Chapter 4

Author: A Pot of Gold
I took off the engagement ring and tossed it onto the pile of clothing.

"Nathan, I shouldn't have clung to you," I muttered. "I won't cross that line again."

Ever since I started falling for him, I stopped calling him my brother. Using "Nate" instead of "Nathan" made me feel like we were already something more.

I told myself that if I never said what we were, nothing would stand in our way. But it turned out he just never loved me like that.

When he overheard me, Nathan stopped on the stairs.

The blood on the carpet was hard to miss. His eyes widened at the sight of it, and he rushed over to me. As he kneeled on the floor, he pulled me into his arms. He looked just as frantic as he had that day at the funeral parlor. "Willow!" he gasped.

"Willow, you sure know how to play the long game." Lily sneered.

Her mockery seemed to snap Nathan out of it. He promptly let go and threw me to the floor.

Lily then picked up the ring and slid it onto her finger. After that, she grabbed a costume from the pile and said she wanted to try it on, just to see if Nathan thought it looked good.

I closed my eyes as a sharp, stinging pain spread all over my body.

Nathan used to know I was terrified of pain. Whenever I was sick, he would never leave my side.

There was even once when I had a fever at school while he was away on a work trip. In the infirmary, I had bitten someone's hand and cried my eyes out. When Nathan heard of this, he drove three hours through the night to get to me.

"Willow, I'm here," he'd said.

Back then, I knew he would come for me, and he knew I would wait too.

Now, blood was dripping onto my lashes and slipping off.

The air felt frozen too.

Suddenly, a piece of candy landed on me. It was my favorite handmade kind.

In the past, Nathan used to buy them just to cheer me up. I never imagined he would still carry a few pieces in his pocket now.

My fingers tightened around the candy. For some reason, my eyes began to sting with tears too.

At that moment, Lily spat on the ground. The candy she had in her mouth—wet with spit—fell on my face.

"That's disgustingly sweet. Candy from the street stalls just doesn't taste like it did when we were kids," Lily said. "If it hadn't come straight from Nate's mouth, there's no way I would've eaten such things."

One of the purest memories I had was now part of their intimacy. I felt sick to my stomach.

I looked at Nathan, and his gaze started to dart around. "Go to the prayer room and repent. I'll go get you some painkillers," he said without looking me in the eye. "As long as you learn your lesson, I'll let this go."

My head suddenly cleared, and I finally realized that he had always been like this. Every time I hit rock bottom, he would carelessly show me a bit of sweetness. It was an endless cycle.

The past played clearly in my mind, but I watched the story that used to be mine like a passerby. I felt nothing at all.

When I was back in my bedroom, I took our photo off the wall. I tossed it into the box along with the prayer journal where I had written the same prayer for him a thousand times.

Before I could finish packing, the prayer journal was soaked through with a cup of water.

Just then, I looked up and saw Lily standing there, holding the painkillers with a mocking smile.

Just then, a car suddenly swerved out from the side and sped right toward me.Nathan grabbed me, and we rolled across the ground a few times before coming to a stop.Nathan didn't even flinch at the pain from being hit. His eyes were filled with nothing but worry when he looked at me.However, the blow had hit the old wound on my head, and I blacked out on the spot.…When I opened my eyes again, Luke was sitting by the bed. He anxiously looked at the doctor, then back at me."Mrs. Patton hit her head. Whether her memories will return or not depends on further evaluation," the doctor said.My throat was dry when I asked Luke, "You're my husband?"Luke frowned and said, "You better not forget this time. We're having a baby!"When he saw me covering my mouth and laughing, only then did he realize I was just teasing him."So, do you remember anything from before?" he asked.Just then, Nathan pushed open the door.I lightly shook my head. Then, I glanced past Nathan like he was

