The cold of the Verona air followed them as they made their way to the chapel that Dario had told them about. It was at the far end of the estate, flanked by cypress trees that groaned in the wind, their shadows extending long and foreboding in the moonlight. The building was old, its stones weathered with centuries of secrets and sin.

Valerio held Sera's hand tightly, the other wrapped around the butt of his gun. Even with Dario guiding them, trust did not come easily.

"How far down does it go?" Valerio ordered, staring at the chapel's weathered interior.

"Under the altar," Dario whispered, his eyes darting up to the worn crucifix that hung above. "There's a trapdoor, hidden by the marble. My father and I would use it when we had to. store things."

Sera swallowed, her nerves tightening. The air was colder in here, unnaturally so. She felt it in her bones, in the way her skin prickled.

"You’re sure no one else knows about this?" she asked.

Dario hesitated. "Only Lucrezia. But she beli

Sera stood at the edge of the rooftop garden, the wind teasing strands of her hair, the scent of blooming night jasmine curling around her. Below, Eros City sparkled in decadent golds and deep violets, but it felt like a kingdom burning—hers and Valerio’s. A kingdom built on secrets, lies, lust... and now, truth.Behind her, Valerio was on the phone again, voice clipped, every word etched in steel.“They moved the shipment ahead of schedule. Romano thinks he’s clever, but I want the docks under surveillance. Every man loyal to me, I want them ready.”He ended the call and turned. His black shirt was half-unbuttoned, the first two revealing a line of tattoos that disappeared beneath the fabric. His face was tight, like stone under pressure.Sera didn’t ask what the call was about. She already knew. The mole was identified. The traitor was his blood.“I told you,” she said quietly. “You were right not to trust him.”Valerio’s jaw clenched. “He’s my cousin. Luca. My mother raised him aft

The silence in the opera house was deafening.Sera’s hand trembled as the ring settled into place, glinting like a curse under the fractured sunlight. Cael’s expression barely shifted, but the twitch in his jaw gave him away. His cane clicked once against the marble floor—a heartbeat too loud.Valerio’s voice remained unflinching. “You came for power. You walked into this place thinking you still had leverage. But now she’s mine. Fully. Legally. Publicly.”“You married her?” Cael asked quietly.“No,” Valerio said, turning toward Sera. “But I will. And the entire city will watch.”Sera's breath caught in her throat. This wasn’t part of the plan. At least... not the way he said it. His tone wasn’t strategic. It was dangerous. Personal.Cael’s gloved hand curled into a fist on top of his cane.“Do you know what I hate about you, Thorne?” he whispered, voice laced with venom. “You think everything can be owned. You think a ring changes what’s underneath.”“I don’t own her,” Valerio replie

The world outside Valerio’s fortress slept beneath a blanket of darkness, but inside the penthouse, sleep was a foreign concept. Sera stood in the middle of the room wrapped in one of Valerio’s crisp white shirts, her bare legs trembling slightly from the chill—not just of the air, but of something deeper. Something crawling beneath her skin. The collar still sat on the counter, a crimson coil of threat.Valerio hadn’t spoken for almost twenty minutes. Not since he crushed his glass against the wall and stood with both hands braced on the marble kitchen island, head bowed, shoulders stiff with the promise of violence.Sera walked slowly toward him. “Say something.”He didn’t move. She reached out, fingers brushing the tattoo on his neck, the one that curved from his collarbone up behind his ear—Latin script she still hadn’t deciphered. It twitched under her touch like a live wire.“Valerio.”His voice was low. Controlled. Too controlled. “He doesn’t just want to kill me anymore. He wa

The glow of dawn bled through the blackout curtains, but neither Sera nor Valerio moved from the tangled sheets. The air was thick with the weight of things unsaid, with the fading pulse of what had happened between them—a kind of surrender that went deeper than skin.Sera stirred first. Her wrists ached from where his tie had held her last night, a soft bite of pressure that still lingered like a brand. She looked at the man sleeping beside her—his chest rising slow, lips slightly parted, a furrow still etched between his brows even in rest. Valerio Thorne. Her tormentor. Her protector. Her ruin. And her only salvation. She slid out of bed quietly, padding to the bathroom. The moment the door clicked shut, Valerio’s eyes opened. He wasn’t a man who slept through silence. Especially not now.He sat up, running a hand through his unruly dark hair, tension already creeping back into his shoulders like a second skin. Last night had been a release, yes—but it had also been a vow. He’d cla

The scent of smoke clung to Sera’s skin as they returned from the rooftop chaos. Her hands trembled slightly, hidden in the pockets of Valerio’s leather coat. The compound was eerily silent when they arrived. Word hadn’t spread yet about Lucia’s betrayal—or her plea for redemption.Sera had barely crossed the threshold of their room when Valerio locked the door behind them. His presence was suffocating in the best way, heat rippling off him like waves in a storm.“We’re going to find the boy,” he said, his voice low, sharp with purpose. “If Cael is using children as pawns now, he’s more desperate than I thought.”Sera nodded, pulling the coat tighter around herself.Valerio stepped closer, his eyes dark and unreadable. “You saw what I almost did to her.”“Yes,” Sera said. “But you didn’t. That matters.”A long silence stretched between them, the kind that buzzed beneath the skin. Then Valerio stepped forward, cupping her face. His thumb brushed her cheekbone, as if grounding himself i

  • Velvet Chains   Chapter 136 – The Devil’s War Room

The drive back from the Mirage Casino was silent, tension wrapped around them like smoke. Valerio kept one hand on the wheel, the other on his gun, knuckles white. Sera sat beside him, eyes fixed on the rain-slicked streets as Eros City blurred past the windows. Her pulse hadn't slowed since the ambush. Neither had his. They said nothing until they reached the estate.Valerio’s private compound was on full lockdown—armed guards doubled at the gates, surveillance drones sweeping the perimeter, and Matteo waiting by the front door, blood still on his sleeve."It was a setup," Matteo growled. "Cael Delacroix never came alone. He had two snipers on the east building. We didn’t even spot them."Valerio's jaw clenched. "We underestimated him. Never again."Sera followed them into the war room—a vast, windowless space below the main house with concrete walls, tactical maps, and screens showing every inch of the city.Valerio shed his coat, grabbed a bottle of scotch, and poured himself a gla
