“Are you insane?!”
Her high-pitched scream made me frown and pull the phone away from my ear slowly.
I have enough on my plate already, I don't need anyone scolding me right now.
“Hilda…” I started, but she cut me off right away.
“You are going to marry him? Do you know what that means?! You are getting committed for life!”
“It’s just for a few weeks, Emerald is going to wake up and then return to her place,” I explained to her.
“And what if she doesn’t wake up anytime soon? You can’t let your parents do this to you. They are selfish and you know they will never hesitate to use you over and over again as long as it benefits them. What about Aidan?! What about your dream?! The audition is coming up in a few months and marriage is definitely not what you should think of. Especially not to a person you don’t love. This is not a movie that…”
“Do you think I want this either?!”
I didn’t know when I yelled. With the way I had screamed, I am sure my voice could have traveled to the living room or my parents’ room.
It is not like I want to do this either. I don’t want to!
I have got no choice!
At twenty-six, I have nothing to myself except a car that Hilda had gifted me on my birthday early this year and that was all. Emerald was the managing director of our father’s company and I was left to be a stay-at-home daughter.
My father believed she could do better than me and I didn’t argue with them. I knew it was not going to be worth it.
Hilda was the only one who knew of my dream to be a model. She supported it, and I kept attending auditions hoping to get picked till I finally got a call two weeks back to come for the final audition which was going to be held in the next three months.
“You think I want to end up being a substitute wife for a man I know nothing about?! Do you think I wish for my dream to not come true? I have no choice! This is the least I could do. Someone else is going to suffer because of me and you think I want this for myself too?!”
I swept my hair to the back and cried profusely. I have been trying to hold it in. The little Hilda had said to me triggered it. I needed to cry, after all.
“I am being locked inside my room till I agree to what they want. I have to do it. I have no choice. Now, our family is holding on to me to save them,” I rolled my eyes and scoffed.
“What have they ever done for me too!”
“But what? I have no choice. I have to do it. Why? I have no choice. Am I insane? Yes! Call me whatever you want, I don’t care but I can’t let Aidan suffer for my stubbornness. I will forever blame myself if things go wrong for him. I…”
“Saphy, it’s alright. I am sorry, okay?” I heard her sniffing and I closed my eyes for a second.
“I will talk to you later,” with that, I ended the call and threw my phone on the bed. I walked to the bathroom, rinsed my face, and dabbed it with a face towel as I walked back to my room.
Sitting on the edge of my bed, I picked up my phone to dial my father’s number when Aidan’s call came in and I breathed out.
What do I tell Aidan? I don’t want him to get a whiff of what is going on at all. I hesitated for a while and then picked up the call.
“Babe, how’re you doing? Your number hasn’t been reachable. Are you okay? I’m in town, do you wanna meet?”
“Erm… Aidan, I… I am actually busy right now.” I breathed in and tightened my fist.
“Oh, really?”
I am sure he knew something was or might be wrong. I had never been too busy to meet him before.
“And I would get busier. I am traveling out of the country and it wouldn’t be so easy reaching you. I hope you understand…”
“Sapphire… Are you going through anything? You know you can talk to me, right?”
I wanted to cry again.
I knew that I could.
The least he was going to do was tell me to not marry that man and he didn't care if he lost his job. Like my conscience could ever accept that.
“I know, come on!” I faked a laugh.
“It’s just that… My father is opening a new branch and he wants me to oversee it. Good news, right?”
“Are you serious?! That is such good news! I am so happy for you. When are you leaving and when will you be back?”
“I… don’t know yet and I heard the reception over there is not very good so it would be hard to reach me.”
“Oh… Really?”
The eeriness in his voice was quite evident.
“I will be fine and back before you know it.”
A long silence ensued and I knew this man wasn’t cool with this, but I wouldn’t mind. I was doing this for him. For us.
“We will talk later… or?”
“Yeah… we should.”
***
“I am sorry ma’am, but Mr. Rodriguez ordered us not to let you out of the room.”
I rolled my eyes and swept my hair to the back. “You think I didn't hear that?! You know what, just bring him to me. Tell him I have an answer already.”
“But ma’am…”
“GET MY PARENTS HERE… RIGHT NOW!”
