The dawn broke over the kingdom of Silvermoon in shades of soft gold and pastel pink, washing away the shadows of the council's defeat. The throne room had been cleared, but the morning air still carried the crisp, charged static of the Moonstone’s awakening.

In the high council chamber, Cassian stood at the center of the massive round table. Surrounding him were the remaining loyal lords, clan elders, and high officials of the realm.

I stood near the arched entryway, my hand resting gently over my stomach. The warm, steady pulse of the ancient royal energy hummed contentedly beneath my skin, completely in sync with the soft heartbeat of the child growing inside me.

Cassian didn't look at the lords. He pulled a thick document out from his coat pocket.

It was our contract.

The parchment was slightly worn at the edges, bearing my neat signature at the bottom alongside the official wax seal of the Alpha King.

"Your Majesty," Lord Vance, a senior elder, spoke up cautiously. "Now that the traitorous faction has been removed, we must formalize the custody and guardianship terms of the unborn heir under the original surrogacy agreement…"

Cassian didn't let him finish.

With a smooth, deliberate motion, Cassian gripped the contract with both hands and tore it straight down the middle.

The loud, crisp sound of ripping parchment echoed through the silent chamber. He tore it again, and again, until the silver-inked clauses, the non-disclosure agreements, and the cold, transactional terms were reduced to nothing more than scrap paper. He let the pieces fall from his fingers, scattering across the polished mahogany table.

"There is no contract," Cassian declared, his baritone voice firm and resonant. "The surrogacy arrangement is null and void."

"Sire!" Lord Vance gasped. "Without a legal bond…"

"Lilian Hart owes this kingdom nothing," Cassian interrupted, turning his gaze toward me. His icy blue eyes were completely clear, stripped of every wall, every fear, and every political calculation. "She owes me no child. She owes this court no marriage. She owes her life to no ancient law."

He walked away from the council table, stepping out of the circle of lords and coming straight toward me. The entire room held its breath, but Cassian didn't care about the elders anymore. His whole world had narrowed down to the space between us.

He stopped inches away, taking my hands in his. His palms were warm, broad, and steady.

"You came into my palace to save your family," Cassian said softly, his voice meant only for my ears. "You signed a paper that treated your body as a transaction because you were desperate and brave. I will not let your life be defined by a trap I helped build."

"Cassian..." I whispered, my voice trembling as my heart slammed against my ribs.

"The debt of your border pack is cleared permanently," he continued, his thumb gently caressing the back of my hand. "Your family’s land is restored. The money promised to you has already been transferred to your sister. You are entirely free, Lilian. If you want to walk out of these gates today, return to your home, and live your life without the burden of this crown, I will give you my full protection and never ask you to return."

I stared at him, my breath catching in my throat. "You're letting me go?"

"I am giving you your choice back," Cassian replied, his eyes shining with a profound, painful selflessness. "I loved my kingdom so much that I let it turn my heart into iron. But you brought me back to life. I will not force my mate to stay in a gilded cage. I want you only if you choose me freely not as a king, not as an Alpha, and not because of a contract."

Silence stretched between us, thick and heavy with emotion. The council members watched us in stunned stillness, waiting for my answer.

I looked at the shredded pieces of parchment resting on the table behind him. Then I looked into the face of the man standing before me the ruthless king who had bled for me, the broken warrior who had opened his soul to me, and the gentle protector who was willing to let me walk away just to ensure my happiness.

I took a breath and slid my fingers deeper into his grip, pulling his hands up against my chest, right over my pounding heart.

"You were wrong about one thing, Cassian," I said, a tear slipping down my cheek as a genuine, radiant smile broke across my face.

"What's that?" he asked softly.

"I didn't fall in love with the Alpha King," I whispered, lifting my gaze to meet his. "I fell in love with you. The man behind the crown. The man who protected me when he had every reason to lock his heart away."

Cassian froze, his breath hitching as my words sank in.

"I am not leaving," I said clearly, my voice echoing through the chamber so every lord in the kingdom could hear it. "I choose you. Not because of a mate bond, not because of my bloodline, and certainly not because of a piece of paper. I stay because I love you."

Cassian let out a shuddering sigh, the last lingering weight of his painful past finally breaking apart. He pulled me into his arms, wrapping his large frame around me with a fierce, possessive tenderness, burying his face in the crook of my neck.

"You have my heart, Lilian," he rasped against my skin, his body trembling with deep emotion. "Forever."

For the first time in six years, the Alpha King smiled a true, breathtaking smile reserved only for the woman who had taught him how to live again.