"I love you, but I kept lying to myself. I told myself I was only marrying you to repay a debt," Nathan said. "It was the only way I could avoid the promise I made to Jessica."As he spoke, he pulled out his phone. On the screen was a photo of me sleeping."I wasn't on the phone with anyone that night," he explained. "I just did something I shouldn't have while looking at your photo."Then, he pulled out the rosary I had thrown away and placed it in my hand. "It's okay. Even if you've forgotten, I can tell you everything," he said. "This is the matching rosary to mine. I had them made when I decided to marry you.""I prayed for us to have an eternity together."I was shocked by everything he had planned. So, he did have feelings for me when I still loved him.But all of it just made me feel sick now."You loved me, but you let everyone accuse me of being shameless and throwing myself at you?" I scoffed. "You loved me, but you left me standing there like a fool at the wedding w

Nathan pointed the gun at his own chest. "Willow, you just lost your memory, so I don't blame you," he said. "But you still know I'm your beloved Nate, don't you?"If you won't come back with me, I'll die right here!" He was sure I remembered bits of the past, but what he didn't know was that the memories made me see things more clearly.Ever since I woke up with amnesia, he hadn't shown me a single act of kindness. So, even with the fragmented memories of the past, I no longer felt any love for him."Nathan, do you know what I regret most?" I asked. He seemed to know what I was about to say and shook his head hard. "Willow, I won't believe anything cruel you say right now." It was as if he wanted to stop me from continuing, but at the same time, he was also trying to convince himself not to listen to my goodbye.I chuckled softly, my expression as calm as ever. "My biggest regret in life is letting my mom save you."Nathan broke down in an instant. Then, with a loud bang, th

"I now pronounce Mr. Patton and Ms. Turner husband and wife!" On stage, the officiant completed the ceremony. Luke pulled me into his arms and kissed me.I stood there as I accepted blessings from the guests. Everyone said I was the wife Luke had gone to great lengths to win over.Just then, the doors to the wedding hall suddenly flew open. Nathan stormed in, eyes bloodshot. "I object!"It had only been a week, but his stubble had grown out. I had never seen him so haggard. "Willow, I knew it. The Lord must have heard my prayers. I've come to save you!" he shouted.I frowned and stepped behind Luke without a second thought.A flicker of pain flashed in Nathan's eyes. He asked, "Are you afraid of me?" Then, he smiled bitterly as he explained, "Willow, I know you ruined our wedding because of your memory loss. You're only marrying Luke because you've been tricked."What happened before was my fault. I shouldn't have treated you that way. You can't marry Luke. He's only doing it t

As soon as I looked up, Luke kissed me on the lips and smiled in satisfaction. "I'll never let you down," he said. After that, Luke brought me back to the home he had already prepared for our wedding. When the door opened, his rumored girlfriend was standing there."What are you doing here, Lorelei? The wedding's tomorrow, so don't ruin my big day today," Luke grumbled."I'm here to meet the woman my little brother's been obsessed with for ten years," Lorelei said with a teasing smile. Before she could say more, Luke shoved her out the door.Lorelei didn't want to reveal her family background, and that was how the scandal about Luke fooling around with an actress had started. However, to protect his sister, he chose not to make any public statements. As I listened to Luke's rushed explanation, I gave a small nod.His eyes then darkened with desire as he pulled me close. After that, we tangled through the night until morning.…"Mr. Cooper, Jessica's ashes were moved to Hass

"I went to the Cooper residence to look for you, but they wouldn't let me in. Do you know how scared I was?" Luke said. "What if something happened to you? Was I just supposed to live like a widower?"He looked just as tense now as he did the first time I saw him. The day I woke up in the hospital, he was soaked as he sat beside my bed. I heard that he didn't wait for the rescue team, so he dove in and saved my life himself. That day, Luke didn't relax until the doctor said, "Your girlfriend's fine. She just lost her memory.""You're my boyfriend?" I had asked. When Luke heard that, he stood there with his mouth agape for a long time. Soon, he stammered, "Yes, I do quite like you. But your mean brother keeps getting in my way."Upon thinking back to our conversation that day, I suddenly realized that Luke wasn't as awful as Nathan said he was."I'm sorry. I only went back to get my mom's things, but something unexpected happened," I said. "After we get married for the alliance,