____
“Open the door.’’
I heard my father’s voice after a while and I stepped back a bit.
If you can’t beat them, join them… And that is what I am doing.
“What is going on? I hope you are not just wasting our time,” he said and I glanced at my mother who entered the room too.
“Surely, I am here to say only what you want,” I said and tugged my lips in a soft smile.
“Let’s have it.”
“Daniel… I will marry him,” I said and locked eyes with my father’s glittering eyes.
“You will?” He raised a brow and tilted his head.
“On one condition,” I shrugged my shoulders.
The excitement on his face vanished slowly and he snapped his brows together.
“You are going to place me… YOUR FATHER… on a condition?
He drew his words on purpose. Like he was reminding me of my place… where I originally belonged to.
Well, I don't care about that right now.
“No harm must befall Aidan.”
I said regardless. Whatever he thinks of himself doesn’t concern me.
“What?” he feigned ignorance, frowning.
“The moment anything happens to Aidan… I will tell Daniel everything. You know what that means, don’t you?” I raised a brow.
A shocked look registered on his face and he went mute for a few seconds. “I looked up the internet, I mean, I searched all crook and canny of the internet about this man and I don't think he his your average billionaire. That family is no joke,” I said, my eyes shooting daggers.
“Are you threatening me?”
‘‘Threatening you? Come on, papa. I wouldn’t do that. It is just a… erm… warning?” I smiled which definitely annoyed him more.
“You are insane,” he chuckled dryly and turned to look at my mother.
“You will not touch Aidan or The Prestons will know of this,” I said again.
“You won't leave unscathed either,” he raised a brow.
“Me? I have nothing to lose. I don't mind if we all die together!” I bursted into a faked loud laugh.
While he glared at me in annoyance, I glanced at my mother who looked half worried, and ran my hand through my hair.
“When will my wedding dress be ready?”
DANIEL’S POV.“Your wedding is tomorrow and you are in the office?!”I exhaled and rested my head on the headrest. “Dad, preparing for my marriage does not stop me from working, come on.”I can already imagine the distasteful look that must have gathered on his face after I said that. It is way too early to start talking about my upcoming marriage, does he not know that? One would think my parents were the ones getting married, not me.“It does! Do you not care about what people would think at all? You should be going around, trying to know your fiance better, but what? That is all you can do?”“When I was your age…”He started. I scratched in between my brows and breathed out. Here we go again…“I made sure your mother and I met every day during our wedding preparation. And that is one of the reasons we are still going strong even after thirty years of marriage. I made sure she had no other choice but to fall over and over for me. There was a time that…”“Dad, please,” I cut him of
“Oh, my! Did you lose weight, ma’am?”I glanced at the middle-aged woman who helped in putting the wedding dress on and then looked at my reflection in the big dressing mirror in front of me.The wedding is tomorrow and I am just trying out the dress.“W…why did you say that?” “The last time you came for the dress fitting. It was so tight that we had to loosen it a bit. That’s why…”“It’s the wedding stress.”I turned around gently as I watched my mum enter and said.Wedding stress? I chuckled slightly.“I think it runs in the family. I lost over three kg when I was preparing for my wedding too,” she said as a joke and the woman laughed too.“I can understand that so much! A lot of brides lost weight when preparing for their wedding. It’s fine, we can just adjust it quickly. Tomorrow is the wedding,” she looked at me and smiled.I looked at myself for the umpteenth time and curled my fist into a tight ball. This is indeed not what I had envisioned for myself.“I will pick another dre
“Why? She’s not picking up the call?” Liam looked at me and I nodded slightly.“I think she’s rethinking already. She probably knows what she is getting into and then thinks it is best to not get married. I understand her very much.”I turned my head slowly to look Liam’s direction but he looked away quickly. “You’re insane.”“You know I am right. If not, why is she not picking up? Didn’t you say that she used to pick up your call at the second ring?” He said and burst into laughter.I tilted my head gently and sighed. Taking another look at him, I dialed a number and waited for the receiver to pick up.“Sir.”“Find out where Emerald is, now,” I ordered, and ended the call before I could hear his answer.“Is that Alfredo? You want him to stalk YOUR FIANCE?!”Liam stressed his words intentionally and I wished right now this guy knew how irritated I was at the moment. At times, I wonder if he was truly my best friend because he acts exactly like an enemy. How could he always decide to n
