Chapter 2

Existence
I wiped away my tears and opened the dashcam viewing app.

It was something Sienna had downloaded on my phone to ease my mind. I trusted her back then, so I never bothered to check it.

The screen loaded, showing the real-time feed.

The interior of the car was dim, but the audio was crystal clear.

"Sienna, this song is so good. How about we make it our song?"

"Sure, you're the boss."

Then came the rustle of clothes, followed by a chorus of nauseating gasps.

I tapped the download button.

Once my tears had dried, only an icy emptiness remained.

At dawn, Sienna came home. She looked exhausted, but there was a glaring red mark on her neck.

In an instant, Archie's music account avatar flashed across my mind. It was a picture of a cute puppy.

It looked docile, innocent, and harmless.

Just like him. He always looked at people shyly, easily stirring up a protective instinct in others.

That was why I'd softened and sponsored him.

Sienna had clearly gotten lost in that facade.

She often complained that I was "too much of a businessman" or "too domineering".

It wasn't until now that I realized what she really needed was someone who could worship her completely.

"Babe, I'm so tired. I didn't sleep all night to work on that proposal," she complained with her eyes closed, waiting for me to hand her the hot towel and cup of warm water, like I always did.

But I didn't move.

"Shawn?" She opened her eyes in confusion when the usual service didn't come.

I looked at her, my voice parched and hollow. "Why do you smell like river water?"

Sienna stiffened for a moment before sitting up and adjusting her hair.

"Oh, the project team went to the riverbank for some fresh air last night. We had supper there."

"Was Archie there too?" I asked.

Her gaze flickered, but she quickly regained her usual confident stance.

"Yeah, he's an intern, so he joined us to learn. Shawn, I'm really glad you introduced him to the company. He's hardworking, and everyone likes him."

She walked over, reaching for my hand.

"By the way, he keeps saying he wants to thank you for sponsoring him."

I pulled my hand away and replied flatly, "I sponsored him to help him get an education, not to have him spend late nights with my girlfriend watching river views."

Sienna's expression darkened. "Shawn Baker, what's that supposed to mean? How could you put it that way? Everything between us is strictly business!"

"Strictly business? Why did you sync your playlists 688 times in the dead of night, then?"

I tossed the printed music report on the coffee table.

The papers scattered, and Sienna's pupils constricted.

After a moment, she sighed, like she was dealing with a petulant child. "All this over that? Shawn, you're being way too sensitive.

"This account is also logged in on the company laptop. Sometimes, when Archie works late, he uses my account to listen to music to stay awake. What's the big deal? He's my intern. Do you want me to log out just for this?"

She looked up at me. Disappointment was heavy in her voice as she continued, "I've been working myself to the bone for our future, and you're here, sitting at home, nitpicking over a few music logs. Shawn, can you be a little more mature?"

Mature?

I curled my lips bitterly.

We had been together for five years. I'd stuck by her through thick and thin, from nothing to where we were now.

Every time I asked for stability and marriage, she'd tell me the company was still growing and that she couldn't give me the best.

I understood, compromised, and spent my best years waiting.

Now she was complaining that I wasn't mature enough and that I couldn't tolerate her crossing boundaries with another man.

I smiled. "You should go take a shower. You stink."

Thinking I had given in, Sienna sighed in relief and headed for the bathroom.

The sound of water from the shower started.

I picked up her phone.

The password was still my birthday, something she thought was a sign of deep affection.

I unlocked it and opened WhatsApp.

The pinned chat wasn't with me, but with a group called "Project Team: File Transfer".

There were only two people in the group—her and Archie.

Sienna and Archie were dismissed on the spot. When Archie was escorted out by security, he cried and begged, claiming that he had been deceived, but no one paid him any attention.Sienna, on the other hand, looked utterly defeated. Before leaving, she glared at me with malice. "Shawn, you'll regret being this ruthless!"I smiled. "What I regret the most is not seeing your true colors sooner."Once the company matters were handled, I didn't stop. I had promised to make them pay.I sent all the evidence I had collected, along with the surveillance footage, to Archie's college.Although Archie was an intern, he hadn't graduated yet.Such severe moral misconduct was enough to prevent him from obtaining his degree or even getting him expelled. At the same time, I officially filed a lawsuit.I sued Sienna for the return of the 800 thousand-dollar loan, and for the expensive gifts given during our relationship to be refunded.I also sued Archie for unjust enrichment, demanding the

