore crimson tonight, the deep red silk hugging her curves, cinched at the waist with a golden chain that shimmered like blood and fire. The neckline dipped low, daring any man to speak to her as anything less than sovereign. And they didn’t. The new alliances Valerio had secured stood in wary circles, hushed and respectful, while the old families whispered from their corners, waiting for the fault lines to crack. But she wouldn’t break. Not tonight.Valerio’s voice cut through the hum of conversation, dark and commanding. “Lucrezia’s men have been spotted near the eastern district. She’s not h

The sun broke through the horizon like a whispered promise. Eros was waking up, unaware that its underworld had shifted. The queen had fallen. The king remained. But beside him now stood a woman crowned in ash and blood.Sera sat at the wide window in Valerio's bedroom, wrapped in his silk robe, her damp hair coiled into a loose bun. Below the balcony, the garden was quiet, save for the sound of fountains and morning doves. Her fingers traced the edge of the teacup on the sill, but her thoughts were far away.Last night, she killed Lucrezia. Not just to end the threat, but to end the nightmare. There was power in that. But there was also a sharp ache behind her ribs, an echo of the girl she used to be. The one who flinched at shadows and held her breath around men. That girl had died, too, somewhere in the chaos.Valerio approached her from behind, his bare chest warm as he pressed against her back. He wrapped his arms around her waist and kissed the curve of her neck. "You didn’t sle

The villa was eerily quiet when Sera awoke. The sheets still smelled of Valerio—cigars, bourbon, and sin—but his side of the bed was cold. She stretched, the ache between her thighs a delicious reminder of last night’s tangled passion, then reached for her robe.Outside, the sun was rising in golden streaks across the sea. But she wasn’t fooled by the beauty. Beneath that calm shimmer, war was brewing.Downstairs, she found Valerio already suited up, standing in front of the wide glass window with a phone pressed to his ear and tension bracketing his shoulders.“No,” he barked. “If Dario so much as hesitates, I want him removed. We’re too deep for second guesses.”He hung up and turned, his eyes darkening when he saw her.“You should be sleeping.”She approached slowly, wrapping her arms around his waist from behind. “You left a warm bed. I got lonely.”“I didn’t want to wake you. Things are... escalating.”“Then let’s escalate harder.”He turned in her arms, eyes flickering over her

The air inside the De Rossi villa was sharp with tension and veiled hostility. Ornate tapestries and crystal chandeliers glittered above the long table, but the elegance couldn’t disguise the stench of betrayal that clung to every breath.Sera sat beside Valerio like a queen on a throne of daggers, her chin high, her eyes cold. Her black gloves made her look like a shadow given form, a perfect reflection of the man beside her—except she smiled more ruthlessly.Across from them, Luca fidgeted. He was thinner than she remembered, worn down by guilt or greed—or both."You've been busy," Valerio said, tone casual but laced with iron. "Meeting with enemies behind my back. Selling secrets."Luca's jaw tensed. "I never meant to betray you.""Then you did it by accident?" Sera asked, tilting her head. "That's even worse."One of the De Rossi elders spoke up. "We made Luca an offer. One he considered out of survival, not malice. The tides of power shift, Mr. Mancini."Valerio leaned forward sl

The morning after the ambush was a strange sort of quiet. Not the peaceful kind—no, it was the silence that followed a scream. The kind that settled into your bones and refused to leave.Sera stared out the window of Valerio's penthouse, the skyline of Verona burning gold in the early light. Below, the city began to stir—cars, distant sirens, life trudging forward. But up here, in the glass tower above it all, her world had shifted. The monster was dead. Gianluca was finally gone. And yet, a tight coil of unease still knotted in her chest. She hadn’t slept. Neither had Valerio. After their bodies had given in to each other in the wake of chaos, they'd lain tangled in silk sheets, hearts beating erratically, eyes wide open. It wasn't over. Not yet.A soft rustle behind her made her glance over her shoulder. Valerio stood shirtless in black pajama pants, a glass of water in his hand, watching her with those sharp, silver eyes that missed nothing."You're not really here with me," he sai

The rain fell hard over the city, streaking down the windows of the penthouse like silver bullets. Inside, the tension was thicker than the storm clouds, every second pulsing with anticipation. Valerio stood at the bar, swirling a glass of whiskey between his fingers, the amber liquid catching fire under the dim light.Sera watched him from the velvet armchair across the room. He hadn’t said a word since the call—just a name.Gianluca.She could still hear the venom in Valerio’s voice, still feel the tremor in the room when he’d hurled his phone across it. A rival capo. A ghost from Valerio’s blood-soaked past. And now, apparently, a threat reborn.“He was supposed to be dead,” Valerio muttered, mostly to himself.“But he’s not,” Sera said quietly. “Which means someone helped him crawl out of whatever grave you left him in.”Valerio turned slowly, his eyes dark, rimmed with old fury. “He trafficked girls like livestock. Burned villages. Took children.” His jaw ticked. “I did what had