I dropped my hand on my neck possessively and caressed it gently after his comment. “Oh… did I?”I gulped hard as he kept staring at my collarbone. After a while, he looked away and stared at the wedding dress that was on the floor again. “This… this was the wedding dress you sent to me saying you were in love with, is it not? He asked and then pinned his eyes on me.“It looked like the same design, no?”I hiccuped almost immediately he asked his question and then beaded my brows. Emerald has been updating him about the wedding. I took a quick glance at my mother and then looked at him again.“Is it?” I asked unconsciously and then bit my lower lips. What was I saying? The way I was acting was practically giving me away. Can you just get a grip on yourself already, Sapphire?“Okay, let’s try this on you now.”I breathed out in relief as soon as the designer entered and said.“Could you stay outside for a moment while the bride tries on her dress? I know you probably can’t wait to see
“Let go of me,” I forcefully wriggled away from his grasp and breathed heavily. He looked at my face carefully like he was studying it and right now, he looked like he had something he was going to say“You should get going,” I said hurriedly.“Of course, I should. The wedding is tomorrow, you know? I gotta prepare too,” he said.He looked around the room and I did too, and that was when we realized how many eyes were on us. He seemed like he didn’t care as he dipped one of his hands in his pocket and then turned to leave.“Ah…” he stopped abruptly and turned around again. “You don’t look so great in that dress. Are you going to preach the word of God at the wedding?” He inclined his head tauntingly.I frowned at his remark and before I could give a response, he turned around and walked out of the store so casually like he was the most gentle person on earth.Of course, he did seem like one, but I know a person like him also. He was a wolf in sheep’s clothing. The articles were eviden
EPISODE 11. MR AND MRS PRESTON.“Are you always curious about everything, Mr. Preston?” I blurted and raised a brow at him.“You don’t think I am…”“Now, let us begin,” The priest cut him short and I felt his hand tightened around me gently. This man right here definitely has an anger issue.“We all are gathered here, to witness the union of Emerald Rodriguez and Daniel Logan Preston..” he continued and then gestured to us to hold hands while he gave a speech about marriage.Daniel would not stop looking at me. He kept staring like he was expecting me to say something or make some mistake.Huh, like I would be a fool the second time. When we arrived home the previous day, my mother had narrated the incident that took place at the store to my father and it didn’t take long before he started raining his usual cold words at me. I probably would have been standing on the altar here with a red swollen face if my mother hadn't stopped him from hitting me.“What do you want people to
I watched the look on her face carefully and then instantly knew that she was not pleased with the idea of a honeymoon. It was not like I was either. After the wedding had ended, I had wanted to leave. However, I knew I dared not. My mother was going to make a huge deal out of it so I thought it was better to stay for a bit. When I had noticed the atmosphere, the party was running smoothly and my parents seemed to not mind where I might be, I rounded my discussion with the men in front of me and turned around to look at Emerald. She had been by my side the whole time and now, she’s nowhere to be found.I massaged my temple shortly, looked in the direction of her parents and when I didn’t see her there, I knew I had to start looking for her.Right there, I was tempted to leave on my own. For all I care, she could find her way home, but no, my mother would not tolerate such.As I went in search of her, I shook my head slightly as I remembered how I always rethought my decision whenev
Throughout our journey to the airport, Daniel and I sat side by side in silence. The man looked like he didn’t mind the silence which really annoyed me. It wasn't like I cared either. In fact, I was enjoying every bit of the silence also but what was aggravating me more was the man beside me and everything he had said to me. Looking back at it again, it began to dawn on me that my family had other choices indeed. But then again, Emerald looked like she knew and she didn't mind being sold off to the family as long as she could be with that man. If that was the case, then my family could have postponed the wedding till whenever she woke up. They made it seem like they had no other choice. They acted as if the family and company would fall apart if I didn’t marry that man. I was a fool. I believed them. No, I made them succeed in using me. As if that was not enough, this woman would not stop taunting me. I wonder how he calls me his wife without having to cringe. I knew so well t