As I read those words, a chill ran through me, and my fingertips trembled.Sienna, the woman I had loved for five years, had stabbed me in the back to protect another man.The group chat exploded in an instant, and the public opinion turned against me."Ms. Fletcher has spoken up. It must be true!""This is so low. How desperate is this guy for love?""Exactly! He's blaming the intern because he couldn't keep his own relationship together."As I read these comments, the lingering sentiment in my heart vanished. The next day, I walked into Sienna's office. As soon as I entered, I felt the eyes on me, and I heard the whispers."Hey, isn't that the romance-addict boyfriend?""He's hot, sure, but his head is in the gutter."I ignored the murmurs and walked straight into the conference room.Archie was sitting next to Sienna, his eyes red. When Sienna saw me, her brows furrowed, and her eyes were filled with disgust."Shawn, you have the nerve to show your face here? On our five-year anniversary, Sienna picked a fancy restaurant.Midway through the meal, the lights suddenly dimmed, and Sienna pulled out a velvet box and proposed to me.The crowd started to cheer, "Say yes! Say yes!"I stared at the box, which contained a ring. It looked shiny, but I could immediately tell that it was a moissanite, a cheap knockoff on some online store. She used my money to support her side guy while using a fake diamond ring to propose to me.It would be a lie if I said I wasn't hurt. I had given my all, and she was giving me false gestures in return."Shawn, thank you for staying with me these five years. This ring represents my love. It might not be worth much now, but I swear I'll get you a bigger one later."Sienna continued with deep affection, "As long as you add my name to the title deed, we'll be true partners in every sense. What's mine will be yours from now on."Finally, her true colors were showing.I took the mic, stood up, and smiled politely

The next morning, my phone buzzed. Archie had sent me two photos.I tapped on the images. The moment my eyes landed on the two red lines, my chest tightened. It was a picture of a pregnancy test kit, along with an ultrasound report bearing Sienna's name.Sienna was pregnant. As I stared at the photo, my eyes burned with tears.Throughout the past five years, I'd spent countless nights with Sienna in my arms, imagining a future where we'd have a daughter who looked like her or a son who resembled me.But every time I brought up having kids, she'd frown and push me away. "Shawn, not now. The company's not stable yet. We can't afford to raise a child."For her career, I stayed up late and attended business events with her.To keep her focused, I suggested we put off having children for a while.I even went to get a vasectomy, terrified that an accidental pregnancy would ruin her career. Then, Archie's message came through. "Shawn, I'm sorry. I didn't want this either. But Sienna

I moved into my friend Tyler Gordon's place. As soon as I walked in, he gave me a big hug and sighed. "Shawn, congrats. You've finally left that player and got your freedom back."The way he sighed made my nose tingle.Three years ago, when I insisted on selling the house my parents left me to fund Sienna's business, Tyler had pointed his finger at me and called me insane."Shawn! Your parents gave you this money so you'd never have to worry about anything, not to give it away to someone else! Sienna's a scheming woman. Only someone like you, who's never had to struggle, would believe in her struggling dreamer nonsense!"Back then, I was so confident. With my chin raised, my eyes were full of hope for the future as I said, "Tyler, she just needs a chance. I believe in her. Once she makes it, she'll treat me better than ever."Tyler laughed. "Even an heir who's never struggled will have to taste the bitterness of love."It turned out that he was right."Do you regret it?" Tyler

Sienna froze, then anger flashed across her face. "What now? Is it just because I helped Archie earlier? Shawn, can you stop being so petty? That was an emergency! His life was at stake!"I sneered. "His life was at stake because of a sprained ankle? Funny, I didn't see you that worried when I had my appendicitis surgery."Sienna went silent. Her frustration was clear as she tugged at her hair. "That was so long ago. Why are you bringing it up now? Haven't I treated you well enough? You even have my debit card—"I interrupted her with a laugh. "The bank card you gave me only receives 3,000 dollars a month. The real salary goes to another card, doesn't it? That card is bound to Archie's Amazon account, right?"Sienna's face went pale instantly. "H-How do you know?""The only way to keep a secret is to never commit the act in the first place."I stood up. "Sienna, I'm not stupid. You know how much I've spent on you over the years. Pay me back after we break up.""Are you crazy?" S
